It's the only Apple phone I am remotely interested in from this year. Still going to pass but if I were to buy something Apple this year it would have been the Air. People simply do not understand how much others are willing to give up or pay for the 'flex' factor. I also think analytical data sent from our devices is telling what people primarily uses their phones for, or how many times they used the zoom function. Personally I think I used it 20 times on my 13PM since 2022.

its a new product line that was designed to eat the market share of the base iPhone 17.

it probably has 15-20% less component cost to the regular iPhone 17, and comes with a 15-20% price hike.

business genius tbh.

This claim is highly unlikely considering the BOM breakdown of the 16 and considering the Air has a larger display, shares the more expensive camera, and has the pro processor

Why are you coping?

Don’t use 2023 prices

1 camera
Apple modem

5 year run rate of cannibalizing regular iPhone 17, 18, 19, 20+ sales

==

20% cost savings on BOM, normalizing the market/users to 1 camera as base iPhone
+
20% higher sale price

Coping? What am I coping with? I'm just pointing out the random stabs in the dark you're taking with no data to back it up. I pulled BOM estimates from the most recent iPhone generation before the new ones. iPhone 16 is from September 2024. I repeat, a 20% lower BOM than the base iPhone 17 is incredibly unlikely.

As you can see, BOTH cameras in the base unit are estimated at <= 11% BOM. Let's be generous and say the missing camera is worth half that, 5.5% BOM. Where does the other 10-15% savings come from? Let's look at the other expensive components in the phone: not the display (Air more expensive), not the processor (Air more expensive). You're saying the C1X is saving apple 10-15% BOM vs the base model, yet the entire modem in the base model is 7%?

No sense.

As I am still rocking an Xr and actually have no problems with it, the much thinner/lighter Air will still be a vast improvement in all senses.
I am happy to hear you say this. I was just reflecting while reading this thread that the last iPhone I really loved was probably the XR. In yellow. I loved holding it and looking at it as well as, you know, actually using it. This was not an analytical judgment, and had little to do with specs and features. I couldn't bear to put it in a case so I was just really careful.

So I'm hoping the Air is going to remind me of that, to some extent. It does so far, judging only from photos and a couple of hands-on videos and early impressions reported by the technorati. Anyway I'm sort of committed now: the bumper and crossbody strap arrive Monday. In that lovely soft blue.

I already told you.

at the economy of scale of cannibalizing 25-70% of the marketshare of the base iPhone over 5 years, apple will realize a -20% reduction in BOM with +20% higher average sale price over the base iPhone.

at the end of 5 years:

they will be selling 50% more 1 camera phones
than
they will be selling 2 camera phones

compound this cost difference over 5 years you will achieve a -20% overall reduction in BOM than had you been selling a 2 camera phone the entire time.

Sure didn’t sound like you were describing a (quite far-fetched) imaginary future 5 years from now where the iPhone Air product line has not introduced any new features. Let’s see the quote:

it probably has 15-20% less component cost to the regular iPhone 17, and comes with a 15-20% price hike

Oh that’s right, you directly hypothesized that the Air (2025) has 15-20% less component cost compared to the iPhone 17 (2025). It was this logic that I replied to. What you imagine will be true in 5 years has exactly zero relevance to the discussion.

There's the gimmick aspect. Left with the glaringly obvious boringness of another regurgitation of phones, they had to come up with something different. Not saying that's it, but there you go.

It's a good idea. That is, if it sells. Maybe it will become a thing?

That Battery. The 17 pro internal battery is 5000 mAh there Highest capacity among this year new iPhone as usual. Why iPhone Air is thin they " sacrifice few things , first obviously the battery capacity. Next the Camera , as the spec already show is not say high end than the Pro and Max. Lastly is Globally eSim iPhone. As they take away the physical sim card slot. In return this is why the iPhone Air can be so thin. As Mention I do like it. Apple know users will complain the battery this is why they come out new Apple MagSafe Only specially for iPhone Air. If you go around check people holding it with that new MagSafe battery attach behind. It is well match and fit yet Still Look Slim. For me as mention i not particular on having the fastest specs , the best camera or speaker. I More curious the next year Apple new iPhone the next iPhone Air like or 2027 which is Apple 20th anniversary. Some claim that year will launch The Fold iPhone I don't bother as i not a fan of fold phone. i still prefer Candy bar phone. For what I see how thin the iPhone Air is, seem is telling us the iPhone Fold is on the way. is like two iPhone Air stick together. Guess I might wait for two years to check out the New iPhone Air by then. I currently using iPhone 15 , battery health is not say great but I just bought a Belkin MagSafe from Apple store just in case while outside I have no much juice left for my iPhone 15. Lastly the new iOS going to officially launch this end of the month if I right. Some already install the beta feel not bad. Like give old iPhone a refresh. We shall see.

I am a very light iPhone user so the Air's battery will probably last longer than me by the end of the day.

But just for kicks, I did order the Magsafe Air battery - probably won't need it and probably will get returned.

From Apple website:

- iPhone 17 / 17 Pro - 6,27” (officially 6,3”)
- iPhone Air - 6,55” (officially 6,5”)
- iPhone 17 Pro Max - 6,86” (officially 6,9”)

Perfect !

I am getting about 0.2" more on the Air than my current 16 Pro.

As I get older, my eyes are not as good, so this is good news.

I don’t really understand why it exists? Kind of a middle ground between 17 and 17 Pro? Instead of the 17 plus I guess? I just don’t get it.
Consider this comparison:

2008: Apple release the Macbook Air. A thinner laptop with less ports, weight and utility than the competition.

2025: Apple release the iPhone Air. A thinner phone with less cameras, weight and utility than the competition.

The Macbook Air was the answer to heavy, cumbersome laptops where the aesthetics were the utility.

The iPhone Air is the answer to heavy, large phones where aesthetics are the utility.

Sometimes there are no real new things, so they have to come up with something to sell. For Intel, used to be clock speed, with Apple is, how thin can you make it.
