rlin, thats terrific! congrats!! i was going to ask but you beat me to it. its also encouraging bc there is a lot of mixed info online about them checking... it seems like it boils down to who you get...sans thier ability to check...

62S, "The fact that this happened at all in the first place makes me fear for my iPhone though... it sounds like one of the emulator programs or the repo distributing ROMs has a huge bug, or a worm in the code."

what makes you think its the emulator and/or its associated roms or repos? did you find any info on this? if so, can you post the link?

thats what i thought too (gut instinct). it seems like things went bad once i downloaded them. however, its hard to tell which of the three was the culprit bc once i added the repo, i also added the packages so there was not enough time to eliminate a source. if anything, i hope its not the repo, that would deff suck more -- the emulators, while neat, i can certainly live without!

the reason i ask is bc this was my feeling from the get-go. rlin also said he had some roms installed but his crash occurred during a text. rlin also used blackra1n for the JB. darkroom, on the other hand, we dont know what he used to JB or if he had any of the roms etc... wish we knew that info... *correction: it was darkroom who's event happened during a text...

rlin, how long did you have the emulators for prior to the crash? also, what caused your crash?

i probably will not be able to get to the store untill sat. i will let you guys know how it goes.

as for JBing again, i dont think i will hesitate in the slightest. EVERYTHING was perfect until i downloaded the roms... i would, however, like to narrow down the trouble maker(s), the emulators, blackra1n, or other. i liken the JB to something analogous to marrying a super model (the iphone), and then on the honeymoon, she tells you that she has a surprise for you: she is a multimillionaire (the JB)... between SB, stack, and categories, the phone just isn't playing in the same league...IMO

***FYI!!! state-farm insurance will insure the iphone (i think against pretty much anything including a trip into a bathtub...but don't quote me on that...) for the full replacement costs at $30/year. the only catch is that it depends on what state you live in. i live in NY and that is among the lucky states. i don't know which other states do or do not.
also, you need to tell them what category of coverage it falls under since many of the agents will not know. i don't recall off hand but i'm sure google will "know"... if anyone wants that info but cannot find it, let me know and i'll dig it up.

i started having issues when i added other sources onto my phone.

my phone crashed about 15-30 min after i installed the "nes" app (i played the boxing game and the mario for 2 min to see if it worked)

When you go into the Apple store "PLAY DUMB"........ i have no idea how this happened. do these new 3gs crash alot? dont over do it but, stuff like that

they replaced it free of charge no questions asked. i really dont think they cared if it was tampered or not. they just want you happy and taken care of quick.

i wish you the best of luck. This has been a learning experience. i think it will be a while before i hack this thing again.

It would seem to me that there is a link between the ROMs and the bricking. I'd assume it's the repo giving the ROMs out that's the most likely culprit, it probably installed something dodgy at the same time.

That's just speculation, of course, but I still think something about the emulators/ROMs did it.

although the poster's to this forum have probably moved on, these threads live-on to help others with similar problems, and hopefully to find some resolution. so this post if for them.

i have not gotten to the apple store yet...i hope to this week and will update again with the result.

after many many hours of searching online there was no good info regarding error 9 and the scenario i (and others) was having. although no fix worked, thanks to jav who was familiar with this error, and all the other contributors, the situation has reached a resolution -- take the phone back if still under warranty and odds are they will not be able to tell the phone was JBed. one person confirmed this, and i hope to confirm this as well just as soon as i can get to the store...

again, THANK YOU ALL for contributing and helping!!!!!!

get your phone JB insurance if you can, and stay way from emulators/roms/and random repos until these problems are fixed!!

best, fly

Do they check your information, because I didn't buy it from apple, so if something happens (god forbid), could I go to them.

i am very happy to report that i finally made it to the store and now have a new phone!!!

they were extremely friendly, and the genius was a very nice guy!

i explained the situation, minus the JB part (obviously...) and also implied that i was technologically inept to thwart the question. what's more, i don't look like the "stereotypical" prison escapee, lol, if such a look exists. a better way of saying it is that my appearance would not arouse suspicion... if you are over 20, have a sport coat/blazer that fits PROPERLY, and can pull it off (no sneakers...) without looking like you tried, it probably would not hurt to ware it for this sort of occasion.

the genius never asked the JB question. after i told him that DFU failed and i tried it on a friend's computer, he said "good", you saved me the trouble. he plugged it in and the battery had drained completely so while he made small talk, he took out some tool and told me he was checking for moisture. none found. he asked for my phone number and punched it into his computer. he told me that we needed to wait a few minutes for it to charge, and if it does not turn on after that, he is just going to replace it. while waiting for the charge, he said he was going to the back to "check something". i have no idea what? upon returning, he starred at this computer screen, with my phone plugged into it, for about a minute (i could not see the screen), he then tried to turn it on. it did not turn on. and that was it! he pulled out a new phone, activated it, gave me a paper to sign and date, and wished me well.

of course i would like to know what he was checking in the back, and what he saw on his screen; irrespective, he gave me a new one without hesitation.

geek786, i also did not buy the phone at a store... and yes, as aforementioned, he did ask for my info (number) but it was no problem that i did not buy the phone from a store.

i'm going to hold off on JBing again until i get "JB insurance" from state farm lol. i wish i did, but do not get email notifications of new posts to this thread. i will try to check back once in a while to see if i can be of any help since everyone here was of great help to me and i can certainly empathize with how scary and frustrating this sort of situation can be...

Fixed!!!!

Hey guys,

I never ever post on forums but after the effort people have been putting into fixing the never ending DFU loop cycle I thought I better post 10 months on.

How I stumbled across some sort of solution....

1. Fresh installed Windows 7 Home Premium onto a one of my spare partitions

2. Installed Google pack apps (not sure if this matters)

3. Installed Itunes 9.2.5.9 (latest version)

4. Restored Iphone normally under DFU mode

I tried....

1. Irecovery on Mac, XP, Windows 7 RTM

2. Recboot

From all this I can only conclude that the fresh system install of windows 7 and itunes most likely fixed it.....

I hope this helps anyone out there

I have been searching on the internet since my phone started this last night. I can hardly keep my eyes opened, but read this whole thread because it has been the most useful info i've seen so far.

I have a 3G 32GB iphone that I bought from a friend and had it unlocked so that I could hook it up with my network. I had the pohone for 1 day, 1 full day before it did this. It happened after I tried to erase all of her data that she had on the phone, it went to the apple symbol and started EXACTLY what was said to happen to the ppl posting on here. I have tried everything, was up way too late last night searching, all day at work and then tonight. I called my phone company, who told me to call apple, who wouldn't help me at all unless I paid $35 for the call because the warrenty has expired. My last hope was tonight, searching again, or accepting that I was going to have no phone.

I am going to apple in the morning, to see if I can get them to give me a phone

Thank you SO much for the help, MUCHLY APPRECIATED!!!!

:D:D:D:D
