Sales of Camera+
Yesteday, we reported on a boost in App Store downloads that some third-party developers had seen coinciding with the Christmas holiday. This annual boost in downloads and sales has been documented in previous years and has been attributed to the gifting of new iOS devices and iTunes gift cards for Christmas.

With the iTunes developer portal now back open, developers are finally seeing the sales numbers from Christmas weekend. TapTapTap has provided us with exclusive details of the sales of their Camera+ app [App Store], which re-launched just prior to the holiday and held the #6 ranking on Christmas Day.

140824-Photo2_500.jpg

Camera+ reached an impressive 78,995 downloads on Christmas Day alone, which represents $54,743 for the developer after Apple's 30% cut. While the sales graph seems to suggest that the sales have returned to pre-Christmas levels, the graph is somewhat misleading, as Camera+ had been ranked as high as #2 in Top Paid Apps before Christmas but today holds a rank of #13. Therefore, it seems that there has been a sustained boost in overall App Store sales since Christmas Day.

The download statistics showed improvement from last year's numbers, which revealed a similar data point of over 79,000 downloads on Christmas Day for the #3 ranked app, compared to Camera+ at #6 this year with a similar number of downloads. Historically, each rank position near the top of the charts represent a large difference in downloads Consequently, this year's #3 ranked app likely sold significantly more than 79,000 units.

Yeah, it really is a great camera app, the first to have independent focus/exposure control, and still the smoothest controls here compared to other apps with this feature. Also, it has an attractive GUI, is extremely quick at snapping photos, and has a large number of filters and other post-processing effects.

Here's hoping to see video recording capability added in a future update.

Congrats. It's not bad for those who wants more control. I still like the built in Camera app for quick snaps though.

It is that good an app? Or is this people trying to collectively give the finger to Apple?

Yeah, buying from Apple is a good way to give the finger to Apple.

I think Benjy is mistakenly thinking this is the new camera app that uses the volume button as a shutter. It is not. Camera+ actually got pulled for that a while back and just got rereleased after removing it.

It would be giving apple the finger (in a way) to buy the app that is highly advertising that nonallowed feature sure. But again you'd still be giving apple extra money, then apple would remove the app and you would never get any updates for it ever... that would be apple giving you the finger right back while saying "Thanks for the money!"

It's a good app. And congrats to the developers. But with all due respect (and I am not trying to start an argument or intentionally bitch for the sake of bitching). Why is this front-page news? Hear me out - its a post telling us how much a well known, well liked iPhone app made.

Surely this belongs on the section created specially for iPhone stuff...if its going to get posted on the home page then the iPhone section may as well be merged with Page 2 :/

You are wrong, pro camera was the first with white balance exposure control.

Also camera+ really dropped the ball with camera+, when not inclduing video in their app. Pro camera after the 3.0 update, is so much better. Shame the inferior apps get the most attention.

And ye its kind ridicolous how much macrumors are writing of tap tap and their apps

I think it also has to do with the developer letting us see the inside scoop on how the app has done and some of the tracking etc. That is my take on it.

It has to do with otherwise private sales data on the top app positions. It's the same relevance as total iPad sales or iPhone sales or Mac sales.

This is journalism at its trashiest

How further down this page can go is anyone's guess...

Also, I think it's about time for MR to rename itself to iOS Rumors - perhaps that way things wouldn't be as bad as they appear to be - perhaps...

Shock & Horror!

One of the apps I developed (that's been out for several months) showed a 10X spike in sales on 12/25, compared with its daily average for the prior month. But a couple of my apps actually had lower than average downloads. Overall, I'm happy.

How are your apps doing in the main App Store rankings? I'm actually more curious about how 'non-blockbuster' apps do in the store revenue-wise than the well-known super-success stories (i.e. if it's a worthwhile pursuit even if Apple doesn't find/promote you).

Less lost in L.A.
My first impression of Camera+ is ho-hum. I'm using an iPod touch, so of course am missing the focus control, but am I missing something else.

Oh, I thought this was the camera app that got pulled because of the volume button feature, and then allowed back on, and that people might be buying it to show Apple they really do want it.

Ask Apple
It's sad that we users have to hope little things like this will pass through the cracks. Years from now when the history is written of how Apple lost the war with Android, I think episodes like this will be seen as important reasons why Apple failed.

$54k just in one day? I would retire :D

That is why it is not your app. When I get big ticket days like that, I just buy another motorcycle and head to a whorehouse in Nevada. There I let the madam know I want to break in some of the new girls for a long weekend and then back work!

IMO, there is markets for both. This is not the land of PCs where purchase decisions made by inane office managers.

Apple has a strong following and the vast majority of their users want to stay in the garden letting letting Mother Hen Apple watch out for them. There are also those that want to run the wild side and recompile their Linux kernel on their patched FrankenDriod as they ride down The Five to LA at 80 MPH.

If anything, the worst is being lukewarm trying to cater to both crowds -- that's exactly what's RIM doing. Do a long term short sell on RIM stock and it will be a very nice 2012 for you IMO.
