All in all, when it comes to camera performance, unless you're someone who takes a lot of Portrait Mode photos or often uses the optical zoom feature on the iPhone, you may not notice much of a difference if you choose the iPhone XR over the iPhone XS.

NEWS FLASH:

Analysts have determined after much debate and investigation, that the camera in a more expensive device, may be better than that in a cheaper device.

I know this is a joke, but it's important to state that this actually does not enable XR camera functionality. Currently iOS requires* the XS to use the telephoto lens during portrait modes or >= 2x zoom. So if you prefer only using the wide angle lens for these shots, you HAVE to get an XR.

*This may change with future iOS updates, but I wouldn't count on it

Really.....?

No, it’s not important to state the obvious.

I bet a third party camera app will/have this option now/soon.

Some slight differences, but relatively similar photos from both. This is what I expected considering they both have the same cameras (aside from telephoto). The camera wouldn't be a huge differentiating factor for me if deciding between the two.

Review might need to clean their glasses.
There is clearly a huge difference between these two photos in favor of the Xs. Geez.

Has anyone seen the bezel on the XR? It’s horrendous and huge after using the X/XS.

I saw it yesterday and that's a little exaggerated. The bezel is slightly larger, but not horrendous nor huge. This coming from a current owner of an X. And the phone in no way feels like a budget phone.

As for the photo comparisons, the differences are so minuscule that I'm fine going with the less expensive alternative.

Did my own comparison at the apple store between the XS and XR and I immediately noticed the difference, the XR is just not as sharp as the XS or even the X. The whole device just feels very off , the display doesnt go edge to edge or close like the XS/X that also just threw me off , if it was priced at $599 no biggie, but at $749 .... NOPE

$749 was too expensive so instead, you bought a $1000 phone?

Could you help me out? I can't tell the difference. Ofcourse that could be because I'm at work and my computer screen is 4 years old.

Sorry - AutoCad on an iPad? Maybe for some preliminary work. But this is not a workstation with a filesystem, with many iterations etc. Just get the Mac Pro done please!!!

I think it's a misnomer people keep saying 2x optical zoom. Technically it's not 2x optical zoom. It's more like switch to the other camera.

Back in day I had a Nokia N93 (well I still have it), it had a real optical zoom. It was a 3x optical zoom that you could physically zoom and you could see the camera optics move in and out.

No, it’s not important to state the obvious.

This is not at all obvious. I know it's fun and witty to try to post zingers, but when phone 1 has camera's A and B, phone 2 has only camera A, it's very easy (almost obvious) to assume phone phone 1 is at WORST equal in all ways to phone 2, because you can always just use camera A. But because of the advanced software techniques being used in phone 1 and the trade-offs involved in integrating both cameras, this can result in an inferior result than phone 2 with camera A alone.

I was merely answering with incredulous light humour to you insulting the intellect of the MR community. You do know how ridiculous your post was? A little like the "Do not try this at home" announcement after watching Superman fly..

So it was not really as important as you think, to state that putting a bit of tape over a dual lens will not enable an otherwise unavailable technical functionality of the XR. Also like saying (and as you have qualified in another post) 'if you cover one of your two working eyes with your hand, you cannot expect an improvement of vision'.

That is what was almost "fun and witty", if you were not taking yourself so seriously...

So again..., Really....?

Nope I own an iPhone X and did not pay $999 :D . Trades a friend a Note 8 for it that was purchased for a deal that ended up costing me $650

So I went to the Apple Store. The difference in the camera was SHOCKING. I don't know what the reviewers were talking about. In the store, taking a picture of my wife with the XS vs the XR, the images were VERY VERY different. The XR was so clearly worse on almost every level!!!

So, my wife and I have decided that the XS is to expensive - so we are going to wait to black friday and see if anyone is trying to get some Pixel 2's out of stock and doing good sales. They greatly reduced the Big size pixel, but we don't want that size - wish they had lowered the smaller phones price too.

I also did check in store but didn't see any difference except of the zoom, in fact XR has bigger light sensors 30% that xs thus more light thus I thought pictures looked better. So, except for zoom (I can move a couple of meters if need for that zoom in 'most' situations)...but I really liked XR in hand, just feels better, not slippery and not too slick like xs, I don't like slippery devices...unless xs has other features that you care for compared to XR and you care for 3x zoom I don't see why should most people get xs..plus XR has nicer fun colors not those boring grey and black slick slippery glass covers..

I don’t get why people are trying to make out the Xr is better it is not. Say that the Xs isn’t worth the extra money that’s fine. Say that you aren’t bothered about the OLED display of higher resolution. Fine. Say that the Xr is better value for money. Fine. However it’s not a better phone.
[doublepost=1540884931][/doublepost]
The low light picture on the Xr didn’t blur out the background at all. So really it would have been the same as taking the shot on the Xs with the wide angle and not taking a portrait.
but most pictures that have blurred background look ugly just like someone took scissors cut the head and pasted it on some dirty multicolor paper...very few pictures look good with blurred background (way overrated technique btw)

pictures are the same pretty much, probably zoom fooled you and if you upload those pictures from both devices to some fancy iPad than you can see the difference, you cannot see clear difference by viewing them on those two phones

Can you explain this statement in more detail? How does the xr have bigger light sensors?

I was there. The difference was huge. My wife, who has only owned Apple products since the 90's bought a Pixel 3 on Black Friday for $399. On that same day I got the iPhone X for $499 also on black Friday. The pictures on my wife's phone are amazing! She absolutely hates not having iMessage though. We kept our last phone about 3 1/2 years so who knows what the situation will be in 3 years but my wife is loving her pixel.
