I did, I just don't see anything downloading.

----------

Now I'm getting the error 1004 when I tried to download mavericks...

I have the same issue.. no amount of holding down alt or pressing download or looking in launchpad makes a difference.. app store asks if I want to download the full thing because its already there and when I press continue it sits there and looks like its loading... but 0 happens... it was doing it all day while at work and still nothing.

trying to get the final build / 2nd GM build from other places but its not very practical.

this dude solved it for me! works perfectly.

For those with issues I worked out how to get from the first GM to final Mavericks direct from the App Store without a second Mac/friend/etc.

1. Launch the App Store app

2. While it’s running, edit /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

3. Change the version numbers to 10.8 for both and save.

4. Switch back to App Store, click on the big Mavericks Banner and it should say “Free Upgrade” rather than "Install". Click on it and it’ll ask for your Apple ID and associate it to your account. Now it should show up in your Purchase History, etc.

5. Now you've "bought" it, you can change your version numbers back to 10.9. Quit and relaunch App Store.

Make sure you launch the App Store first though. If you change your version number first it'll refuse to launch.

That was the solution! Thanks a million :apple:

The "buy" it on another mac running 10.8 and then the download will work as it appears under "purchases" trick doesn't work. Looks like frumpsnake found a better solution anyway.

Using Internet Recovery after obliterating my recover partition was fruitful, as it triggered the app store to grant me keynote/numbers/pages for free. I had heard this was only for computers purchased after Oct 1, which sucked for anyone who bought the new haswell iMac the day it was silently released. My BTO one was purchased in September but arrived in October, so I was a little ******** about not getting the iWork apps for free :p

Hi

This cannot be done in the OSX Gui

you can however do this in Terminal and it worked for me!

Open App Store (must stay open while using Terminal)
Open Terminal
paste this:
sudo nano /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

press enter and enter your admin password on your Mac

this opens the file in terminal

using the arrow keys navigate to the 9 in 10.9 and change it to an 8 so it reads 10.8 (there are two 10.9's in the file only the last once, the last line needs to be edited

press Control-O to exit edit mode it was ask if you want to write the file press enter to save

now download mavericks

once the download starts and you can see in the in the app folder or launchpad or via the app store go back to Terminal and change the 10.8 to 10.9 again

press Control-O to exit edit mode
press enter to save

press Control-x to exit nano

close Terminal

this worked for me on both my Macbook Air and Mac Mini and I am currently downloading it on both

Hi I tried this method (editing only the last 10.9 to 10.8) and I still got the error 1004 when I grid to download Mavericks. I kept App Store app open the whole time.

Please help.

Update: Never mind I got it. I clicked through to the Mavericks page and it shows 'free upgrade'. Downloading now thanks!

Thank you heaps! YES terminal worked! didnt know how to do it before haha!!
WOOO! its downloading :D :D

Mine gave the impression that nothing was downloading, but it was downloading in the background. Once its downloaded from the app store, you'll get an icon to install OSX mavericks in the applications folder.

My progress bar has been in the same position for about an hour and a half now. How do I know if it's actually downloading?

THANK YOU! I was going crazy and no one had an answer. This is the only thing that resolves the reported problem people are experiencing.

Thank god for this forum!

Worked for me too! Thanks! I was frustrated when I first tried this trick, went back to the app store and still just saw download. I clicked on the Mavericks banner, hit the back button, and voila! "Free Upgrade" appeared! :D

10.7.5

Will the above work around work if your OS is showing 10.7.5….not 10.9.

I have MBA 2011 running Lion and cannot Download Mavericks….any help would be appreciated - cheers.

my method using terminal should work, your macbook air is compatible as per the Apple Mavericks compatibility list

the only way is to try it. It only takes about one minute to work it out and if it doesn't just use the directions to revert back the sysversion.plist file

I had the first GM Build, and when I tried to re-download from my purchases page it would not download. I went to the main app store page and clicked on Mavericks and the free button (just like I was buying it) and it downloaded just fine...
