Yeah. I'll have to keep an eye on my internet usage if I use :apple:TV to rent movies.

With my provider (Vidéotron) and Service (High Speed), I'll only be able to rent/download 5 HD movies a month before busting my limit (provided I don't use internet for anything else ^_^), past that, it'll cost me the funny sum of $31.80 in extra fees per HD movie! I can't wait for them to join the digital media age. Maybe it's time for me to bump up my service a notch. ($$$)

Code:
                    $ Per   --- Max Speeds ---   -- Max Transfers --  Cost Per
Service month* Down Up Down Up Extra GB

Basic $27.95 600 Kbps 128 Kbps 2GB † n/a
High Spd. $50.95 7 Mbps 800 Kbps 20GP 10GB $7.95
Extreme High Spd. $64.90 10 Mbps 900 Kbps 100GB † $1.50
Extreme+ High Spd. $79.95 20 Mbps 1 Mbps 20GB 10GB $7.95
Ultimate Spd. 30 $64.95 30 Mbps 1 Mbps 30GB † $1.50
Ultimate Spd. 50 $79.95 50 Mbps 1 Mbps 50GB † $1.50

* Cost with 12 month subscription, otherwise $10 more expensive ($5 for basic).
† Monthly data transfer (upload and download) Combined.

Edit:

gas price???
not my problem if rogers are *******s, apple doesn't have to be the same, they could have been BETTER instead of following the nose in rogers ass
apple is WAY more expensive than any video club in my area+they ffer me a physical copy for 15$(not apple for 20)

Not to play the devil's advocate but you might be barking at the wrong tree. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple's cut on those price is insignificant compared to the Movie Studios' cut. I also wouldn't be surprised if Apple had a lower price in mind but had to settle for those prices. I don't have numbers to back this theory but we've read a lot of headlines a while ago about studios not happy with Apple's pricing, and I don't think the studios fought for lower prices. That being said, Canadian pricing should have been on par with US pricing.

Around here, the typical monthly cap is around 35GB. I have a commercial account for Cinnamon Peripherals and my cap is 60GB. And those caps include both download and upload (total, not separate). And they charge us 10$ for each GB over those limit. Yes, 10$/GB, that's not a typo. And that's 45$/month for 5Mbits cable access, too (was 3Mbits a year ago).

Still think that your 100GB caps or 10/20Mbits modems are a problem? ;)

 Suddenly Shaw/Rogers don't seem so bad

Why would I rent a movie from iTunes Canada for $4.99 when I can rent it from iTune USA for $3.99??

Cheers,
:):apple:

Anyone ever read through the EULA? I thought it wasn't legal for a non-resident of US to access US iTunes. If not, then I'm all for saving a buck.

Good grief. There is NO WAY there should be any difference in price between the U.S. and Canada. As a matter of fact, why isn't it cheaper in Canada? The last time I checked, our dollar was higher than the U.S. dollar.

I wouldn't buy these anyway - or the ones from Rogers. In my opinion, it's a rip-off all the way around.

Rich

I like the 50Mbps down, but the 50GB limit is crap!

Exactly. Those super speed only allow you to reach that limit oh so much faster. Their competitor (Bell) have better limits (100GM U/D combined) but their top speeds are considerably lower. I guess my point was that our internet providers are falling behind. They don't seem to be able to keep up with the digital medias' growth.

Digital media are starting to become more mainstream, yet, internet service provider threat the clients using those services as power users and are considering limiting the bandwidth when they should be thinking of increasing it.

Ugh, prices should be $2.99, $3.99 and $4.99 like the U.S. for renting movies, not a dollar more. Our dollars are almost on par now, Sony dropped prices on the PSN store by $1 to match the U.S., I hate companies still doing price differences between Canada and the U.S.

The providers have been over-selling their available bandwidth for years while rarely upgrading their networks. Now that customers are actually using the bandwidth, the providers are in panic mode.

edit: yeah, what's with the USA/Canada price differences? Are we still in 1998?

to walk 40 feet?
LOL

and...
26$ for a new dvd, what a ripoff
any new title is in special here around 15$
goes up to 18 after and 3 weeks after, when it' s now an old movie, back down to 12-15$, so apple is still a ripoff

If you have a video store with in walking distance then you very lucky. That is starting to become very rare. For me it would cost $10 in case return trip just to get to the video store.I would aslo not call $5.00 more way more expensive.

This is weird. I checked my Apple TV this morning to see if there was an update and there was none. However the Apple Store in iTunes on my Mac did show the new movies. I am assuming that I should be able to order these movies from my Apple TV? No?

I use Novus for Internet and Cable here in Vancouver and they are great. I get 10MBPS and rock solid. Using Speeddownload, I typically get 1.2MBPS on software downloads.

You now have a one-time offer (all of you Americans) to come back to the fold. All can be forgiven and we will welcome you with open arms. All you need do is lay down your muskets, swear an oath of fealty to HRM and we will open our borders to you.

Think of it! Better beer, great shopping and our scenery doesn't totally suck.

Oh yeah - and you'll be able to get 48 hour access to movies from Apple.

Well, I'm from Seattle, so already have better beer, and scenery.

Seattle: It's Canada for the rest of us :p
(except for the 48 hour Apple movie rentals :()

i love that its available now, but the price, are you kidding me? it should be cheaper than a video store, way cheaper because its online.

1)It is not cheap to show movies online.
2)The prices are on par with ondemand and ppv.

Apple TV also works with SD (Standard Definition) TVs

Canadian Friends,

I have two :apple: TV's at home for my family of four. I love them. They are not perfect but definitely the future. One thing that apple keeps repeating but is not true is that the :apple: TV's work perfectly well with standard definition TVs that have component inputs. We don't have a HDTV yet, it's hard to replace something that isn't broken. That large magnet is just not doing the trick yet.

A few comments about :apple:TV's

1. For movie rentals, if you're in a mood for a comedy you can rent a comedy. You can rent any genre you like. You're not forced to take the selection that is available or that has popped to the top of your Netflix queue.

2. When done with rentals, they disappear. No trip back anywhere. One less thing to do. Nothing to manage. I'm jealous of the 48 hours, I hope the US gets that soon. Is this the price for stealing Gretzky.

3. I rent all my movies from the Apple TVs directly, even though I have a nice Mac and iTunes.

4. The Apple TV works great as a music library and stereo controller. I never unpack my CD's anymore. Burn to ITunes and there they are on your :apple:TV.

5. YouTube videos also a nice feature.

Almost 1200 movies to rent

A poster asked about Catalog.

We have almost 1200 movies to rent now, many of those are also available to buy. There seems to be many more that are buy only. Since I only rent, I only pay attention to those.

There's tons of TV shows to buy as well.

A good site that keeps on top of the rentals especially for HD is
www.appletvjunkie.com

Enjoy.

Apple TV is NOT a better deal.

why?

because we have bandwidth caps on rogers now. so if you watch a lot of movies you will go over your cap and have to pay lots of extra money to rogers. and downloading 1.1 gb movies sends you flying towards that cap pretty fast.

That comment screams your need to change ISP's or whine about them rather than the Apple TV
