Times really have changed since I was a kid. I swore I'd never buy my kids cell phones until they were significantly older, and at 8 and 4 they don't of course have them yet. But in this world these days I think by the time my daughter is 10 or 11 she will have one for safety, however definitely not an iPhone. For her birthday she got a galaxy tab, mainly for the reason that she is having a hard time with reading, getting frustrated easily and doesn't find it fun at all. I thought it may make it more fun for her. So while she can play games on it, I've installed all sorts of educational things to get her to be a little more excited about it.

My son will probably get an ipod touch for Christmas. He feels super left out since his sister got the tablet, and he constantly wants to use my iphone, which is well, mine, and while I don't mind I'd just rather him have something of his own. He can have all the games on it I've already purchased for them. They both have mp3 players so that stuff is just easier put on their new devices.

We are in the same boat, both tech nerd types. It's no different than my mom buying me a playstation or super nintendo or whatever 20 years ago I don't think.

My daughters tablet isn't locked from the internet, but she still doesn't read that well so I don't worry about that much. When they get older that will be different for sure.

If you only really want a messaging phone and not the internet then I would suggest that you skip the iPhone, buy her a regular messaging phone and an iPod touch or you'll end up paying over $360 a year for data which can buy her a new iPod touch! :D

This was my first cell phone when I was 17:

That was my phone when I was 18 - a high school graduation gift. That was in 1998. Kids in my class were jealous - one even said that I was a snob for having one.

Yes, she is spoiled but not a spoiled brat! Big Difference!

I have taught her to respect money and she saves at least half of everything that come her way.

She does allot of chores around the house including poop patrol before I cut the grass.

It takes an act of congress to get her to clean her room but we all have that one thing we hate doing.

She gets straight A's in school.

I'm so very lucky to have two wonderful daughters!!!!

My wife and I have carers in the I.T. field so our family is surrounded by technology and is the reason I am willing to consider an iPhone for her.

However, still to young to have unrestricted Internet at her disposal. I trust her, I just don't trust the Internet!

She a great kid and would never do that. She is not going to try to get around the blocks.

I might still just get her a messaging phone because that will save me $15 a month not requiring a data plan.

Motorola Ultra Classic. I had one too!

why a messaging phone?when you can have google voice for free unlimited text and call!

I didn't get my kid a cell phone until he was old enough to drive, so I didn't have to worry about him being in a ditch somewhere with no way to call for help. 11? iPod touch.
