First off, I'm not planning on camping out because I need to... but it would be a truly fun experience. I've got a few buddies that I'd be doing it with, and together we'd make the whole ordeal a fun time. That's why I'm not pre-ordering.

You guys have a job?

Why not wait until the iPhone 5 hits? That's sure to be much more of an "event" since demand for the phones is higher.

Hey ya'll,
so last year, when the iPad 2 was released, I went and 'camped out' to buy one... but I was a couple weeks past the release date. Next week I'm planning on buying the iPad(3? HD?) the day of it's release, so I need to camp out big time... the only problem is, I don't know how early I should go, what I should bring, things like this. If you've ever camped out at an Apple store before, share your experience/ideas/opinions here.
Thanks!

Even without a item like the new iPad going on sale, the Apple store near me is sometimes impossible to get in with all the people taking up all the counter space and playing with all the displays. Several times they have to stop more people from coming in until several people leave. I did not need an A5X chip to calculate the convenience of that pre-order button. Not only will I save who knows how many hours that day and frustration, but I'll save a few bucks of $3.75/gal gas. Ok...some people like the experience of standing in the line. Great! Strange... but glad for ya'.

I dont have a choice if i want one. I live in the netherlands, 25minutes away from the german border. Cant preorder one, so i'l need to visit a german store.
I think they are also doing first come first serve but im not sure.

I do wonder what the early people do when they need to take a leak^^

You plan to camp out for a new iPad even though you can pre-order one and get it delivered on the 16th by 10am? And hang out with your friends in a queue?

Really? Seriously...really?

My suggestion is to pre-order one, then wait until the 16th at 10am when yours arrives at your home, have a 12 pack in the frig or some chronic in the vaporizer and invite your friends over for beer or weed and ipad fun.

It is 2012 and waiting in line for a piece of consumer electronics is so 2007.

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Where the heck do you live where deliveries get to you by 10am? Where I am, FedEx and UPS get here from 4pm-5pm!

Do as you feel. Camping out should be fun.

You were born in the wrong country and wrong era! Eastern block during the cold war would have been an awesome fun time for you and your buds...

I consider it a complete waste of time. I pre-order mine, walk past all the sad individuals on launch day that spend hours and hours lining up and at a certain point be told they have run out (that is the most fun as you can line up again and again). And have my brand new Apple product be delivered to my desk during the day.

Turn up at 2:00am to make sure you get what yo want.

I'm going to the store so I can have mine guaranteed early and without having to wait at home all day for UPS/FedEx, since signature is required. Assuming of course they are available in the morning (5pm sales like last year, I'm screwed...) Also for the experience, it's fun to wait with a bunch of people interested in the same thing, and in a worst-case scenario, I can always just read a book while waiting.

Note, I'm not talking about camping out - just heading out there probably 3 hours early and picking up some Starbucks, and if the line is long enough getting in it then (I live right by the store so I can leave and come back).

I can see the appeal of lining up at a store with like-minded people for the iPad. I did it for the iPad2 at a Best Buy near my office. There was a Apple Store in the area, so everyone was there. I ended up leaving from work, standing in line for an hour and a half and getting my unit. It was okay. Got to talk to a few people about the iPad2, though it seems most of the conversation was trying to justify our upcoming purchase to each other.

This time I did a pre-order. No real desire to stand in line again, even if it is only for an hour and a half. But I can understand how people would want to make an event or memory of getting their iPad.

I think I will camp it out as well.... in my garden

and then wait for pre-order to arrive :)

1. I've rather wait all day at home with food in the frig, water, bathroom, TV, Etc nearby

2. Unknown what the weather will be like on the 16th. At home I do.

3. Guaranteed at the store ? Maybe, maybe not. No guarantees depending how far back you are inline, and how many the store actually got in.

;)

Plan to pitch a tent?

If camping out for a piece of electronics is fun, you got a really ****ed up idea of fun. Do something with your life.

I already pre-ordered and just got my shipping confirmation... so no need to campout or wait in line very early morning

The 2 Apple Retail Stores nearby my place are inside a Mall, so you can't camp out because of 24 hour Mall Security. The nearest Apple Store I could camp out at is the Apple Flagship Store in San Francisco!

but I might stop by the Apple Store later that Friday to Check Out the Lines

So many mean-spirited, judgmental people in this thread. I would say that the ones who sit on the internet criticizing and trying to ruin someone else's good time are the truly pathetic ones in need of lives.

My best suggestion for the OP is to call the store and ask if the line is getting big. Whenever they tell you it is, pack up and go. If you live in a small market, you won't have to wait as long. If you want to wait at the glass cube, from what I understand there are already some people there.
