Its an upgrade from a friend of mine. He activated the phone and took the
Microsim afterwards and i just cut the sim card.
You didnt have to pay that much amount for
Something thats one time use! I used my friends ipad sim and just traced it. Its a pain but the trick
Is to do it slowly.

I didnt try to use cell data. I actually turned cell data off in the settings menu coz it might accidentally eat my prepaid credits. Im always in or near a wifi connection so it doesnt bother me much.

The only thing i havent tried is facetime. I dont know if its gonna work on prepaid sim.

clovis i have done Facetime and i am on prepaid on original microsim,
but i tested with 1888facetime
call me and we will officially test facetime between 2 pay as you go customers

i did mine over the AT&T pay as you go activation site
and enterd the simcard # of the microsim
and entered the imei of the iphone4 the one on the sim tray
it took 2 attempts the 3rd worked
the first two got hung up on "waiting to activate" screen
but third time was the charm
tested the call and B ingo worked

https://www.wireless.att.com/activations/
pick pay as you go ( on the right hand lower side)
enter your sim, imei, pick a plan ( i picked the simple plan $60 unlimited calls and text) did not add any data YET
using wi-fi
go try it ..... go.....NOW
When you activated your micro SIM as pay go. Did you already have an existing pay go account you moved to that SIM or did it assign you a new phone number as you activated?

^^ what he said. coz i cut my original sim to fir on the iPhone, if i could get a microsim to transfer my old prepaid number to the new microsim, that would be better.

Carlos. No. I did not have a pay as you go
It was new account
Like I said first I called AT&T and asked them, they said. No
I then tried myself, it hung on activating. Twice
Third time it went through quick
I am really freaked why it is not working for you
I seriously want to help you
Pm me and we will figure this out

I just thought of something, maybe mine went through. Because remember mine was bought non commitment
When I bought mine, while other people were getting their phones activated by those geek-A-zoids, mine was in my hands, I was the one that unwrapped and opened it, OUTSIDE the store
Sitting outside watching 3000 hungry people waiting in line
I popped out my ipad's microsim, put it into my iPhone 4
3 seconds later and it said "successfully Activated"
Eventhough it was not working, had no bars...cool. I took it home
Went to that pay as you go website
And activated my original matching numbers iphone4 microsim, to a brand new pay as you go. "Simple Plan" $60. Unlimited talk and text
So I think it is because, I was never asked anything about AT&t
Unlike everyone who was offered the iphone4 as an upgrade and activated to that account, right then and there.mine was never officially activated to an official account. Mine was basically hacktivated with that iPad sim, therefore when I tried to activate through pay as you go, my IMEI did not come out as officially activated to a certain account

that's probably how you got payg to work since you bought it with no commitment and the microsim wasn't tied to an account.

to the people that have iphone 4's with previously activated sims, we would have to find a way to get ahold of an unactivated microsim and activate online. or just use a regular sim already on payg and cut it.

Quick question, can you add a data plan on a pay as you go account?

Also, is this way of getting pay as you go to work on an iPhone 4 just a workaround? Meaning it may not work for everyone? The OP said it took 3 tries.

Yes to the first question. There are prepaid data plans.

2nd question. You can do it two ways. Activate a full size SIM as prepay with a data plan, cut it down and stick it in the iPhone 4. Or do the pay go activation on the website using the brand new micro SIM from the iPhone 4. From what he stated, this was done with a no contract purchased iPhone 4 with no account tied to the micro SIM.

the maximum data you can get is the $20 option for a 200mb data on prepaid plans..

i'm not sure if that would be enough for the iaphone 4.

I was just wondering because I might do that with mine for now.

Now you can't. iPhones are only available on contract as as such only available for people who have a tip-top credit rating and, in essence, can be trusted with money.

you obviously didn't read this thread

i tried calling you earlier but keep getting call failed... go figure
i'll try calling you later today.

i havent tried it yet but maybe we could get an unactivated microsim and have prepaid account transferred to that sim. like when they replace lost sim card. i think they only need the numbers on the back of the sim card or something.

wow.. having prepaid account doesn't mean people don't have "tip-top credit". i have prepaid coz i have an account with verizon and i just want the iPhone 4 and don't want to be stuck with 2 year contract with att. sometimes try to think before you post stupid remarks.

alright, i got mine working with pay as you go. just use a regular sim card and activate normally online by typing in the sim number, zip code. but when you get to the imei number, type in all 1's (111111111111111). it won't work if you type in the imei of the iphone. once you're done, it'll give you your phone number and access to the gophone members section.

so you have 2 options, either cut the regular sim card to fit into the iphone 4 or call up att and have them transfer your number to a microsim. i just cut mine and it works fine. i'm currently using the $60/month with unlimited calls/text, but no data.

everything on the iphone 4 works just like having a contract plan. facetime works as well.

I have my iPhone 4 on AT&T prepaid as well. Everything works. EXCEPT FOR FACETIME... anyone have any solutions to this? I have posted on the Apple Support Forums as well and no one has a real solution to this... :(

Yup I know. Facetime still doesn't work because it won't activate. Did all the steps on Apple Support, resetted phone, took out sim, reinserted sim, airplane mode, etc. everything. Nothing works.

Did you try reloading the firmware?

steps

so if i follow these steps i should be able to get it working?
1. buy iphone 4 at no-committment price
2. cut gophone sim card into microsim card size
3. replace the unactive sim card in new iphone 4 with activated, cut-downed gophone sim card.
4. turn on iphone 4
5. connect to itunes
6. activate iphone

Based on my experience and the experience of others in other forums, facetime does not work on AT&T Prepaid.

facetime is working fine for me on prepaid. have you tried receiving a facetime call?
