Why are we talking about healthcare again, what does that have to do with high data rates?

Any ideas on what Canadians can do to rectify high data prices?

CRTC web site could be a good start, you can file a complaint here: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/RapidsCCM/Register.asp?lang=E They state on their web site that CRTC does not regulate rates for wireless providers but CRTC does allow wireless providers to eliminate competition – example Rogers bought out Fido or Telus could buy Bell. By allowing to buy out competition CRTC does regulate rates in a negative way.

I didnt mean to stray from the iPhone conversation, I just wanted to address the fact that some people here are out to insult the Canadian health care system. What's the point in doing that?

Just as you said, if you want to vent your complaints about wireless networks, go to the CRTC website and do so. Therefore, if you want to vent your feelings about other countries and their health care systems, maybe you should do so in a different forum.

the iPhone is going to be a gigantic ripoff in Canada, we all know that... it's beginning to frustrate me. Rogers is terrible.

Also interesting is that MTS is partnering with AllStream, which is AT&T no?

No. AT&T got out of "AT&T Canada" a few years ago.
AT&T Canada went alone and changed their name to Allstream.
MTS bought Allstream (and Bell had to remove themselves from MTS).
So there is no AT&T in this company anymore.

I used to work there and went through both transitions.

Actually, AT&T set up their own shop up here after getting out of AT&T Canada. Because of regulations in Canada, they were never going to make money out of AT&T Canada.

fartheststar Do you know what regulations in Canada caused AT&T to leave? I'm very curious to know.

I'm not exactly sure but I think it had something to do with how much they could own of the company. I don't think they could own as much as they wanted. At least, that's what was being said at the time. I don't know if that's the "whole" truth or not.

But the going solo and then getting bought up by MTS made some folks at the top and their friends (former Bell cronies) really really rich.

We need to keep up our discussion and pleas for the iPhone to enter Canada.

Did anyone else get a tingly sensation when they saw the new iPhone Bluetooth headset dock, with the engraving:

Complies with the Canadian ICES-003 Class B Specifications

??

I did.

Telus will buy bell, I'm fairly sure of it. Bell has been squandering its power and money for the last 10 years. They desperately need to change their business model.

Canadian consumers have no protection when it comes to cellular providers. Even a company like Virgin Mobile isn't willing to invest in the Canadian wireless market, solely because Rogers and Bell maintain a great deal of power. Rogers should have never been able to buy Fido, it seems like no matter how powerful Rogers becomes, the CRTC wont even think about the effects of monopoly. As Canadian citizens we are simply being ripped off. There is no competition.

ACTUALLY... Telus lost that bid. The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan now (or will very shortly, pending CRTC approval I'm sure) see the story here a cool $51.7 Bill.

Maybe the new bosses will actually do some good for the company, they are a pension plan after all and should be looking toward the future... maybe GSM infrastructure (rented from rogers to start) then maybe iphone by 2012;)

Don't say that!!!

Might be sooner, but with the Canadian market I wouldn't place too many bets on more than Rogers carrying it by 2008 (late)

I don't think a CDMA version will ever come out. Bell, Telus, MTS, Sasktel, Alliant, Virgin will all eventually have to change technology if they want a piece of "Apple" pie :D

Democracy in action :D.

I've sent a complaint to the CRTC, and am making an appeal to my Member of Parliament (like a Congressman, but in Canada).

I bet they won't do much.

Probably not, you're just one voice that they'll write off as crazy
maybe I should send something to my MP.... Stephen Harper ;)

you need a petition with a lot of signatures to garner attention...
