Yeah, once you get past the childish anti-Apple noise (they make toys, not tools, it's for status seekers and fashionistas, not people that want do real thinks, etc) you'll find Apple product's desirablility is due to nothing less than good design and ease of use (what many anti-Apple call "dumbed down" because it dispenses w/ over-complexity).
.

Most (maybe more than 90%) of these so called "Apple Fanbois" are actually ex-windows users (me included) and they have tried/owned both platforms. Gone are the original Apple/Mac diehards that would "never" touch a non-Apple/Mac product.

Every now and then I also get this sarcastic remark from people about how I'm so enamored w/ Apple and I simply asked them if they have ever owned one and most of the time they haven't. So I simply tell them to get one and come back and argue with me about Apple's kool aid.

So to the OP, go for it and get you iPad 2 and next year I will see you at the Macbook Air or iMac forums :D

I agree, I have lots of friends who are die hard windows users, I tell them I prefer a high quality machine and the Mac happens to fit the bill.

Congrats on your iPad. Next time I would phrase the thread something like: "Came to the realization today that I want an iPad."

The way your title reads would imply you realized you are gay and want an iPad...

Why should I spend an extra $100 when 16gb is sufficient? That's just silly and a waste of money.

I keep no music on my iPad, and I only load movies if I actually intend on watching them somewhere (like on an airplane). I have dozens and dozens of apps which I regularly use - games, productivity, remote desktop, etc. I still have quite a bit of space on my iPad leftover.

Sorry, but your logic isn't logical at all.
Well, nobody mentioned that they were going to get an iPad not to use it as it was intended. Sure, if you are going to get one and ration everything that you put on it or put nothing on it, then 8gb would be enough.

My point is pretty simple...if you are going to USE the iPad the way it is intended to be used, 16gb is not enough and that is pretty much universal. If you are talking about not spending a dime more than you have to, then you can get a netbook for $200 that will allow you to surf the web expeditiously.

Let's look at this again, but using smaller words. Remember, what I do isn't the intended use, right?
I watch movies.
I read email.
I surf the web.
I play games.
I use Maps.
I pay my bills.
I confirm my flight itenerary and check in.
I look at star charts.
I plan and check off my packing lists.
I took notes in college.
I read books.
I text, instant, message, and use IRC.
I remote in to my desktop.
I use my iPad as a wireless second monitor for my desktop.

I have two iPods and an iPhone. Why on earth would I need to keep music on my iPad? Why on earth would I need to keep movies on my iPad, except for when I travel or actually intend on watching them?

Your logic isn't logical at all. 16gb is perfectly fine.

What app do you use for packing lists?

You know...this is interesting to me because I just can't see how the 16gb is a smart buy for anyone.

First of all, if you can't spend $599, you probably have no business spending $499, so price shouldn't be that much of an issue.

I can spend $599, but I choose to spend $499 and use the $100 savings on something I feel is more important than an additional 16GB of memory I'll rarely use. Sure, I could store more stuff....but if it sits there static and is not being utilized...it's just being stored and not serving a purpose.

Secondly, if you have any desire to load the iPad up with apps (and I suspect that is the one of the main reasons people buy an iPad) then it makes no sense not to pony up for the 32gb.

It makes perfect sense. I have a ton of apps and none of them push anywhere near the 16GB mark. What takes up space are movies and music. Since I keep my music on my iPhone, which is always with me, no need to load much if any music. I only watch movies when I travel and 16GB is more than enough to load several movies for my flight to and from Asia coming up in a couple of weeks.

I would go as far to say that a, minimum, 32gb unit is "for everyone" except someone who is looking to exclusively search the web with minimal apps, photos or music aboard. In my opinion, it's pretty difficult to justify a 16gb iPad purchase unless you are getting a substantial discount via Craigslist or something in the like.

Well then you would be wrong.

I just got a $500 bonus at work! I sure would like to buy an iPad, but I can't afford it, because cardinalryan said I have no business buying a 16GB. :(

Good post.
We have a 16gb iPad1 in the family- and with all my work stuff on it I believe it has about 5GB used.
I keep nothing on it but apps/email. For travel, yeah put a couple of movies, pod casts, iTunes U etc.

Again, good post- completely agree.

You are limiting yourself with only 16gb, period. Why put yourself in a position to ration what you put on the device? Personally, I don't think it's worth the trouble. Further, you are utilizing about half of the iPad's capabilities, which is cool if you are good with that.

However, if someone is planning to use the iPad in all the ways it can be used then 16gb simply isn't enough. Everyone who claims 16gb's is enough is cutting corners in one way or another which takes away from the convenience factor which is one of the iPad's charms to begin with.

Because that's all I need. PERIOD.

Why put yourself in a position to ration what you put on the device?

Why spend an extra $100 on storage you don't need? That $100 buys some nice accessories.

Personally, I don't think it's worth the trouble.

What trouble?

Further, you are utilizing about half of the iPad's capabilities, which is cool if you are good with that.

Name a capability I am missing out on? Or even Alaerian...based on the list above I don't see anything.

However, if someone is planning to use the iPad in all the ways it can be used then 16gb simply isn't enough.

Prove that. You can't because it's 100% false.

Everyone who claims 16gb's is enough is cutting corners in one way or another which takes away from the convenience factor which is one of the iPad's charms to begin with.

Once again, prove it or accept that you are wrong.

By your own arguments you should have purchased a 64GB 3G version. Did you? Edit: Nope...he didn't. Why not? Why limit yourself? 32GB is useless and you're only getting 1/2 of the experience the iPad has to offer! :p

Edit: FYI, I'm currently preparing to travel to Asia for several weeks. I have loaded 5 movies so far and still have space for more. (One of them is Avatar which is at least 2-3x larger than the rest of the movies.) I also have some books and tons of apps. Not sure exactly what I'll be missing out on, but perhaps you can fill me in.

What capabilities am I missing out on that I specifically NEED extra space for?

Face it - you're wrong. I can spend my money as I see fit. If I'm happy with my iPad, how the hell does it affect you?

I think the whole point is that just because the ipad can be used in a certain way doesn't mean the person in question must. For example, I don't listen to music. If I had an ipad, am I supposed to fill it up with tons of downloaded mp3s I will never hear? Or am I meant to blast myself with music I don't care to listen to, just because the ipad was "intended" to be used that way?

I also have friends who use it for work-related purposes, and have used up less than 1/2 of the 16gb allotment (meaning that in hindsight, the 8gb version would have sufficed).

The fact is that the ipad is pretty much a blank slate. People choose what they want out of it, then get the apps they need for the ipad to fulfill those purposes. There is nothing you "must" do with an ipad. My colleague bought the basic 8gb version for her aged mother to surf the internet with at home (that's pretty much all she does with it, and she's perfectly happy with it).

Bottom line, it is his money, his ipad, just let him do what he wants with it. Maybe you are simply trying to be helpful and stop him from making a purchasing mistake he may regret later , but I think your tone is really making you sound all bossy and arrogant, and that is a real turnoff.

It's just a typical night of happy for most.
$100? These cost more- A tank of gas, shirt, Sunglasses, not even close.

You my friend do not live in the reality of the Middle Class (or even Upper Middle Class)

Tank of gas = $45
Shirt = $40-$60 on average
Sunglasses = $40-$60 on average

These are the prices I spend on these items. I do not buy Gucci yet my shirts are nice, my car is a sports car but does not have a huge engine, and I lose sunglesses way too often to spend $100 on them. And I'm not poor, for a single guy I live FAR above the poverty level.

And by your own argument, not unnecessarily spending an extra $100 on the iPad buys you one more "night of happy". (Sad for you that your happiness is defined by a night...)
