Apps Can I force Netflix to 720p? (3Mbps!)

Hi there,
I only have a 720p television, and I've set my AppleTV to 720p, no problem.

But Netflix continues to use 1080p at 5.8Mbps. I'm in Australia, so I have a download limit, and this high resolution is totally unnecessary. I hoped that if the AppleTV was set to 720p that the app would recognise that. Similarly the Netflix account options have an option for 480p or 1080p.

Any ideas?

Did you check the Netflix site for your login. I know you set the speed but not sure about this.

How do you know it's streaming at 1080p?

The TV should display the resolution.

Consider getting an ATV2, or see if an AT3 works in forcing those settings.

Downgrade your subscription to exclude HD?

The TV should display the resolution.

Consider getting an ATV2, or see if an AT3 works in forcing those settings.

That won't show the resolution that Netflix is streaming at surely? The Apple TV doesn't adjust it's video output based on the bitrate of the Netflix video.

The ATV4 Netflix app is a mess. It's hard to find content and lacks any meaningful settings.
As for 720 vs 1080, you will see some benefit from the 1080 stream, even when down sampled to 720 you should get smoother gradients and less artifacts.
Still, you should send feedback to Netflix so they are at least aware of the demand for a better app (not to Apple, they don't control anything about the new app).

You adjust your Netflix stream quality in your Netflix user settings, turn off Auto, or max HD setting and make it MED.

Yeah, and that's part of the problem. The "native" Netflix set top experience is very different and in many ways inferior to the version Apple calaborated on for the previous ATV.
