Can you do pay-as-you-go on iPhone 4?

Sorry to hijack a dead/old thread but I'm a UK iPhone user with an unlocked handset and I'm going to the States next month - wondering which carriers (if any) will work with my unlocked UK iPhone and if so which ones are best to go with - I'll want some calls to local mobiles, texts, and a buttload of 3G data.....

Any suggestions??
