They totally should do this, it really really would relieve the congestion!

Think about this,

Speculation is that they are allowing delivery of pre-orders today to do exactly this, relieve some of the burden for tomorrow.

If they also started to allow pickups today, wouldnt everyone that plans on going tomorrow go today and then have exactly what they are trying to avoid happen.......extreme congestion just one day earlier thats all.

I think this is the best strategy, allow the pre-orders to arrive today. Let that wave of activation get done then allow the retail sales tomorrow with a second wave.

Selling phones today would be counter productive.

with that said, I just got a call from home that my pacage just arrived..... YAY!!!

just called apple store in NJ, they said stores will not be selling phones early.

I think everyone would. Tomorrow will be a nightmare with activations. It'll work with people in NY, FL, etc for a hour, but won't by the time we go into the stores in Dallas.
