Hi,

I've just switched my phone from a 6s+ to an SE, and while I'm in love with the form factor and performance, the one thing I'm really missing is OIS for video. It really does make a dramatic difference.

I'm now reading that the new 9.7 iPad Pro may have the same camera module as the 6s+. Although I wouldn't be able to take the iPad everywhere with me like the phone, I'd really love to have this OIS capability, at least at home. So I might be willing to upgrade from my iPad Air 2.

However, I haven't seen this detail confirmed anywhere and sample video is scarce on YouTube, so I was wondering if anyone with the new 9.7 might be willing to shoot some video to confirm this.

Thanks!

According to the specs, the cameras in the iPad Pro models do not have optical image stabilization (OIS).

Apple has not mentioned it in the specs or anything but iFixit has confirmed it is the same camera module as the 6s Plus so I'd assume the Pro 9.7" does indeed have it although I'm not 100% sure and would like to know for sure as well.

Weird because if it did have OIS, I reckon Apple would promote such a valued feature.

You'd think so but then again if they promoted it regular 6s users may be annoyed.

Maybe Apple has given it the same module as the 6s Plus but disabled the OIS hardware for some reason?

Agreed, Apple would mention this on the spec page, like they do for the cameras in the 6+ and 6S+.

Here's a bit from 9to5 mac relating to the OP's question on video:

As for video capabilities, the 9.7-inch model is capable of recording 4K video at 30 frames-per-second and slow-mo video at 120 fps 1080p and 240 fps in 720p, while the 12.9-inch model is limited to 1080p videos at 30 fps and slow-mo at 720p at 120 fps. Finally, Apple says the 9.7-inch model supports “cinematic video stabilization,” while the 12.9-inch variant does not.

Can the hardware OIS even be disabled?

Thanks for the responses. Looks like the jury is still out, but after seeing the footage in this video, I'm inclined to believe that the camera is not stabilized.

I contacted Apple sales chat on the issue. (Did you try that?) I got the - strange, but interesting - response that Apple basically have not yet announced if the 9.7-inch Pro has optical stabilization or not, I should check back later for the official word on it.

Hence you can see no special features listed on the specs page for the still camera, and the mysterious 'Cinematic video stabilization' for the video camera. So, Apple says: 'stay tuned.'
