Since I can't prove my issues to them (touch screen randomly stops recognizing touches for a few min), I'm thinking of breaking the phone just to guarantee a replacement. I'm thinking about how to do it. Break the headphone jack somehow (don't know how) or microwaving it for a few seconds to destroy the circuit board all together. Suggestions?

Dude just go to the apple store and pay the 10% restocking fee and get another one.

$199 = $20
$299 = $30

Have never seen them mail off an iPhone. Have seen 3 iPhones replaced on the spot that were purchased from ATT.

Ok I'll be honest with you guys then. The case I bought scratched the chrome on my 3G badly and I just want a replacement. But I plan on telling them that the touch screen is unresponsive at times, it freezes, and such. How would they tell if those things actually happen? What is the diagnostics they run?

Dude that type of behavior is dishonest and irresponsible. Take the issue up with the maker of the case, not Apple.

They do run a diagnostic on the phone, and if it comes back ok, i doubt that they would replace it. But ultimately, it would be up to the person that you deal with in the store.

On my iPhone to be honest the chrome in this small part is not smooth and with light it noticeable but i don't think i'll be returning it.

I wonder if i could lol.

I think that's how it works but wait and get a second opinion by the macrumors member. Also i think this only works in the 30 days of purchase.

Can anyone confirm that if I pay the restocking fee I can get a replacement. Or basicaly just re purchase the phone.

Why don't you go to the store and try? None of us are trying to intentionally break our phones to get a new one so I don't think you'll find someone else in a similar boat. Most of us who returned our phones had REAL problems.

The chrome will scratch even in silicon or rubber cases, nothing you can do. Well, you can do what i did, you can make it a brushed finish. Tape off the screen with masking tape, tape around the back to only leave the chrome trim ring. Get some 1200 grit sandpaper and voila! It actually looks better than chrome IMO.

Or it can naturally through use go into the brushed finish lol

Get a invisible shield or something equivilant, it covers SOME of the chrome but not all of it.

I'm in Austin and the box and other stuff is back in San Antonio. Will they replace my phone if there is light seepage near where the glass meets the bezel. Also, when under direct light, I've noticed that the lcd is a little off centered. Will they replace my phone for these reasons? I'm a little scared to get a new phone though, my current one, a white 16gb, does not have any cracks and I don't want to get a new one that is easily cracked. Any and all responses will help, probably will go to the apple store tomorrow.

Hmmm, then what is the "$19.90 restocking fee" that is showing on my receipt for the phone I returned Monday? ATT DOES charge 10% restocking from zero to 30 days. APPLE does not charge restocking for 14 days. AT&T has a 30 day return policy, Apple 14 days.
Therse is no restocking fee on iPhone 3G.

The receipt should have that information.

It should state the last day that you're eligible to return the phone, and the restock fee associated with it.

Apple's normal return policy is that an item can be returned within 14 days of purchase. If the item is an iPod/iPhone/Mac and it's been opened, then there's a 10% restock fee.

Apple will sometimes waive the return fee for new product launches. The original iPhone wasn't charged a restock fee for the first few weeks after its launch. After that, returns were charged a 10% restock fee.

Like I said. WRT the 3G model. If purchased from Apple, they charge no restocking fee for the iPhone and it has a 14 day return policy. If purchased from AT&T they ALWAYS charge 10% restocking fee but have a 30 day return policy.

iPhone Sales Policies
The purchase and use of an iPhone is subject to terms and conditions found at: http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/ and http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/. In addition, by making this purchase, you expressly acknowledge that:

oA minimum new two-year wireless service plan with AT&T is required to activate all iPhone features, including iPod features. Wireless service for iPhone is solely provided by and is the responsibility of AT&T.

oThe Apple Online and Retail Stores sell iPhone for end-user customers only. iPhone may not be purchased for resale.

oApple reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to refuse or cancel any order and to limit order quantity. Apple may require additional qualifying information prior to accepting or processing any order.

oiPhone may not be purchased for export outside of the United States, either directly or indirectly.

oMaking unauthorized modifications to the software on an iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement, and the inability to use iPhone due to unauthorized software modifications is not covered under warranty.

oiPhone purchases are limited to five iPhones per customer and must be purchased with a Credit Card, Debit Card or Gift Card.

oNo restocking fee will be assessed on iPhones returned within the 14-day return period.
EDIT: Since every iPhone is "preopened" and activated the "if opened" rule doesn't apply.

Like I said, WRT to the original iPhone model, Apple waived the 10% restock fee during the weeks immediately following the launch, and then switched back to their normal policy thereafter (where returning the iPhone to Apple = a 10% restock fee).

With a title like this thread has, people will likely be reading this months from now, so I thought it only fair to mention how this worked last time.

Good point about having to open the box before you leave the store. Hopefully they won't follow suit with the 3G as they did with the original.
