Um, I'm just going to say this, apparently a 2 gig module of RAM costs as much as the frakking Macbook Pro. That's um, like outrageously absurd!!!

Why spend that much on RAM (when you might not even need that much:2x1 Gig should be enough for anybody. ) when a new 17 inch Macbook Pro costs just as much.

Ya, absurd is definitely the word for it.

and by then 4, 8 & 16GB chips will be out and the now mucho deniro 2Gb one will be in a bargin-bin.... :p

Drolls thinking about way off in the future when theres a dual 16 core (32 cores total) macpro with 16x16gb DDR8 PC-10000 ram chips, hopefully some type of intel sli similar deally with 4x8gb graphics cards and a some form of 20,000k rpm hard drive raid arrary hooked up to my new apple built-in wall size monitor with built-in 64 megapixel camera. Think of how fast CS7 and Final Cut Pro 6 will run on that.

:Slaps self and realizes this dream machine wont happen for many years or proably ever:

YUM! :D ;) :)

Now, let's see: For people who don't care about price, but want a portable PowerMac:
17" MBP: 2700 bucks (2x512 RAM)
2x2 GB : 5400 bucks
Total : 8100 bucks:eek: :D  :p

I see yall's point, but 3 GB would be a lot less money. Stock MBP plus a 2 GB stick...

You know, it might just be easier and cheaper if apple just added 2 more ram slots...:p $1800 for ram! YIKES!

No, the iSight G5 iMacs at 1.9GHz and 2.1GHz only had one slot because they were a thinner design then their predecessors.

IIRC, they have 2 slots....but only one that is externally, and easily accessible. If you're adventurous enough to take it all apart, you can change the RAM in the second slot.

It's likely that price because only about 8 sticks have ever been made...lol...give it time, the prices will come down.

For those interested in upgrading to 4GB of RAM... there appears to be some 2GB sticks (very few) on eBay for decent prices. There's a stick of Infineon ram up for $250 (shipped). It's only 533mhz, but you can deal with that. There's also a set of 4 - 2GB Dell sticks. I'm not sure what brand Dell uses, I know they've used Samsung before and I believe Infineon.

If I had the cash, I'd drop it on them right now just for the bragging rights ;)

The 512 Mb is soldered on in the iSight iMac G5s. There is no second socket.
Developers note

This is just what I recalled seeing from one of the disassembly picture sets. It was in a nasty place, but it was socketed like the accessible one. I guess I must be mistaken and not remember it correctly.

the reason that dell offers a 2x2gb upgrade is because it uses dimm's, and 2gb dimm's are MUCH less expensive than 2gb so-dimm's.

According to Intels' fact sheet on the 945G http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/945g/

It is in fact capable of addressing 4GB. I am pondering picking up a 2GB PC4200 stick and sticking it in my iMac and see what happens. If i can find one. Worst case, if it wont recognize it I send it back. It would be interesting to see though.

Problem is I could only afford one at the moment, so if it worked and i like it, it would be awhile before I could check and see if 4GB is possible. I am sure it is though.

Considering Intels fact sheet says so. However, I know that Windows has a problem with 4GB. It has been a while since I read about but there is a memory hole somewhere in the 3GB-4GB area.

I ran Sisoftware Sandra from a boot camp loaded copy of XP on my MBP. Here is some interesting information.

It also lists information about memory banks, and the number suggests that there is room for more memory

thought that might be of some interest

Yeah the prices will always come down. For example, I once paid big bucks to add two, 32MB ram chips to my 9500. I found a good deal for $1200 and remember being so excited to have the extra 64MB in my machine! When I told my buddies how much ram I had, they all went "Ohhhh, WOW." :D

In the very near future, we will be seeing multi-processor machines as standard and that will drive ram prices. There will also be a spike in prices when Vista "finally" ships. When there is a need, there will be a shortage during the spike, shortly after the spike, there will be a glut in the market and prices will fall. With multicore systems soon to be standard, we will see notebooks with more than two slots and 2GB ram chips that are affordable. I'm actually thinking (hoping) that Apple adds two more ram slots when they revise the MBP to Merom. 4GB of ram would really make a difference for certain tasks.
