I'm stupid when it comes to computers and specs, so please bare with me. I want to know if I can play Quake 3 Arena and Soldiers of Fortune 2: Double Helix Multiplayer demo on a macbook pro. If the answer is yes, will I have high frames per second (I don't care about the detail of the graphics, I just want smooth gameplay)? Would I be better off buying quake 3 arena for the mac, or getting bootcamp and windows (and installing my pc version of quake 3 arena)? I ask that because I read on a forum that to play soldiers of fortune 2 without slowness, you need to have windows.

I also want to know if I can go to porn sites and not have to worry about getting viruses/computer problems. I screwed up 2 PC's because of my porn addiction . One last thing, how much is shipping on the apple site. I'm curious if I would be better off getting a macbook from them because I have a student discount or if I should just get it at Best Buy.

Thanks a lot

Games perform better on MacOS when they are coded in OpenGL, otherwise use it in Windows and DirectX.

Careful, the most viruses can be found on the dirt roads of the net, EVEN the few Mac ones.

uh, if there's only the pc version of soldiers of fortune 2, do you think you need to install windows on your mac?

why don't you buy a mac and visit some porn sites and see if you get anything. if you do, that means you got something to worry about, if you don't then no worries!

No Soldiers of Fortune 2 for mac? :(. How about you go on the porn sites since you have a mac and then you come back and tell me how your computer is running.

One would think you should be looking for a lady friend instead of a Mac.

Do all your surfing as a non-admin user

without ANY admin privileges or access to documents you would rather not lose/share(just go to system preferences, click on accounts, then click on the plus in the lower left, call it pr0nmasterg) and you should be fine. Fast, reliable user switching is something macs have done for eons while its still a source of awe in the windows world....

If you're going to play games you're probably going to want to boot camp windows.

Also, if you're a gamer you should definitely go with the upgraded graphics options available on the 15 and 17" models.

Wouldn't that kind of ruin the moment- you know, like having to stop and put some protection on? :D

Well shoot, if I'm not immune to porn sites, maybe it would be best if I bought a very cheap computer for porn and a very nice laptop/desktop for games.

Why do you guys prefer Macs over PC's anyways? I don't think I would have any issues with a PC if I stayed off porn sites...

Just don't put your password in or agree to any "codec"/quicktime installations while on the porn sites and you'll be fine.

In my somewhat limited experience , don't most porn sites use Flash Video player (FLV)? I think that has some built in protection from Adobe. The last thing Adobe would want is the bad publicity of their player helping to spread viruses.

On another note, gotta hand it to the OP for being so honest about his porn addiction.

I wouldn't be addicted to porn, if I was confident and good around women. I see pretty girls all of the time, but I never know how to approach them. Since I don't drink or go to clubs, meeting people seems impossible to me. I tried dating sites, but I never get any replies. I would imagine asking a complete stranger out at the mall or the grocery store would make me look creepy and desperate. Perhaps I should join a "how to pick up women" forum.

As long as you just watch porn and don't watch porn that asks you to install anything you should be fine. I haven't had any problems.

Girls are more difficult than porn but its like driving a Mercedes Benz instead of a Geo. Its worth the extra cost ;) Although there is the risk of the ultimate virus.

....kids.....

I think the porn sites that screwed up my computers are the ones with the thumb nails. When I put the cursor over the thumbnail, it shows the link to the video. But sometimes when I click on it, it takes me to a different site with thumbnails. I click on them instead of right clicking and copying and pasting the URL because I'm lazy.

I don't think the porn sites with streaming videos mess up my PC. I may be wrong though...

What sites do you use Gekko? PM me plz.

I don't think we're driving in the same lane, my friend :)

But anyway, the links that sometimes takes you to other thumbnail sites are very common and not dangerous in themselves. They just get traffic money from each other that way I think. The dangerous places are sites that exploit security holes in the browser/video-plug-in+OS combo you're using. If you surf porn using an old version of IE on Windows you'll have an infected computer in no time. If you use a different browser or a different OS you're usually safe, and if you use both a different browser and a different OS, then you're very very safe. Yet, even on a fully patched browser and OS, someone could theoretically make a trojan for OS X and put it on a porn site disguised as a custom video codec needed to watch said porn, so don't download and install anything you find on a porn site no matter what they say. You can safely watch though, and safely download wmv/mpg files.

I'm still at a loss for what to do. I don't see myself never viewing porn...
I'm also not going to be playing the latest computer games. I could buy a PC with better specs and for cheaper...

Would I be safe if I downloaded porn videos and then used a virus scan on them?

you don't have pm enabled...

basically if you don't put your password in, nothing bad will happen. There are no virus's, and all the trojans (all two of them) require admin rights to install.

I'm confused about the password thing. Put my password into what? You mean don't make an account for someone to log on my macbook pro?

I got another question guys. How does Unreal Tournament 2004 run on a macbook pro? I've never played it, but I've heard really good things about the game. How do you guys like it compared to Quake 3 arena?
