Seams that Burning Double Layer DVD will do the install.
It will definitely not.

Actually, if you restore the downloaded DMG to a dual layer DVD... I would expect that to work, no? I'm not sure why you'd do that instead of using a USB drive, but shouldn't it be the same thing?

Do DVDs not work Startergo?

But @macnavarra I really don't understand what problem you're trying to solve. If you explained what the issue is maybe we could help you.

With USB in place the asr restore fails with OSStatus = 22. If I manually do it with Disk Utility and drag the ESD over for restore I get

Validating sizes...
Could not validate sizes - Operation not permitted
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 1.)

I can't win. Host machine is running Big Sur (11.7.10). I need to go dig up some CD/DVD RW and try that route otherwise any advice on why it fails with USB?

How large is the USB? Do you have a different one you could try?
32 GB. I went ahead and tried High Sierra instead following Apple's

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

I renamed my USB to MyVolume. This completed successfully. 🤷‍♀️ Macbook is now running High Sierra. Maverick is a real conundrum.

I messed up my Open core Sonoma installation yesterday (MBP 15" mid 2014) and was greeted to new OS version without any 3rd party apps, albeit my data in Documents/Pictures/Music/Downloads was still there.

Decided to back it up and start Internet recovery, which surprisingly called OS X 10.9. I'll try to make a clean install but was wondering if someone has any tips how to capture my network logs to catch the App store address from where the recovery partition will be downloading the image? Have raspberry pi (for pihole) and M4 MBP to work with.

Not to hijack the thread, feel free to send me a PM 🙏🏻

Welcome to Mavericks! (Soon, anyway.)

Thanks for the offer but I don't think this will help. We know where the app store downloads from†, what we don't know is the encryption key.

@R2FX Internet recovery doesn't download from MAS, we already recreated how it works and can successfully download 10.9 just as internet recovery would, see the very first post.

For app store it's a fixed encryption key probably but the decryption method likely involves some custom shareplay stuff that would be annoying to reproduce elsewhere.
