They can tell how many were sold through the App Store through downloads/receipts.

But do they keep tabs on their customers? If they did not have a receipt for me, would they still know my computer is running Lion from a database on their end?

Just trying to see the extent of the networking here.

I did, I'm just interested in the networking portion.

Does Apple have a database on their end that shows how many Macs are running Lion right now. :)

Apple has never bothered with keys etc because it's a hardware company for the most part. Do they know who is running what? Yes they do.
