Oh, and this point:

This only matters if you're wearing the watch for other people instead of yourself.

Many people do this-- high-end watches can be status symbols and a lot of people out there do want to look good to others when wearing an expensive watch.

I think Apple got it right with keeping the display off unless it's in use.

I was driving tonight and thought of how annoying it'd be to have an LED screen it up while driving in the darkness. Light would be reflecting off the door trim of the car and ruining my night vision while driving and not looking at the watch.

Apple could incorporate a smart band and have LEDs on there always have the time on and some other pertinent info and it'd be less intrusive and more useful. I'd get a band like that.

I see no reason Apple couldn't do an always-on display. My friends Android wear watches all make it through a day with the display always on and they look rather nice too. The raise wrist feature works fairly well but not every time, especially when at odd angles. Having to tap on the watch face to wake it is sometimes frustrating.

The next Apple Watch needs to have always on screen and all day battery life for me to purchase or recommend to others when they ask me what smartwatch to buy. I knew before I purchased the current one that screen only turns on when you raise your arm like a robot but I didn't realise it would get so annoying.

This is a great reason I didn't think of, but I suppose they can have a setting to dim or something similar to existing.

Always on is definitely not needed but I know it can annoy and frustrate people if they can't just turn the wrist and see it. Some get angry that they need to spend another half second touching the screen but I also understand. We look at the screen for less than an hour out of 24 so the need is an old way of thinking. Probably impossible to make raise your wrist 100% reliable. Fails for me once or twice a week.

Other brands can have always on but from the ones I have seen in person, the screen and quality is just not there. You sacrifice something for always on and I don't want to sacrifice the quality of the screen.

I don't buy this argument at all. With OLED's there's no LED backlight. And, in order to conserve power, the intensity of each pixel is going to be regulated by the ambient light. In a dark car, OLED is capable of producing subtle light similar to radium paint on a traditional watch that glows in the dark. In fact, it's an ideal solution for an always on watch, which displays only minimal info necessary.
