Hmmm, I have 3 laptops my Dell and HP run so hot they burn my legs when I truly have them in my lap, My Mac has never done this.

Well those were crappy laptops too. :D

I have an X61s. It idles in the low-to-mid 40s. With no fan. It's literally completely silent (SSD, so no drive noise.)

Here is my temps. I am running Firefox, iTunes, Adium, Preview, and Address Book.

On my Alu 2.4 MB the CPU is at 40 - 45 doing light work with WiFi on, Plugged into Magport and basically doing some word processing/Safari browsing for revision for exams

Much better than my previous BlackBook, used to get 60 degrees doing nothing!

However the only downside to this is my HD is kinda loud, not very loud, audible in a quiet room and sometimes clicks every 10mins. Might have to replace it but dont want to send in my MacBook as they really screwed up my Black one, scratched it up, hinges came back loose and keyboard corners were rough and dented. They replaced it all but it took them a lot of time and I needed a Laptop so I really cant afford to go through with that all again.

Any ideas?

Mine was around 80C when encoding a movie in iMovie. I think that was around 75% load? maybe? I had a laptop cooler, but didn't help too much.

The only reason PC's run cooler is because they have larger heatsinks and exhaust vents. Hence why most PC's are thicker and uglier than Apple's... Apple's design is all about compact, clean, and well hidden.

Right now, at 80% idle, I'm reading 52C without laptop cooler on a pretty nice 75 F day.

Phrased differently, the reason that some (not all) PCs maintain more conventional temperatures is because they don't prioritize aesthetics over reliable, sustainable operation.

for some reason I think mine has been getting hotter over time. from day 1 i have had safari, mail, itunes, word, ical, a couple of pdf files open pretty much all day every day. used to never go above 55C or so, now it goes up to the 80s sometimes :(
