At seemingly random times when taking a photo that makes the camera glitch. More often happens when using the camera hardware button rather than the on screen button but can happen with either being pressed, no special settings just literally default camera settings and snap a picture.when this glitch happens, the screen goes blank, the buttons and screen are all unresponsive and a few seconds later the image reappears at phone Home Screen and camera app has quit, and no photo taken/recorded. Thereafter each time the camera app is loaded, whenever taking a photo is attempted the screen goes black and same thing happens. Occasionally when home screen reappears the phone is unresponsive for a few more seconds and then starts working again. I usually restart at that point or do a soft reset using the volume button / power button sequence because the phone often starts glitching even more as time goes on. After reset and restart then it works ok again for a few hours till the next time.

Thanks for sharing the details. Hopefully it's just a software issue and a fix will be released soon.

I've been reading MR for years and years and years but I set up an account to post this as it's annoying me SO much! :)

I upgraded from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to the iPhone 16 Pro and yep, I'm experiencing the same camera crashes that everyone else has been talking about earlier in this thread. Yes, if I restart then I'm ok to take a single photo, but really Apple? How on Earth did this EVER get past QA testing on the latest models of iPhone? Let me shock you folks. It very obviously wasn't tested, simple as that. I've been working with Apple products for almost thirty years now and these sloppy OS releases have been happing more and more over the past five years I've noticed. Rant over!

Well ranted. I second your rant. Only 24 years in my case but otherwise identical.

I didn't see this thread before making my post but wanted to confirm this is also happening to me on my iPhone 16 Pro. Support suggested I bring in my phone to the Apple Store despite it passing the diagnostic.

Regarding hardware or software issue.

I called apple support yesterday and they did a remote system diagnosis and the hardware is alright
So it's gotta be a software issue.

Hi all. New user UK based and have just registered with MR to comment on this thread.

I’m not as up to speed as you guys as I still have an iPhone 13 but since the iOS 18 update 7-10 days ago been having exactly the same issues as outline by everyone above so clearly it is directly related to the software update rather than the new hardware

Is there any sign of iOS 18.0.1 or such like to get this bug fixed?

Welcome! Wow, very interesting it is not limited to the 16. MR anticipates an 18.0.1 update this coming week, fingers crossed it addresses this issue 🤞

I have this issue as well. iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18 (the new updated version). When going into the camera app, a preview shows, and when pressing the onscreen button it crashes.

I tried to make a screen recording of this whole thing. Unfortunately, the screen recording also crashes when the camera app crashes.

Really disappointed that a device mainly marked for its photo features cannot take pictures.

Looks like it could well be a software issue - I’m running the current latest Beta of iOS18.1 (so fully appreciate there’ll be issues) but it is happening here too, and not seemingly limited to just the Camera app.

Have fed it back to Apple using the Assistant so will see if anything comes of it.

Apple support called this morning and thought that IOS 18.1 dev-beta5 / public-beta2 (same versions) had fixed the camera crashing issue and asked me to try it - downloading now. But to confirm, did you try those specific beta versions and is it still crashing for you?

Nice, let us know if 18.1 fixes it

Quick update:
A day after my call with apple support I did a forced restart (vol up, vol down, hold power button – Apples Nintendo code :D) and haven't had any problem with the camera since. Worth a try I guess, if you haven't already done it.

(No betas on the phone, just the latest official ios18 release.)

For some reason I’d failed to mention this is happening to me on my 15 Pro Max 🤦‍♂️. I apologise.

But the latest Dev beta is still causing me some issues with apps crashing, whether they be Apple’s or a third party.

Seems to be very random when it happens.

I am experiencing it too during video recording... it seems to be when i am selecting the different zooms or holding on the record button..

Has it been more than 24 hours? For me restarting the phone fixes it for the rest of the day, but the problem has consistently returned every morning. Restarting my phone every morning has been my workaround.

iPhone 16 Pro here on the 18.0 build 22A3354.

Had the crashing issues as everyone described. What’s worked for me (unfortunately) is completely disabling the Camera button and simply relying on the traditional methods to access the camera (Lock screen, Action button, launching the app). It’s been over 24 hours since my last restart and haven’t had issues since.

It's been fine and working as it should since Saturday Friday now, never had to restart again.
Hope it turns out the same way for you!

For info, a normal restart (via the menu or by shutting off and on again) does not do the same as a forced restart like I described.

Ugh, that's an awful compromise! I hope Apple, or your Phone, fix that soon!

Can confirm, this works! 🥳
Never mind. The main and wide angle were working fine today but as soon as I switched to 5x, camera crashed. Restarting the phone fixed it as usual. Back to hoping for an update asap 😅

Day 1 of using 18.1 public bets 2, and the camera appears to finally be working fine. Hurrah. Hopefully it stays fixed now. Fingers and toes are all crossed.
been using the dev versions since launch of this phone. never knew about this crash. i was taking photos all day on launch day as i was adding receipts to scan into google drive. even the little zoom button thats new was working normally.
