I was told repeatedly over the last few days by Fido that is I am not eligible currently, I would have to cancel my current contract and pay the penalty ($200 +Tax) and then I could sign a new contract and buy the phone at the 'regular' price.

For $200 I would do it for sure, especially to snag that 6gb option. Rogers wants me to pay $500!

Part of me says just swallow the $200. But the rational side of me will not let me. Neither will the wife

I will wait. After the launch noise quiets down in a week or two, perhaps they would be more willing to be flexible with existing customers regarding the cancellation policy for existing contracts. But, I won't wait past the Aug 31 deadline for the $30/6GB promo. At that point, it will be either they waive the penalty and I go for it, or I wait until March 2009 when I am eligible for the regular price. At that point, I might still not get one of the data plans are not as good or better than the 6GB promo. If they are still at around the **** offered in the iPhone plans now, I will not be getting an iPhone. I will not sign onto their idiot plans.

I threatened to cancel all my four Rogers services if they didn't lower my cancellation fee to $200 - and they said that I would have to walk away from the deal.

Can you believe that!

I want that 6gb deal man! Those other plans are a screw job!

Well, this morning it's $500 to cancel my contract. So I have to wait until December 18th, to get an iPhone on a crappy 400mb plan. The retentions guy wasn't very helpful to me.

OR - I could buy an iPhone for their retail price - $899 for the 16gb!!!

But, it's a different story every time with Rogers, nothing seems to be set in stone.

I think I'll give up now.

Same situation here. Giving up for now. Until Rogers gets their act together and CS can come up with a universal answer...

Not sure if anyone's aware of this, but I just got through to Rogers on the phone and was told that because I'm on a family plan, and the other line did a hardware upgrade last year, that it extended the contract on the other line too. So I'd have to pay $449 for the 16gig plus a $35 charge. This is ridiculous.

I called customer retention yesterday and refered them to an email I had received from Rogers CS a week before the 11th. That email basically said "yes you will be able to get the iphone eventhough you do not currently qualify for a hardware upgrade". Well, I called them on it and was basically told that this email was vague enough to be interepreted as "you can open a brand new account."

Basically, I was told that they could (as a goodwill gesture) give me an early upgrade from my current phone... to anything but the iPhone. Of course that wasn't what I was asking for was it?

They won't budge for me.

Wait until July 24th. That is when they have been told an official policy for non-eligible accounts will be announced. I figure it can't be any worse than the situation now where they tell us we either cancel and pay the penalty or open a new contract and carry both. I am hoping that they take all the calls they have received about this and to the right thing. That is either let us buy it for a reasonable increase over the 'regular' price along with a contract extension on our existing contract or waive the cancellation fee and let us buy it at 'regular' price. Essentially the same thing. But to expecting us to swallow a $200-$400 cancellation penalty or carry a second contract is dumb. Not sure how they pulled the 24th out of their @sses as the date for this nor why they can't just provide the details now. I hope it isn't because they just haven't decided yet. They had lots of time to prepare for this.

Really? I haven't heard anything about this. Where did you get this info from? I hope you're right ;)

It was in a thread at hofo and 2 fido cs reps confirmed it. Fido/Rogers isn't hiding it....openly telling all to wait till then. Also, the 'new' policy could be 'screw you all, if you want one, pony up and pay", so don't get too excited just yet.

You are giving rogers too much credit. Considering that they showed on the 11th that they weren't anywhere close to ready, i'm sure no decisions will be made until the 22nd or 23rd. As for choosing the date, it was probably supposed to be 2 weeks after the launch, but some moron at rogers isn't smart enough to realize that 2 weeks should mean the 25th.
