Excellent. With this news, I feel that everyone has sacked off this “new phone” thing and I definitely feel like I will get an iPhone X with no hassles.
Doesn't this more likely mean the 8 is not selling as much because people - like you - are waiting for the X? So more people waiting for the X means less chance for you to get one with no hassles.:(

Everybody is assuming:
1) Lackluster 8/8+ sales are due to consumers holding out for the X
2) If X sales are low, it will be due to supply contraints

What if:
1) 8/8+ sales are low because the 8 is an incremental improvement over the 7, the price has increased, people are holding onto their phones longer etc.
2) The X is simply too expensive for most current iPhone users to even consider

I think this is Tim's plan and this is proof it is working. The plan? Seperate their user base in different price levels. Shareholders should be happy, customers not so much.

While the iPhone X is nice, folks that get it will be beta testers. Not many apps will be ready for the resolution or design at launch. Next year will be the time to jump on that ship as developers will have many apps ready for it.
Reminds me of getting my iPhone 5. The letterboxing that I'd get on the top and bottom of many apps looked silly. However, I remember being very surprised at the rate which developers optimized their apps for the taller display. Hopefully it'll be the same for the iPhone X. The only difference this year, however, is that the iPhone X is the "upsell," not the baseline for the new generation of iPhones like the iPhone 5 was, so you'll have fewer people using it. I think the iPhone X should have replaced the old design entirely but that's another conversation. I wonder how quickly devs will jump on board.

I see a few of my friends got 7Plus including my girlfriend, while another friend got an 8.
I didn't see any stockpile issue, not unlike waiting a month for my 6 in 2014.

Anyway, even though I may be purchasing the X, I do expect a few enthusiasts and another few who just want to brag and are buying in for the logo but the rest of normal populace? Not so much considering after tax iPhone X 256Gb will be about 1600$ where I am at.

I'm getting the X very patiently just before X'mas and I quite literally don't expect much of a rush considering the hefty price, I just don't expect there to be a long queue. However I don't doubt that it will be sold out in USA so hopefully other enthusiasts on MR can gets theirs soon and leave a review for the rest of us. :)

Rogers, the largest wireless carrier in Canada, has admitted that it has seen lackluster demand for the iPhone 8 so far.

"What we're seeing is sort of [...] anemic appetite for the iPhone 8," said Rogers CEO Joe Natale, during an earnings call today, according to Reuters.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus pre-orders began on September 15, and the devices launched on September 22, including at Rogers.

Earlier today, China's Economic Daily News claimed Apple has asked its suppliers to reduce iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus production by nearly 50 percent in November and December, just days after iPhone X pre-orders begin.

The report cited an unnamed source who claimed it is the first time in the iPhone's ten-year history that new models will face a major cutback less than three months after Apple suppliers began mass production in China. Given the staggered release of the iPhone X, however, this isn't a typical launch to begin with.

Apple shares declined around 1.5 percent in pre-market trading today as investors reacted to the news, dragging down the Dow Jones.

While many industry observers believe any negative sentiment surrounding the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus spells good news for iPhone X demand, Natale warned about the device's higher price and potential supply constraints.

"The iPhone X price point is about 75 percent higher than the iPhone 7. So it's a very expensive device," he said, referring to the device's $1319 starting price in Canada. "Inventory is a question mark in terms of what we will get."

iPhone X pre-orders begin next Friday, October 27 in several countries, including the United States and Canada. The device launches November 3.

I hope the second "What if" will happen, might teach Apple a lesson, look at just a couple of years ago, iPhones were still reasonable affordable for most.
I can afford an iPhone X but I just won't and so should most people do to lower prices again.

What did Apple expect for releasing the same general phone for 4 years in a row? Especially when the iPhone X is going to make it archaic in just a couple months.

Why would anyone assume Apple didn't expect this? It would be crazy to think they didn't market research the heck out of this and have released the 8 and the X in a calculated way.

But that’s the incentive to get the X. I hate it too, but it makes sense from a marketing perspective.
There is enough other features on X to make it a non issue. The X comes down to cost regardless if the camera is on both or not.

If customers aren’t happy neither are shareholders nor the board. It’s always worked like that.

What if almost 100% of the sales are derived from the Apple store?

I'm assuming it because otherwise why would Apple have to cut production by 50%?

Keep those margins up Apple so fanboys can compensate less sales, they love it.
Yes up the prices a bit more so even fanboys get convinced there is something rotten on this company. It takes decades to build a fantastic brand. Profit driven people who give too little back to their brand loyalist are able to ruin it in years

You don’t need an expert to see that the iPhone 8 isn’t a blockbuster. Maybe they should talk more to customers and look better what the competition have to offer.

While I do expect the high prices to turn off some people, you will still have hassles, I have no doubt about that. It's possible that once Apple takes care of the hardcore "I don't care what it costs, I need to show off" crowd, there could be a significant drop off in X sales by the spring. We'll see what happens.

Of course demand is low; people want the X. The 8 is for people scared by the price of the X. Most people that are buying a new phone done care. These articles are so dumb. The iPhone 8 isn’t really a new phone; the X is.
Incorrect. Some of us can afford the X no problem. However, some of us that have larger hands like the physical size of the 8 Plus. The X is too small.

I genuinely think smartphone hype of years past is gone. Not only are we getting mostly iterative updates, they’re also getting crazy expensive. I can see the average person holding onto their phone for a few years at this point.

I think that's been happening for a few years now, but you'll only realize decent savings if you hold on to it for 3 or more years... at least in the US if you're spreading the cost over 24 months like most folks.

But since the battery in these things start to degrade after a year, personally, I'd rather just upgrade every year and continue to pay monthly like a utility bill. The only expense of this approach is the tax and activation fee which is justified IMO because you get a fresh battery, new camera, improved components, etc. which if prorated over the course of the year, is the price of a large latte per month.

I think the general sentiment is "fork you Apple" for those extortionate prices.
Wonder how many manufacturer would want that kind of anemic demand...

Depends on the investment in infrastructure, and the returns. I'm guessing this is problematic.

But that’s the incentive to get the X. I hate it too, but it makes sense from a marketing perspective.

I would say the incentive of the X is the total oled display and face ID or and those lovely animated emojis. Circle back its really about the display and I'm not sure it's worth the premium.

I know I should probably just buy a used iphone 7 and skip the X but a fool and his money.

What I'd be curious to see is how many iPhone 8s are actually on the Rogers network. This information is based solely on people who purchased one from Rogers on contract.

My wife for example is on Rogers, but we purchased the phone directly from Apple.

FWIW, the store was sold out of 8 Plus models.
