my apple store said 14 days for color exchanges. i can't be bothered. the space grey isn't awful at all, plus i have a case, so its not like anyone would see the back anyways.

I think that is what apple is hoping many will do.

Can you just image the thousands of refurbs in the first week of sales of space grey they will get from the people that got it just because they told them they could exchange the color.

I am saying you can reserve a phone with a new line, and return the 5S you're using now for a refund.

Now, as far as getting rid of that line is an entirely separate question. Are you saying you want to close that line completely?

If you're keeping both lines open, what you're trying to do will not be an issue
So reserve a phone and pay the amount then when I get the phone just tell them I'm returning this phone and that I want it on the same line as the phone I'm returning is on?

So your saying I could reserve a phone and start a new line and then I could take the 5s I'm using now and that would get rid of my this line I started Friday?

An alternative I can think of is IF you're with AT&T or T-Mobile, see if they will have the contract free T-Mobile available to reserve. That one is unlocked and you can buy at full price.
If successful and when you get to the store, let the customer rep know that you'd like to keep your sole line and just wanted to get the new color to replace the one you bought. They might be able to work something out instead of you having to order a new line

I just responded and thought of this same thing. You'd just have to purchase the contract free phone (assuming you're with att or t mobile) IF it was even available to reserve

You are incorrect. If you use an upgrade, you have only 14 days to reverse the upgrade, which is necessary to keep the subsidized price.

This probably varies by state, since there are laws/regulations regarding cellphone purchases. Regardless if it is a new line or upgrade, CA law dictates a consumer has 30 days to try the phone and/or service.

So in a similar situation, I used an upgrade to buy a 32g Space Gray on release day at an AT&T store. I assume I can return within 30 days if they receive a gold phone and I'll be able to swap?

Read the return info on your receipt. Can't get any more black & white then that....

When I bought mine, the Apple Store guy told me I have 30 days since I wanted a Silver or Gold one. I settled for Black since that's all they had. I actually quite like it, it's the first black iPhone I've owned since the iPhone 4. Still prefer white, but the black is growing on me.
