OK, so forgive me if I'm not following, but my wife's 3G is currently eligible for an upgrade and my 3GS isn't eligible until November. I want to buy a 4G and give her my 3GS so can I upgrade her 3G to the 4G and somehow switch SIM cards so I can use the 4G while she uses my old 3GS? I know that would mean altering my SIM to MicroSIM (which I'm confident I can do based on some research) and I'll need to alter the 4G Micro SIM to SIM but do you guys see any problems with doing this that I'm missing? Thanks!

Nope. And if you do it in store they'll take care of it all for you.

Apple calls AT&T.

doesnt matter. things like the 12 month upgrade and using some one else upgrade cant be done through apples computers. my att store is next door to the apple and the att rep said apple isnt allowed to change anything other then what their system gets.

apple cant even give you the damn right area code yet when i called att they did it in 30 secs. its pretty sad.

When I performed an upgrade on my Premiere account, Apple called AT&T who took the FAN account # off my account which then allowed the Apple store to perform the upgrade.

So yeah, Apple can't make the change, but a CSR can over the phone.

Edit: and what we were talking about is swapping SIMs around and activating phones on other lines. Apple can call an AT&T CSR to do this.

Thanks everyone - since my wife's line is already eligible for an upgrade and she doesn't want to upgrade I'm going to just ask AT&T if they'll switch our upgrade eligibility dates. Hopefully that will work!

I have done this. my mothers phone had an upgrade available so i just upgraded hers downgraded mine (so she could have her old phone back) and asked to have the numbers switched.

They don't swap eligiblity dates, they just upgrade the line that's eligible and activate the phone on the phone line you want to.

Yeah, there's no need to add data plans and cancel data plans. AT&T will happily allow you to use any upgrade-eligible line to give you the discount on the iPhone and then assign it to the line you want it for.

We need an Upgrade FAQ that get's stickied.

So, are you saying the following:

Year 1-I can go to AT&T on iDay and sign up for an AT&T account (the line with data plan and whatever I want) and get a discounted iPhone.

Year 2-I got to AT&T on iDay and sign up for a second line and get the newest iPhone discounted. I give the old iPhone to the husband who can now use it with the second line.

Year 3-I go to AT&T on iDay and get the newest iPhone discounted. I give the old phone to my husband who can use it with the second line.

Year 4-See Year 3

Years 5-Whenever-Repeat.

Or, am I off base and missing something here?

Yes, but since each line has a 2 year contract, you're gonna end up w/ more lines than phones or pay a $265 ETF each year ($325 - ($5/mo * 12 mos)).

I have a quick question that I dont really want to start my own thread with... how exactly does upgrading work on release day at an apple store? I have a 3g, and am due for an upgrade, but my iphone broke about 2 months ago, and have been using a back up phone with my sim in it. Am i going to need to bring my broken iphone for any reason (it doesnt turn on)? or do i only need my sim card?

Also what do they do about the micro sim thats in the new iphone, am i going to be able to keep my number (do they just update the phone from att? meaning the old sim card is not even needed?).

Final question.... does my name need to be on the contract, im on a family plan (am over 18 and plan on waiting out infront of the store by myself though)?

guess this was more then just a quick question... sorry, thanks for any answers though

I was in your situation for the 3G. I had to make myself an authorized person on our plan (in my dad's name) in order to renew our contract for another 2 years...and thus get the subsidized price.

So, my plan would work for the first two years then break down. I guess the only way around it is to sell phone#1 to pay the fees and such.

It was so much simpler with dumb phones. You could get a new subsidized one every year.

Or I could adopt someone so that I could continue to get discounts on my phone every year.Hmmmm, maybe I could get them to mow the lawn. Might be worth it. :)

I'm planning on canceling my current line, pay the ETF and open a new line with the iPhone 4 if I do not get my early upgrade price.

That's not true, the upgrade principles haven't changed at all. The only difference is that occasionally iPhone holders get their upgrade dates bumped up because they have a high ARPU and AT&T is trying to keep as many iPhone account holders as it can for that reason.

Okay, so I'm an authorized user on my family plan and since my line isn't eligible for an upgrade for a while, I was going to use my mom's line which is. My question is, can I wait in line on launch day, get the phone on her line because I'm authorized? And is there an age limit thing? Because I'm only 16...

you wont be able to do this, you have to be 18 to sign the new contract, best to pre-order if apple lets us do that.
