What you've missed is that it didn't get lighter (really), it just got thinner. The reason it got thinner is that they eliminated the air gap in the screen, which didn't save much weight (some construction around the air gap, I guess).

The smaller battery presumably speaks to having to shift things around, and possibly some weight went in to reinforcing the cassis which made up the difference.

The other side of this is that if they had kept the thickness of the original air, it would have had to be heavier by as much as 25%. Sure, it would have been great for battery life, but my iPad 3 is testament to the fact that dropping the weight to the air was necessary and that they had to keep the weight down in the Air 2.

It's not a bad thing - and no, Apple has no obligation to support your investment in a high quality headphone with a 3.5mm jack.... I'm sure some enterprising company will develop a lightening to 3.5mm adapter if Apple themselves do not come out with one.

I applaud their continued advances and look forward to the day my iPad is half the thickness and weight it is now, with a higher quality screen to boot!

I sure hope the next iPad comes with Apt-X codec for higher fidelity music over bluetooth. They can ditch the 3.5mm jack then.

itll get thinner - look at your air 2 from the side - slice off the chamfer and thats the thickness of the next ipad - we will see 5 mm.

i dont care how thin it gets as long as battery life remains good. but id be happy if it stayed right where it is, thicknesswise.

It's fine for it to be thinner and lighter. The main thing that should be done first, however, is slim down the bezels on all sides. Then weight. Only after that is thinness really a concern.

Agree the top and bottom bezels can get smaller. The sides can move into be the same as the mini. It doesn't need to be any thinner at this point. Only way I can see them making it lighter would be to put a smaller battery in as processors become more efficient and make the iPad out of a lighter material. It would be nice to get it close to the original minis weight.

I think maybe apple can reduce the ipad bezel by 50% making it a small n lighter ipad but still remain as 9.7 inch ...
