I know there are lots of help guides out there...and I successfully JBed the devices previously, but I am feeling a little overwhelmed since I am trying upgrade it also.

does anybody know of a link where the steps for going from an older version are detailed?

Thanks!!!!

Try this out;

im hoping the jailbreak for the ios 5 will be out soon:)

I think you mean for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, right? There has been an iOS 5 jailbreak since the first beta of the software was released back in early summer.

Thanks! Actually. I want to go UP...from 4.2.1 to 5.

I know I can Google...but then spend hours trying to find the right steps, and then it doesn't work, etc.

I was hoping somebody might say, "Oh, here is a link I just followed and it worked great"!

Anybody do this upgrade path recently? iOS4 to iOS5, JB to JB?

Thanks!!

You can't change firmwares while maintaining your jailbreak. You can try some Cydia package backup programs but I don't recommend it.

So you'll have to DFU restore your phone to 5.0.1 (seeing as 5.0.0 is no longer being signed) and then redo your jailbreak along with any customizations.

Will a loss of JB BREAK the iPad SIMM in iPhone hack?

Well, I tested on an iPod4...and what a disaster it was. Totally back to scratch.

I was just about to do my wife's iPhone 4 but realized a potential DISASTER.

Her iPhone4 on 4.2.1 is NOT a cell phone. It DOES have my iPad 3g simm in it. And, I changed something so that it can be used.

IF I upgrade her phone, and decide NOT to JB it (which is what I am thinking about doing), will I STILL be able to use the iPad simm in the phone? Or will the loss of the JB break the hack that I am using to make that work???

Previously, I used the iPhone4 and used MiFi occasionally, but I downgraded the plan on the iPad simm down to just the 250mb plan, and my wife does not use the MiFi, so I am thinking about NOT even JBing her phone. But, then it occurred to me that she will loose her 3g simm activation.

I'm really confused by your question and situation.

1.) How is it you have an iPhone 4 that is not a phone?
2.) Why are you using an iPad sim? It sounds like whatever problem you're having, that's causing it.
3.) Not sure if this helps at all, but iOS 5 requires activation through the network, so I'm afraid if you are concerned regarding the network detecting the invalid sim, then you should stay on iOS 4.

3. Whoa! Thanks for answering! I am sure glad I asked!

1. I bought an ip4 outright on ebay last December with no intention of using it as a phone. I was just goin to use I as a wifi camera. I have two other iPhone Orginals that serve as our bedside Internet clock.

2. Anyway, I learned after I got it, that I could take my sim from my iPad 3G and put it in the iPhone, change one small thing in the settings, and it works.

Hmm ok. Point is, if I were you, I wouldn't upgrade to iOS 5 without a regular SIM, but I don't have "experience" on that subject matter so maybe someone else can chime in or that question should be asked elsewhere.

Are you sure 5.0 is untethered?

I don't have first hand experience and am confirming with Pod2G, but members of this forum seem to be doing it.

EDIT: I will leave it as tethered from now until it can be confirmed.

Just update/restore to 5.0.1 and jailbreak it before apple stops signing it!!

Is there a difference between updating to 5.0.1 or restoring to 5.0.1?

I'm assuming by syncing the device with iTunes afterwards, all my apps should carry over to 5.0.1 except for Cydia tweaks which I have to re install myself?

I am still on 4.2.1 on an iPad1 and iPhone4.

What do I need to do differently to minimize the reset time?

When I did a teat upgrade on an iPod4, it is really messed up. It was JBed, and now it is like a stock unit.

Thanks for any help!

No, you are correct, chronic dev team claims to be releasing a 5.0 corona package to untether 5.0 in the next few days.

But it turns out that at present you are correct :p

Right now it doesn't work on 4.3.4/4.3.9 -> 5.0.0

I went on to 5.0.1 for the quick untether. No need to unlock my phone anyways. The newest redsn0w release is stable like iOs 4.2.8 was. I will probably sit right here on 5.0.1 until I have an iPhone 5 to worry about jailbreaking. Thanks for keeping it up to date Dwalls90. Some0ne really ought to sticky this thread! lol

I have to completely agree! iOS 5.01 with new untethered jailbreak on my iPhone 4 is very stable and I was able to install all of my paid/unpaid Cydia apps with not one crash or safe mode reset. VERY VERY sweet work and a heartfelt thanks to all those responsible!!!

So, is it now a smart idea to go from iOS 4.2.1 to 5.0.1?

It seems the consensus has been to stay at 4.2.1, but more and more apps are requiring 5.0. Like Mint that I really like on my iPhone 4s that can't put on my iPad because it is still 4.2.1.

So, would those that have said 4.2.1 was the best os, agree that it is a good move now to go to os5?

Thanks!

I'd say do it now, before iOS 5.1 is realeased and you are caught scrambling to update while 5.0.1 is still being signed by Apple. I saw a tweet earlier this evening from p0sixninja saying do it now before it's too late. He's of chronic dev_team.. maybe he knows that either 5.0.2 or 5.1 release is imminent.

Unless you need to unlock your phone on iOS 5, there isn't any reason to be sitting at any version of iOS 4, you are missing some great features in 5!! Yes, OS 4 was awesome. But so yesterday. You will love OS 5;)

Dev team looks to be encouraging the move from 4.2.1 now. http://greenpois0n.com/

I agree with the post above...Do it Now!!! Apple will be releasing 5.1 any day now and that update will probably not only fix this loop hole but will also; as has already been discovered and discussed, not allow anyone to jailbreak once they stop signing 5.01.

My jailbreak was painless and although not as simple as some past jailbreaks, I have become quite comfortable with using Redsn0w. All of my paid Cydia apps installed without any flaws or crashes and even the commonly used free jailbreaks worked just fine.

I can say without doubt that the following Cydia Apps work just fine:

1. [X] iFile
2. [X] SMS+
3. [X] My3G
4.
5. [X] Gridlock
6. [X] iSHSHit
7.
8. [X] BytaFont
9.
10. [X] OpenSSH
11.
12.
13. [X] SBSettings
14. [X] MultiCleaner (KillBackground)
15. [X] WinterBoard
16.
17. [X] Springtomize 2
18. [X] Icon Renamer
19. [X] Romance Fatal Serif Font
20. [X] Transparent Status Bar for iOS 4
*Blank spots are no longer used or were made moot by Springtomize 2

I HIGHLY recommend that jailbreakers do this now or be left behind!!!

Should I JB my 4S whenever it's available? The main thing I want is to unlock the phone and use it on TMO since I work for the company. The 2nd thing I want is pretty much to download emulators, especially a SNES one. Eh, I already have iMAME but no Super Mario.

I'm guessing there is no way in unlocking w/o a JB. If it's possible.

Thanks for the thread btw.

I don't think you can unlock without a jailbreak, unless you buy the phone unlocked. I know ultrasn0w relies on jailbreaking, and I'm pretty sure Gevey does too.
