A little off topic, but maybe someone can answer this
How come flash NAND is so much cheaper than the RAM dimms

$46 vs $1800 !?!?

Isn't it essentially the same thing
Ummm... no. Pretty much totally different.
For one thing, Flash memory is WAAAY slower than any SDRAM chips.
For another, the price of a DDR2 2 Gb SODIMM at $1800 vs 2 x 1 Gb DDR2 SODIMMs at $240 or thereabouts is all to do with the density of the chips and the packaging of the memory onto the module.

If you don't care about speed. If your system RAM was made of that stuff it would slow your whole computer down by a massive amount. DDR2 bandwidth can peak at over 8000MB/sec. USB2 max is 480Mb/sec.

Thanks for the quick replies

Not to get further off topic but is it different from the ground up, or is the silicon etching the same/similar just the boards and component chips/bandwidth channels different?
or is trying to compare these two like comparing apples to.. uh.. elephants.
Sorry for my extreme ignorance

It's the chips that are the specialised expensive bits. And they are totally different.

The boards themselves are totally different too, but that's less important...

I work for a compter store, and it does exist, a 2GB So-Dimm stick. My product manager offered me if I want to do a special order on it (them? 2x2GB :p).

I dont know what brand tho, I will ask him on monday.

Ask how much they are also!!

I thought word on the street was that Dell had an option for single 2GB chips in their XPS notebooks. I can't imagine Dell having such an expensive upgrade. I'm really looking forward to seeing someone get a 2GB chip.

If such an upgrade costs so much, how soon will prices drop to something reasonable (like around $300)?

How Much?

Exactly. I was just posting to another thread about the same thing.
It wouldn't make much sense to fork out $3500.00 for RAM and $2000.00 for an iMac.
It would be better to wait for an Intel Pro Tower to arrive. :p

$2775 for 4GB upgrade for Dell XPS M170

and

'it may delay ship date'...

Holy cannoli...thanks kumbaya for checking that out. That is one extreme upgrade.

Should I write this off as an option for upgrade?

I did wonder ('X-treme' gamers aside) for whom this upgrade might be a worthwhile investment...

I ran Sisoftware Sandra from a boot camp loaded copy of XP on my MBP. Here is some interesting information.

System Memory Controller
Location : Mainboard
Error Correction Capability : None
Number of Memory Slots : 2
Maximum Installable Memory : 4GB
BANK 0 - DIMM0 : Siemens 0x414554373630534430302D3330444139385A 0x32A33608 Unknown DIMM Synchronous DDR2-SDRAM 1GB/64 @ 667Mt/s
BANK 1 - DIMM1 : Nanya 0x4E5431475436345538484130424E2D334320 0xC9AB2E64 Unknown DIMM Synchronous DDR2-SDRAM 1GB/64 @ 667Mt/s

It also lists information about memory banks, and the number suggests that there is room for more memory

Logical/Chipset 1 Memory Banks
Bank 0 : 512MB DDR2-SDRAM 5.0-5-5-15 1CMD
Bank 1 : 512MB DDR2-SDRAM 5.0-5-5-15 1CMD
Bank 4 : 512MB DDR2-SDRAM 5.0-5-5-15 1CMD
Bank 5 : 512MB DDR2-SDRAM 5.0-5-5-15 1CMD
Channels : 2
Speed : 4x 166MHz (664MHz data rate)
Multiplier : 1/1x
Width : 64-bit
Memory Controller in Processor : No
Refresh Rate : 7.80µs
Power Save Mode : No
Fixed Hole Present : No

thought that might be of some interest

People running pro apps like Logic audio. It's not unusual to max out the entire 4 gigs available to the app.

Very interesting....makes me wonder if my MacBook Pro can handle more than 2GB of RAM........ :) :) :) :)
