One thing you might have missed with the Apple flavor of the Verizon promo (i.e., trading in to Apple with Verizon monthly device payments) — Apple gives you an instant credit for whatever their current trade in value for your phone is. Then Verizon gives the balance as a monthly credit. So upgrading after a year, you’d only lose half of the “balance” credits and not Apple’s instant credit. Granted, the $1000 promo isn’t offered through Apple, but the $800 promo is.Here's the catch with these promos: if you upgrade before the 24 or 30 months is up, you lose all the remaining credit.
So, you might get $800 off your 13, but if you want to pay off the phone before the full term, you'll lose the rest of the credits. I was going to do it, but I was only shown $700 off a 30 month term, and Apple was going to give me $500 for my 11 Pro Max directly. No losing those credits if I pay early.
If you upgrade in a year - you lose half of the credits - $500 goes away. This plan makes the most sense for people who keep their phones for 2 years - that's me and my family. I have found that upgrades after 24 months tend to make the new phone a bigger deal - I don't have the question that many seem to have on these boards: 'Is it enough of an upgrade to go from 11 to 12 - or 12 to 13?' It always makes sense to go from XS to 12 - or 11 to 13. These upgrades always seem a bit more logical to me.this is particularly a good deal for those with damaged devices.
I was already on an eligible unlimited plan so I chose to take th 1000 in statement credits. its basically a free phone and Im fine with not upgrading for a year.

Correct - but I was responding to the sentence '...a free phone and I'm not upgrading for a year.' No mention of adding another line which would be a pre-requisite for not losing the credits. If he upgrades on that line - he loses the credits - if he sells the phone and buys another to put on that line to keep the credits - it doesn't sound like a free phone. Free for a year definitely. You don’t lose the credits. You only lose them if you disconnect or transfer the line. This is from the terms and conditions “Trade-in credits will be applied over 24 months, starting within 1–2 cycles and ending when balance is paid or line is terminated or transferred.”
You can always pay off the device, sell it and buy the next iPhone either outright or with Apple Card payments. The verizon credit will not go away if you simply just change the phone.

This has not been my experience. The trade in was provided as a monthly credit towards a specific device. Once that device was to be swapped, it would be removed. So, I get a monthly credit for the trade in, but paying off the phone early means I miss out on future months of credits and don’t get a discount towards paying it off.You don’t lose the credits. No, the credit is toward the line, not the device. The only way you lose the promo credit is if you cancel the line. This has not been my experience.
