Good news!

I downloaded and played the demo last night on my MacBook Pro (see specs at very top of the thread, graphics card is GeForce 8600M GT)

It ran smoothly with Medium level graphics. High level graphics was locked out... not sure if it was just on my machine or not. There were some issues with pauses before and during cut scenes, but it has been acknowledged by Bioware that these are issues with the demo and will be fixed in the final game.

It's definitely a demo. Lots of stuff is locked out to keep the file size down I suppose. And possibly there will be some areas with more massive fights and performance might be worse, but I am very, very pleasantly surprised by how well it works so far.

I was just wondering what resolution you were playing the game at. I have a Macbook Pro as well from late 2008 with the Core 2 Duo at 2.8, 4 Gb of RAM, and a GeForce 9600M GT. I was running at Medium settings and the game struggled to stick around 30 fps and even then some of the character movements looked glitchy. It should play well on my computer but it wasn't. I'm trying to decide whether to play on the 360 or the PC...I would definitely prefer PC but I was disappointed with the performance on the PC.

I've played all three versions of the DA2 demo (Xbox, PS3, and PC) and I'd rate them in the following order: Xbox 360 > PC > PS3

The game just feels really good with a controller due to it's faster paced combat although you can still pause and choose targets on all versions so the tactical combat option is still there.

I'll probably be buying it on all three platforms, again, so it won't matter either way but if I could only buy one version and I wanted it to perform well I'd vote Xbox 360.

I think I read that you get the PC/Mac version bundled with the PS3 version somehow, so look into that before you buy the standalone version!

Try running the game at 1280 x 800 (I'll need to check if this is available, but this is generally the 16:10 option), and set the aliasing to 2x and quality to low. This will match closer to the console's setting -- which can't really push more than 720p.

Medium settings on the PC is higher than the consoles can muster and your GPU, even though it's technically better, is limited by only 32 stream cores. Your CPU is much much better though. Medium settings is actually DX9 on what used to be high settings. The DA2 higher settings are reserved for newer releases of DX.

Just for reference, my 17" is the same specs as yours, but I don't game on it to be honest. I use my PC.

Anyways, I enjoyed the demo, but the heavy action in the beginning was a bit disturbing. I got a little peeved when I thought they had turned this game into a mindless hack and slash. But the later combat scene showed me it's still the same gameplay as DA:O, so when considering how much micro-managing the first game required, which I played on nightmare, a mouse is the only way I'll play this game.

ChronoIMG:

Curious, why do you rate the PS3 version the lowest? Just wondering how you find it different.

And yes, on my MacBook Pro 2008 (specs at top of thread) I'm running this demo in Boot Camp at Medium settings and 1280x800. Again, I do not doubt that it can look better with a faster machine... I'm just saying that it runs well and looks pretty nice at the settings I'm describing. And I'm happily surprised.

Now you're talking about Portal 2.

Actually the Mac version comes on the same disc as the PC version. So you buy both the PC version and the Mac version when you go the computer over console route.

Confusion pileup in Aisle 6!

Portal 2 for PS3 comes with a free copy of the PC/Mac version; Dragon Age 2 for PS3 does not.

DA 2 Demo seems good on 2010 13" MBP

I installed the Dragon Age 2 demo through Steam (are there other ways?) on my 13" 2.4 MBP w/ 320m booted into Win 7 Ultimate 32bit.

Played around with it last night and put the video settings On DX 11 and up to High (kept anistropic filtering off) and it seemed to run great. No jittering or lag.

Just installed FRAPS a bit ago and played around a bit more. On high FRAPS shows about 9 or 10 fps, but the game still seems to run fine with no lag or jittering. When I put anistropic filtering on frame rates drop to 7 and there is lag.

With detail on low FRAPS is showing around 18+ fps, but I can't say that I notice a difference in game play. Most noticeable difference in detail is the addition of shadows.

Not sure about the game itself as it feels more hack and slash than RPG, but looks pretty. Much faster paced than I'm used to for RPG. Haven't finished the demo yet as I couldn't survive the main fight against the Ogre.

And FWIW, I had updated my video drivers with the 260.xxx NVidia drivers from December using modified .inf files. Today Downloaded the latest 266 drivers for GeForce M products from NVidia and the installer just ran. Previous installers stopped denoting wrong hardware. Not sure if the updated NVidia drivers help.

Happy gaming all.

If I'm not mistaken, BioWare clarified that DX11 (and, thus, high) is disabled in the demo but will be available in the full game.

I ran it with the same machine and it looked and played well on low-medium settings. I was very impressed - in some ways it runs better than Origins and I hope that the mass battles don't slow the game to a crawl.

Can you provide a link for this? I was worried by the odd "loading" and stuttering in the cut-scenes.

All in all it looks like a great game on the PC - definitely love the camera controls better than the XBOX demo (which I also played), but I think they've put a lot of work into making the combat in the sequel very dynamic.

Hopefully the story and characters are just as good.

Ninjamoby: I don't have a link. I read it somewhere on the Bioware forums from a Bioware moderator, though. I've given up on those forums because right now there's only one DA2 thread with about 50 posts per minute, making it impossible to keep up.

Anyone know about the Xbox version having no auto-attack? Is it true you'll need to keep mashing a button to attack?

I had to do that in the ps3 version. Maybe I missed a setting.

I'm pretty sure (more sure than I was about the Ps3 thing!) that auto attack was disabled in the console demo versions, but will be in the proper game.

Hm, really? I played DAO on my 360, but didn't like it that much. Thought it'd be nice to have a mouse for all of the menu options. I'd still prefer playing it on the 360 though—less fuss to worry about with specs.

you don't need bootcamp. Bioware will release for mac version as well. go to dragon age 2 page to check out.

You will need bootcamp, the "MAC" version is via a wrapper and as such will suck huge great hairy donkey balls performance wise.

for example, Origonal DA:O, runs fine, on high, on my MBpros 8600m GT under boot camp, Run the MAC version, under osX and low settings is barely, and i mean BARELY, playable, DA2s mac version is also wrappered, so expect it to run like a dog, or require a mac from 2030 to match the speed you can get out of a bootcamped windows install.

Mac Native , like starcraft 2 or world of warcraft, or just dont bother please developers, given the choice, id rather play in OSX, but if the choice is Windows Native, or wrappered OSX ill take the windows copy everytime.

I didn't read every thread but I picked this up today for my PC, which is set up for games. The DVD includes the Mac version and mentions it on the back of the box. They didn't do this for DAO, right?

The specs are (right from the box):

10.6.5 Snow Leopard
Intel C2D 1.86 Ghz or greater
2GB or greater
DVD ROM Drive (for install only)
9 GB HD
ATI HD 2600, Nvidia 9400 or better with 256 MB of dedicated VRAM

No they didn't do it for DAO, i bought my DAO from D2D for the mac, and my PC versions are store bought, Ill never ever buy another transgameing game again as they just wrapper the PC version, so the spec they list will just barely run it on low, however under bootcamp on the same MAC you would probably get medium/medium-high with no problems.

As a collective MAC owners really should say NO to wrapperd games, native only, otherwise you might as well just buy the PC game and run it under crossover games, you'll get the same performance, and at least that way you can run the game under bootcamp and play it properly.

Yeah, I don't like wrappered stuff either.

I thought maybe, just maybe, Bioware made an in house native version like Blizzard does and shipped it with the PC version (unlike DAO).

Oh well.

This is why I have a PC on the side for games. Of course my MB can't really run anything beyond Angry Birds and Diablo II, so I don't even try. Even if I had a new MBP, I wouldn't even try, just build a Windows 7 game box if you like games.

I am happy to see it come as a hybrid DVD PC/MAC. I installed it today on my Mac Pro 2008 w/ ATI 4870, 8G memory, and it is running fine, wrapper or not. It is very polished in comparison to the DA:O Mac cider port IMO. DL content works etc...

The game is more of an Action RPG then even DAO was, and I honestly am not sure if I like it or not though... but I know both myself and the wife will play through at least once.

I was considering purchasing Two Worlds II for Mac through Steam, it appears to be a real Mac port and looks to be more of an RPG.

HIGHLY recommend Two Worlds II. Awesome gane well worth the investment on PC and Mac. Highly addixtive though- you've been warned!

Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G.

hello

I do not know much about computers but will my imac be able to play Dragon Age 2 with good visuals? I hope that it will look really great but I basically just want to make sure that the game play will not be skippy. I bought the imac the last time the imac was updated. it has a ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics chip. The other information I could find from the About This Mac screen is 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 processor and 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory. I'm not sure what else I need to post in order for you guys to help me answer my questions, but just let me know. thanks

Oh and also, I read on a website that the company released a graphics update today. Do I get that upgrade too if I am playing on a Mac system? The website said "PC" but I just want to verify if that meant Mac too.

Oh one more thing I have snow leopard operating system.
thanks again
