All fixed after the 18.0.1 update from last night (so far anyway). Even fixed my VPN messing my gaming up as well (booting me out of Clash Royale).

Take it back. Still happening. Crashes less often but always after camera launch. Going to 18.1 beta as last chance.

Let us know if 18.1 fixes it. I also thought 18.0.1 fixed it, but nope. It's better. Camera launches, and the only thing that triggers the crash now is taking a photo with 5x. Restarting the phone resolves the issue. I will continue to restart my brand new 16 Pro every morning..

Anyone of you already spoke to Apple support?
My new 16PM had a single random kernel panic Wednesday afternoon while idle. Only noticed because it asked for pin after restart.

Called support Thursday morning. Guy did run a 30sec diagnostic and said device has to be replaced.
Replacement unit arrived Friday morning not even 24 hours after the call.

I called. They ran hardware and software but couldn’t find anything. They were asking a lot about VPN though (Surfshark) and I think that might be part of it. It does impact other apps (games and radio).

I don’t use VPN and it still happens. So it’s still happening on 18.1?

Disaster! I posted an initial report here on discussion.apple.com. As of right now, 237 others are reporting similar.
Horrendous Apple iPhone Pro 16 camera hardware or software problem. I picked up the iPhone on Sunday, 21 September. Within two days, the camera app was crashing intermittently. And once it started crashing (push button on screen or frame, the screen goes black momentarily then dumps me back onto home screen) it will continue to crash until you do a reset on the phone. I got Apple support on the phone and, after trying to help me, the agent said 'here's a genius bar reservation' (for Monday, 30 September.)

At the genius bar, they said yup, we'll take in your new, defective 512gig mem iPhone Pro and give you a new phone (as I had originally ordered.)

It took me until last night (1 October, to pretty much have everything up and running on my NEW phone) then the d**n camera problem started crashing again!!! This suggests this is not a rare defect! There are currently 55 replies re this problem.
There are now
I've updated iOS (18.0.1) -- no help. Problem persists. No sign Apple is treating this as an urgent problem.

Wanted to leave it over a day before I could say if 18.1 has fixed it (to avoid the false dawn of 18.0.1). It 100% has. Phone running really good, battery life seems better? Quite impressed with the AI as well.

I've had these same issues and same attempted fixes. I'm hopeful that 18.1 will indeed fix it; it's a hassle to replace a phone, and if it's software I'd rather just wait til the fix is installed. Easy enough to temporarily not use the camera control button in the meantime.

I've put Halide and ProShot on the lock screen, though so far thirdparty camera apps seem to also be affected and also crash sometimes. Whether that's more or less than the system camera app, I don't know.

Thanks for pioneering that. After reading your message I upgraded to 18.1 public beta yesterday and it indeed seems to have solved the problem. Running very smoothly. Case closed, a pleasure working with you haha

Let’s hope a future beta doesn’t break it!

Latest beta hasn't broken it and just enjoyed taking pictures of the northern lights so loads of camera control action.

I had this issue. Seems to have something to do with coming out of sleep mode. Camera crashes, stuttering Bluetooth, battery shows 1% before going back to normal. I was also getting feedback that people couldn’t hear me on the phone as well. Restarting the iPhone temporarily fixes it. I reset all settings and it seems to have fixed the problem for now. Pain in the ass to add all of my cards etc but worth it to finally fix the problem.

I’m still having this problem too, on 18.01. It’s really very annoying
