Yup. Higher resolution = more work for the graphics card. If your graphics card is weak, it may not be able to handle games at higher resolutions.
Yes.
are you running on the onboard 9400M or the 9600M?? you can change you know..
Really? How is this done? OR, how can you tell which you're running on? Reason I ask is I'm playing COD 4, and I think I have it set for 1400-something res, and have no issues. MBP with the 9400 and 9600.
not sure how you change it, i dont have one. has something to do with loggin out.
no...
he said that even on really low settings, it still lags anyway.
I have the baseline MBP and play games at 2048x1152 on my monitor!
STALKER and TDU being the most graphic intensive, but it can still run them okay!
Somethings up here...
EDIT: go see my thread, you should be able to handle cod4 https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/642965/
if your still having issues, ill whack it on my laptop and see how it goes

is 9600M 512mb that weak?
Ermm, 2048x1152...Did you run COD4 at 2048x1152 on your monitor? COD4 is much more graphically intensive than the games you benchmarked except for L4D, but you failed to mention what resolution it was ran at.
it does not struggle at 1440x900!Yes, the 9600M GT is a relatively weak card compared to the high end cards these days. It would struggle to run games at resolutions about 1440x900. However if you turn the settings down it should compensate for that, unless you forgot to turn off Anti-Aliasing. Also, the Windows version of COD4 runs much more smoothly than the Mac version of COD4.![]()
To switch between GPUs...
Open System Preferences
Click Energy Saver
Select Better battery life (9400) or Higher performance (9600)
Prepare to log out/log back in.
Would be SO NICE if someone would write a Dashboard Widget to do this quickly!
ok. now i know whats the problem.
its the ext. 24" monitor.
it lags whatever the resolution it is (lag delay with lower resolution, but it eventually still lags)
when i use the mbp lcd, i can play cod4 smoothy with the highest performace.
but i really dunno why the ext. lcd cant play cod.
its 1yo acer p243w lcd. it says it has 3ms in spec.
are you connecting via VGA or DVI?
do you run in "extended desktop" or "mirrored desktop" mode??
extended
dvi
ok, RAM is split when in extended.. try mirrored and see what results you get.
but i cant get 1920x1080 in mirror..
its so ugly to hv 1440x900 in a 24" mon
yes but you said it lags even on low resolutions.. if the game plays well even on 1440x900 then we know its either:
a) a driver problem
b) the GPU is being driven to hard because there isnt enough RAM/GPU time being given to it.
what can i do?
it seems that there is no driver update at this moment.
i hv 4gb ram already..
test running in mirrored so that the problem can be decided on more accurately.
it runs smoothly in mirrored..
what does it indicate?
