I bought one unopened on eBay. Silver. The Apple store and Best Buy are not open yet so I thought I would ask on here first.

I suspect apple will only replace laptops they you bought with them, not with private sellers on eBay. but yeah give it a shot.

The problem that I see, is it truly an unopened box. I've read enough horror stories to know that people can easily shrink wrap a box. Plus, the risk of buying a stolen laptop. I'm not saying that's what the OP did, but lets not fool ourselves. Some of those "sealed" laptop sales were due to five finger discounts.

That’s what came to my mind as well. That they would scan it to do a return/replacement and find it not in their system as ever being sold

Whenever I buy anything sealed, I always open it in front of the seller. Ensure the serial matches the box, and also check to see if its locked.

Kind of hard to do that when the seller is in Quebec, Canada, and I’m in Pittsburgh, PA.

Bingo. Who knows *what* is inside the box. "Sealed" is close to meaningless today.

OP - it can't hurt to ask at an Apple store but go with an appropriate expectation that they're unlikely to accommodate you.

If not, if they don't accommodate you, the silver isn't a bad color. It will probably eventually be the more desirable one again, once Space b̶r̶o̶w̶n̶ gray, has made its rounds :)

My wife has the silver MBP and I have the grey MBP. There isn't a huge amount of difference between the two and even though I do prefer the darker grey, I would be happy with the silver.

Just do what I did, slap a dbrand skin on it.

I have space gray, but I got a dbrand skin and offers a level protection from scratches and you have the opportunity to change the color :)

As others have mentioned, I recommend opening the box ASAP because the first thing Apple and/or Best Buy will do is open the box.

It's also possible that the MBP has a French keyboard seeing as it came from Quebec.

Yes -- and it'd avoid certain "questions" if the Apple store were to open the sealed box and find it held something other than a MacbookPro.

Everything on the box is in English. I don’t think Apple sells MBPs in any other language - at least I’ve never seen one before.

I will have to wait until after work to open the box.

You can check the warranty status using the serial number on the box. The site will tell you if the number entered has a valid purchase date. Won’t help much if that number doesn’t match what’s on the product itself though.

Back in 2014 I bought a white iPhone 5s for my aunt, and within 1 hour she changed her mind. Apple exchanged it for a gold one no questions asked.

For Quebec, it is mandatory that French be included: https://www.latmultilingual.com/3-important-facts-about-canadian-labelling-laws/

Québec has additional French language requirements for products sold in their jurisdiction:

  • Every “inscription” on a product, its packaging, container, leaflet, brochure, or card supplied must be in French
  • If there are multiple languages on a product label, French must have “greater prominence” than the other languages
  • Toys or games that require the use of non-French vocabulary for their use are forbidden unless there is an equivalent French product available on the Quebec market (Charter of the French Language, Section 54)
The packaging for my iPad Air, iPad Air2, Macbook Air, and Pro had all mandatory information in English and French rather than only English.

Are you serious!? ****. If that is the case screw that seller. Negative rating and return. He literally had the worst listing I’ve ever seen on eBay. No information other than a blurry image of the box. I didn’t even know I bought it from Quebec until after I paid. Like why the F does eBay even list items when I’m in the US. I never would knowingly buy something from outside the country.

Sure you can. They’ll give you a trade in credit which you can use to purchase the color you want.

It's something that many people are not aware of.

It's quite possible that the seller purchased the MacBook while on a trip to the USA which could explain the lack of French labelling.

By reviewing the spelling of certain words on the MacBook box, you may be able to determine the country of sale. For example: colour (UK English) vs color (US English).

Apple does actually sell various versions of their keyboards based on the region it is being sold in. For example in England they have a different layout because the return/enter key takes up two rows instead of just one row like in US.

Did you purchase product insurance or pay with PayPal with buyer insurance? I’d reach out to the buyer to see if you can return it based on the fact that not all details on the device were revealed at the point of sale. If he/she refuses and you did select buyer insurance with eBay or PayPal you can talk with them about getting the item returned.

Of course, but did you buy the white one from an eBay seller in Quebec that is an undetermined age? Nobody even knows when the unit was actually even purchased by the seller no?

That’s what i get for not reading the thread.

indeed “sealed” means nothing nowadays.

There’s a sushi delivery place near my house where they’ll deliver a sealed sushi box (!!!).
