Try to find a scanner ( print/scan/copy or pure scan) device with a 640 or 320 sensor in it these days.

Back in the previous 2004 days when cellphones has these high fractional megapixel cameras people bought real compact cameras to take pictures with. 2000-2004 A Nikon CoolPic compact camera was in the 2-3 megapixel range.


Why? because the images the phone camera produced were so relatively 'bad'. ( the relatively hyper low resolution screens on early 2000 era phones made them look passable. On a modern screen, that isn't going to happen. ) At relatively close range (some very low multiple of arms length away) can read decent text with this and get basic shapes and colors.
 
This is going to kill their AirPod dominance. Employers will start banning them from offices + facilities and people are going to feel uncomfortable with others wearing them. Once the general public starts to move away from AirPods, they won't come back.

Will be interesting to see whether they work properly in night/low light environments. Not sure how much price hike the next AirPods Pro will have due to the addition of the camera(s).

Not for me. If this gets popular there will probably be lots of shooting without consent. I don’t really care about my face being photographed with laughable 1 mp camera, but I do care about my face being scanned by IR/LiDAR sensors
 
What you gain and what you give up for it is not well balanced. It's a dystopian tool for establishing Foucaults panopticon and some are voluntarily giving up their freedom for a membership in the perfect prison.

But I'm sure those will be banned immediately in the EU for good reason.
BOOK THIS:

They will NOT be saving ANY images. What is 'sees' will be prompted and fed through Siri to context and information.
Apple will probably implement it as capturing images that are directly fed into their Visual Intelligence AI on-device to identify things, then the original images are destroyed and not saved, and the only thing that is retained and available to the user is text and text descriptions of things in the image.

In the EU though, with EU having designated Apple as a platform gatekeeper and where third-party companies can request access to the same hardware features that Apple has access to, it'll be interesting to see which companies request access to the raw AirPods camera image output and what they decide to do with it...

10 versus 100,000. is 4 orders of magnitude off target. That is a bit past being slightly off target; it is the factually incorrect zone.

Wi-Fi only headphones would be heavier and cost more. Those are a couple of the attributes that AVP labored under. It is a major factor as where Wi-Fi headphones don't dominate the wireless headphone market.

Apple has also trying to stuff things into the Bluetooth standard that didn't stick.

Apple has a 0.4 still and a 0.1 megapixel camera sensor here. They are purposely shrinking the data so it fits on bluetooth and avoids Wi-Fi ... Yes Bluetooth LE does use less power than Wi-FI. That why it is winning in the wireless headphone market.

Secondly, the basics of a camera is to convert photons to electrons. The photovoltaic effect... And no that does not consume power . In fact, on solar panels is it how power is produced ; not consumed. Now if want to data process the data produced then yes that 'costs' some energy to do the computations. To convert digital data into audio cost computational energy also. If the bit rate levels between audio and 'pictures' is about the same then computational energy difference probably isn't all that hugely different.

Furthermore, a camera in this setup is very likely turned off 90-98% of the time. A module that is powered off versus a module that is powered on (to maintain the constant connection to phone/ipad/mac) ..... yes the latter is going to consume more power.

Look, I understand that different people have different needs, but being able to do something doesn’t mean it’s a logical next step to do it.

Actually using Logic and logical requires working with facts. You are 4 orders of magnitude off. Basic camera core sensors consume energy versus convert it. Standards compliant Wi-Fi radio systems do consume more energy than Bluetooth LE.

If Apple was actually building that you might have a point. They are not so you really don't.

Siri ( i.e., 'AI' ) have been a feature of AirPods since they were first introduced. The product has not existed without an "AI' connection the entire time. If Siri gets a vision perception capability, then adding it is basically following along with initial plan to couple to Siri.

They are not trying to add a keep persistent pictures/video feature. The image don't even need to leave RAM to get basics done (besides flowing between devices. AirPod RAM -> iPhone RAM (and maybe Apple PPC RAM).

When I walk into most larger stores the doors just open and close behind me. Oooo evil camera sensor.

In a recently build large supermarket I walked up to one of the refrigerator/freezer units and the inside was dark until I stood in front of the glass door for a moment. Would it make more sense to keep the freezer/refrigerator light on all the time? Or turn it off when no one is looking? (lights, even LEDs ones produce heat. So light on in a freezer isn't helping keep it coolest.) Again ooo the 'evil' camera sensor.

Siri can performance behaviors that are bit more complicated than open/close a door or turn a light on/off.

If these photos can end up in another app ( into Photos , "perv app 27" or some random cloud storage disk ) then Apple probably is failing here. However, there is zero reason why this can't be treated similar to TouchID , FaceID info and handled securely and not available for random app or general 'root' access. The actual image data isn't what the sensor is actually about. It is about capture metadata from the image. ( name of book , address , identify an object (what kind of bug, flower, tree is that) , etc. )

FYI each image is divided into smaller slices for transmission, so they don't need to "shrink" the data. The image payloads are transported through an L2CAP data pipe. According to the code, compression must be enabled for passive capture.

if using a 0.4 megapixel camera instead of a 2, 4, 10 megapixel one then it is already shrunk at capture. Sure they could further shrink it with compression, but purposely captureing less data in the first place is very probably much cheaper in materials and processing energy costs. Capturing excess data than is necessary to make the inference is wasteful.


The LLM inference on the other end has to ingest (and convert since 'image' isn't 'language' ) so if send chunks about as fast as the ingest then the inference doesn't take any longer. But if the chunck and transfer process gets substantially longer than the 'ingest and produce answer" process then 'chunking' is not a panacea.

The significant feature that is reportedly different here is that it doesn't record. It just perceives. Active noise cancellation captures conversations to remove them. Nothing is recorded in that process.

Pretty extremely unlikely there is a "hey siri how big is that penis to the right' command available here.

Yeah, the ability to snoop on others or catch people in compromising or exposing situations and record that moment is too risky with something like this. It's going to ruin people's trust of AirPods and hurt the overall brand.

On top of that, the battery life on these would be awful?
From what we are hearing, there is no “record that moment” function. The cameras for for the AI situation awareness that can tell you about what is happening around you. I’m not saying I think that is a valuable feature and there are a lot of questions, but this is not a “perv cam” to record compromising situations.
 
I've been taking some videos in my gym lately for the online coaching group I'm in and I'm intensely sensitive about it and only do it in ways/angles that make it obvious I'm only capturing myself and the area I'm in.

Cameras on Airpods would be a disaster.

The camera subsystem on the AirPods can't really control whether a picture is recorded or not. The images are being copied back to the iPhone,iPad, and/or Mac. It is underlying operating system that needs to protect the copy that it gets.

The code declaration fragments outlined by mactracker do mention a 'Exclave'. A macOS exclave is a secure area where not even 'root access' or rogue kernel extensions can get to the data. It is a segregated area where need special permissions to get only selected data in/out.

If this system is set up security with obscurity and any random user app can call this framework and request access to the image captured then the notion that this didn't record is basically lie. If the system hands over images to any Joe Blow that passes by, then all the rogue operator has to do is stuff the image data into a file and there will be a recording. Very similar is images are mapped/stored in a shared memory space and while no 'official' call to copy it is stilling in unprotected space then it can be yanked.

If Apple Visual Intelliegence is the only subsystem that can consume the images (and it self doesn't make temp copies or page unencrypted memory blocks to disk ) then can claim there is no recording.

In short, the operating system has to be actively protecting the data to keep it from being copied by unauthorized subsystems. Otherwise, it is basically a farce. Apple claims 'purity' as it is shipped and just waiting for perv mods to show up.

so that can hook random non-Apple equipment to the AirPod and start requesting snapshots ... the notion of 'no recording' flies out the window also. the AirPods could pair to a non-Apple system for basic audio interchange , but the camera shouldn't talk to that system at all.

finally, Apple Visual Intelligence and 'punt' on doing the inference because it is 'too hard' and ship the image out to a 3rd party with widely varying privacy policies (e.g. put to Claude, GPT , Grok. etc. )

By the same hyper generalization 3rd party apps should be required to givce access to the Secure Enclave data, FaceID raw data , and TouchID raw data. The EU also has laws on privacy and the gatekeeper stuff doesn't completely supercede those.

Basically same issue here. The camera data is being stuff in a Exclave. It is distinct from the general macOS kernel area and is secured to highly restricted access. Technically macOS isn't running there. So if scope goes to macOS then it is outside the scope. Just like the even more isolated Secure Enclave.

If 3dr parties want to use another camera to capture the images and hand that image to Apple Visual INtelligence it will cough up the same metadata. The results are not being 'gatekept' .

If 3rd parties want to build their own headphones is substantially weaker privacy protectdions Apple isn't stopping them from being added to the platform. For example, folks can pair of Facebook Meta Glasses to a Macbook or iPhone. The images get shipped into Meta never-neverland and Apple doesn't stop them at all. Aren't charging them anything either (that is pretty clear on macOS... don't have to use appstore there) . ( which is major issue of that the gatekeeping thing is after . )

Similarly the AirPods can connect to a non-Apple system and the standards based audio part works but the camera simply refuses to talk to anything else that can't absolutely guarantee to meet Apple privacy policies. That isn't 'gatekeeping' that is a privacy issue.

I see a huge market for these new AirPods. IF....

I believe there is going to be a company or developer who creates a safety / security App linked to these cameras in the AirPods and the enhanced Siri on the iPhones.

Siri will be able to say to the camera-enabled AirPod wearer:
"Churchman..." "Yes Siri?" "AirPods Personal Security Alert has detected the same person has been following you 10 feet back for the last 3 city blocks. There is a secure banking location 8 feet ahead of you on your immediately left. Please enter that location as soon as possible. I have sent a image of the person to your iPhone. If this is an emergency, please alert bank security and local police and show them the photo."

If there is a truly robust safety / security App tied to the camera-enabled AirPods and AI-enabled iPhones... and their ability to use cameras, lidar, real time mapping, and AI to do measured personal threat assessments, I see many, many buyers for this:
- executives and companies wishing to buy these to protect C-Suite leadership
- women
- parents buying these for their children to enhance child security when out in public
- people buying these as an extra layer of monitoring for elderly relatives
- travelers buying these for security against muggings / pickpockets
- police departments and law enforcement
- public figures of all types

This will sell nicely with the right safety / security Apps
Yes they will definitely be useful in perpetuating paranoia and distrust of others that governments have been using to create divisions in societies. Right out of the Chinese communist party’s playbook.

In some —maybe all EU member countries— it is not necessary to wait fir EU ctiin. Just recently, a city in Germany banned smart glasses in certain places.
