On a similar note, does anyone know if it's possible to get AT&T to change the primary line? I'm the primary account holder, but the primary line is on my s/o. Is it possible to change them around?

Or should I just count on preordering on the qualified line and going into AT&T to have them swap the phones?

I heard once that AT&T could swap what number was associated with each contract within a family plan. Not 100% sure as I never followed through on it. Might be worth a try. Call and ask.

Yes, I did that a few weeks ago. You can call AT&T and they will change it, but the change won't effect the upgrade status, at least not right away it won't..

Yes. In fact, all you have to do is plug the delivered phone into iTunes and activate it on the account of your choice. No need to take it into AT&T as I'm fairly certain the SIM is delivered unactivated on any line until you plug it into iTunes.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Would Apple pre-register the sim card then box and wrap it before sending it to you?

From what I recall from past iPhones when you plug it in and launch iTunes it doesn't detect an account you have to input it...

Someone previously asked this question on this thread but i dont think it was answered. I am using my dads upgrade to get the iphone 4g, (my brother is the primary account holder) if i pre order the iphone and have it shipped to my house, can i activate it through my itunes and have it connected with my number, or do i have to go into ATT since it was my dads upgrade on his line. Thanks

It was briefly mentioned on the bottom of the first page. If you pre-order the sim should be deactivated when you receive it. So all you would have to do is connect it to iTunes and register it with your account/phone number...

You can order online under your dad line, once you received the iPhone, put your number to activate in iTune. (at least that's how I did it with my 3GS)

You don't need the primary line person to go with you to ATT store as long your name is registered as "AUTHORIZED USERS - RETAIL STORE", login to att account, go to "My Profile" and click "account information", at the bottom add your name.

Please read at the very least this page. Your question has already been answered repeatedly in this forum. A quote of my answering this question is literally a few posts above yours.

:p my bad, the excitment had me doing rash decisions.

The above would be ideal. Not having to step out of my door or pick up the phone to make a call in order to do this, so is this guy below bullsh-tting, or is he correct?
I've answered it numerous times, it's just not the answer you want. You can't buy the phone online with the eligible number and activate it directly on another that's not eligible. It first has to be activated on an eligible account, then an AT&T rep in one of their stores can change it to your account.
I can't seem to find a single person who can confirm that they have actually last year, or in the past ordered on someone's upgrade other than their own and activated the sim for their line that came with the phone on itunes at home. Looking at the activation setup, it appears you could very well do that, but again discrepancies bring me back and forward on this.

Yes, he is clueless. I can't find it right now, but there are posts from people who have done this. The SIM arrives unactivated. Connect it to iTunes and activate it on ANY AT&T phone number. That number will need an iPhone data plan so if it doesn't have one you will be prompted to select one. That's it. VERY SIMPLE.

Last year I just added a line then swapped.

Take it for what it's worth, but I just called AT&T to confirm and the rep said yes, when you pre-order you will pre-order under the number that is eligible for the upgrade.

When you receive the phone you will activate it under your number. The rep said she recommends to call in with the IMEI number before activation to switch it over to the correct account..

But yes, it can be done...without having to step outside the front door.

I agree with the last post. AT&T defined the process last year as an "Upgrade Swap".

The key is to not rush to activate the new iPhone 4 as soon as you get it in the mail. Once you get the phone, call AT&T Customer Care and explain what you are trying to do, an Upgrade Swap.

The rep will first want to have your / the person that owns the line that the upgrade was ordered against, agree to a new contact, this is done over the phone. Once this step is complete, the rep will need the IMEI and the ICCI of the new Microsim and the rep can activate the SIM on your line and provision Visual Voicemail if needed and correctly assign the proper iPhone Data plan.

If you plan to do this on June 24, please plan to be patient and expect to wait in queue for a a Care rep. They will be very busy. If the first rep does not understand what you want, again state that you are doing an Upgrade Swap. Worst case, you just hang up and call back for another Care rep that can assist.

Or just plug it into iTunes. Much easier and less headache.

Alright thanks for the responses guys, I think I'll just try the do-it-yourself itunes route first, and if all else fails I'll pick up the phone and call.

Went to the ATT store today... and the guy said my data plan MAY change, but he doesn't know yet. he said its a "Grey area".

Just wanted to let you guys know...

It seems as if no one at ATT knows whats going on. 3 different people (in phone/store) told me 3 different things....:(

Dude, please do not listen to ANYONE at an AT&T store, they haven't a ****ing clue what they are talking about.

I got so much mis-information on this subject by morons in store. Just call a customer care rep or just read the information posted here. If don't correctly, it will not change anyones plan.

Seriously, AT&T employees in store, for the most part, are rehtards.
