If the thin rubberized plastic Nexus 7 (that flexes like Stretch Armstrong) can survive, then I'm sure the machined aluminum housing of the iPad will be just fine.

No.

If Apple knows anything, it's how to make devices feel right in your hand.

i want it to be as thin as possible as long as they dont sacrifice features for it.
the ambient sensor removal on the ipod touch wasnt cool.

I want the iPad to be as thin as a vinyl record.
Obviously that can't happen just yet. One day...

I'm pumped for the iPad 5 though, my iPad 2 feels sluggish. But perhaps I'm spoiled by the iPhone 5.

I'm not sure an iPad could be too thin. Imagine holding a sheet of thick card in your hand. It's not uncomfortable to hold.

How about too narrow? My fat fingers will sometimes wander onto the active display with the current iPad.

There's something to be said for having some amount of bezel space... The optimal amount surely varies from one person to the next though..

iPad 2 thickness is spot on for me. Any thinner and butterfingers me would end up without one a week or two later.

You can always, as you said, compensate with a case, which I do. But that´s because I have butterfingers and tend to drop stuff if not careful :D

I think the iPad is at the optimal thickness. The weight is all that needs to change, for some people anyways.

I'd much prefer a reduction in weight than thickness. But I'd still appreciate it being a little thinner. It's nowhere near being too thin yet.

I would be okay with it being even a little heavier if it was coming from something like making the display thinner to have more thickness for storage, ram and battery and those bits were a little heavier

This all about weight. Nothing else. Sales increase as weight decreases. That's all Apple needs to focus on...

I general love apple's razer-thin design aspirations. With the iPad though, I use it mostly for reading, browsing, etc and often hold it in such a way that the corners rest in the center of my palm. After a while it digs in a bit and leaves a red mark on my hand. Making it any thinner would worsen this, so I like the rumors that it'll soon have more rounded edges like the mini

Maybe I should have asked about the phone?

Thank you everyone.
Lots of good responses regarding iPad thinness.
Wish I would have also asked about iPhone thinness.

I wonder if all the press about bent iPhones will factor into the thinness of the iPad Pro?
:rolleyes::apple:

Yes. I want to see the iPad get as thin and light as a magazine. And then it would be nice if it eventually looked like a transparent pane of glass.

I'm buying an iPad as a holiday gift for family members; needed to decide btw. Air and Air 2 (we have older iPad models at home). A few minutes handling each in the Apple Store made the choice easy: the iPad Air felt good in my hands, while the Air 2 felt, yes, "too thin" (not as comfortable to grip/hold).

Not to mention the "easily pressing LCD from behind" and "vibrations from speaker" aspects of the Air 2, which have been much discussed here -- I tested both (and also, to be fair noticed both on the original Air, to a lesser extent). Anyway, it seems like there are several metrics indicating that the Air 2 is, indeed... 2 thin.

2 bad that is how they are rolling these days.

That's too bad. The Air 2 is really a fantastic device that becomes noticeably easier to handle the more you use it. The extra RAM eases the user experience, and those vibrations from the speakers give it the fullest, most natural sound any iOS device has ever had. Few people outside of this site will ever notice or care about the 'distortions.'

Thin is more portable, but it can also be more fragile. Even if more perceived than actual, it is still real to the user.

If consumers compensate by placing their new thin iPads in thicker portable cases, would such a consumer response indicate Apple miss calculated by going too thin? Thicker cases equal thicker iPads.

Would Apple be better off staying thicker and adding more horsepower, if the end result is thicker cases equaling thicker iPads anyway?

Just like the iPhone 5 and 6 Apple continues to give us what they think we want even if it sacrifices structural integrity. My friend has already ruined her new Air 2 buy placing it behind a cushion on the couch and somehow is go bent. Still works but looks terrible.

Lol @ the people saying it's too thin

It's perfect. Guess iPhone 6 is too thin also, it's the same thickness.
