Its funny to see that last year's iphone X photos look like utter crap compared to this year's XS. And what was all the hoopla last year when the X debuted? Ooh! The camera is the best camera ever in an iPhone .. Ha!

What kind of argument is this? That was last year! Did you expect the photos taken with a new camera on a new device to look worse? I have some "breaking news" for you. The photos taken with the new iPhones of 2019 will look much better then these taken with 2018 iPhones. Shocking!!

Makes sense. So far pictures have been much better on my Xs Max. Looks like a significant upgrade if you’re into photography.

You came from a X or a previous model?
I take a lot of pics with my 8+ and I'm glad they didn't put a best camera on the bigger model as this time I'm going for the Xs.
The only downside is that the telephoto lens didn't get the new sensor, as far as I know is the same one as the one of iPhone X. Upgrading from an 8+ I'll only get the OIS on the telephoto lens, that's good but having the better sensor would have been great. I take most pics with the wide lens, but I sometimes use the 2x not for portrait but just for capturing a distant subject. I'll be able to get improved pics thanks to smart HDR but the new sensor is great in low light conditions so I'll better stick with 1x in those scenario.

Is it just me that thinks the faces in those shots look weird.
It's like they've been given an all over even tone, smoothed out, and just look weird.
[doublepost=1537952749][/doublepost]I've seen quite a few side by side images of the Max against the year old pixel 2 and the pixel still generally gives the better image, almost always with far more detail, I don't understand as that's a year old now and only 1 lens.

I'd almost expect the Pixel 3 coming out in a few weeks time to perhaps be a little better, but not the Pixel 2 to still be better than Apple's new camera

I'm still very pleased with my iPhone X which replaced my 7 which went to my wife. I take a lot of pictures and with a little post-processing, you can get the same results. Don't get that excited about the XS. This time next year you're going to wish you'd waited for the next model. That's how Apple works. You're only allowed to be thrilled with your new purchase for about 7-8 months until, with the promise and rumors of new features, Apple wants you to become dissatisfied with whatever you have. It's the only real downside to buying Apple products IF you allow them to bait you.

The X is dead. Long live the er .. XS is it? XR! XXS! It's the same thing only more expensive yeah? Resized? New name That's it Anyway whatever its called Its newer. And pricier. So let's enjoy it for those reasons alone, yeah? Yeah! Come on! Sorry. I don't think I typed in my credit card PIN correctly there. How much did you say? £1300 wasn't it? There you go! Good. Now then. Why is it £300 better again? No no. Don't worry about it. I'm in a hurry. I'll read about why when I get a minute. Thanks.

10 is pronounced "ti" in my language. So when you say iPhone 10S, you say "ti s" which sounds like "tis". "tis" means urine.

I think the XS photos looked over processed. Is Apple trying to give us a Samsung Galaxy type camera now? What are they doing? That’s one of the reasons why I dislike the Galaxy phones.

My guess is that next year's iPhone will, with high hopes, ditch the notch in favor of a better solution and the name scheme will restart with a total new era of innovation: iPhone. Keeping it much akin to how they did the iPad. Doubtful in reality though but I just feel like they've fragmented it with the generation offsetting the given number in it's name. Who knows though lol
I agree. The names of the iPhones this year are terrible. Why change the name from Plus to Max? Max is awful. I hope they at least go to simply iPhone 5.8 and iPhone 6.5 like the iPad Pro models.

Do the new dual camera modules still have the same white eyes flaw in low light videos?

Noise reduction is a double edge sword. There's no way going around physics. Camera sensor as small as the ones in phones will be noisy, especially at higher ISO. So to get good shot at low light, you would either preserve some details while retaining noise, or reduce noise while sacrificing details. It's old news, and the same tradeoffs in regular cameras as well. Until one can fit a full-frame sensor inside a phone, there's no magic or AI BS that can work around physics.

Both looks good to me X & XS - i believe it must be software tweak to get the better imaging, but I'm not giving up my DSLR with various lens :D

Well, when there is a distinct shape in frame, Depth Control kinda works. But when there is something of more complicated shape it sucks big way. Like look between branches in the first pics of the original gallery, this one of the plants on the pond bank. The other bank is still almost in focus...

Let's hope the Roman Numerals stop at X...

Do we really want an iPhone LXXXVIIIs Max (to the third power) or iPhone XLVIII? I mean those numbers are not used everyday for a reason.

lets hope you stop complaining one day. Do you really need to complaint on everything apple related. Just buy the phone and enjoy the experience

Of course smartphone Bokeh & DOF is gonna be different than dslrs. Limitations on sensor size etc. But this will only get better as software & computational photography tech improves. Especially when Apple puts a truth depth camera sesnor on the back cameras like on the front for face ID. Then you will get even more precise DOF control with face & object mapping. Baby steps, but it is amazing the kind of shots you can take with phones these days.

No offense, but your opinion is wrong.

HDR is software AND hardware driven. Standard HDR is very simple, take multiple photos at different exposures and combine them together into a single photo. Smart HDR, on the other hand, dynamically determines what the exposures need to be on the fly, in an attempt to create a "perfectly" exposed photo. This requires some extremely complex calculations that the A11 chip is just not able to supply.

Well, at the time it was the best camera. Shocking how hardware continues to get better. Next year, the new iPhone will have an even better camera.

No it wasn't the best camera, universally the opinion was that the pixel 2 and h20 pro were definitely better, plus the galaxy models were subjectively better..

I think Apple is giving customers what they want.
Most of the pictures take on an iPhone are shared via Instagram or other social networks. They have to look good on mobile devices, and that's what they're trying to do.

This guy from Mac Rumors doesn’t understand some of the fundamental technologies in the XS camera and thus his review is littered with discrepancies. It’s understandable considering this isn’t a photography site BUT I’d seek reviews of the new camera elsewhere

Not sure you can claim the Xs Max is "better", all LOT of those comparisons clearly show the older X is better. I have also seen a lot of comparisons recently against phones like Pixel 2 and other competitors, and the Xs photos always look washed out or like there is a fog in the scene when the competitor is crystal clear.

I think people are trying to justify their $1500 phone and the only real differentiation with it and older models is the camera, and trying hard to claim the photo quality is better. Camera and screen size aside, its hard to identify what is really different between the X and Xs generations.

But I think most of the issues with quality are software related and I think Apple will tweak this in coming updates, but personally from all the photo comparisons I have seen the Xs and Max are clearly not better then the competition, even Apple's own previous flagship. While it might do better in some situations, it is not $1500 better, not by a long shot.

As history shows, Apple stops at the number X (OS X).

Expect the next iPhone to be named iPhone X Cheetah.
