i was looking to get an iPod touch for my car, and was surprised to see that in both Canada and the U.S. that no one is showing any stock for any size or colour of the touch except for Apple themselves. Seems odd to me that just a few weeks before the September product announcements that all the touches disappear from every retail store in North America. Any thoughts on what this could mean other than there's a new generation coming next month?

I see some for sale on the Walmart and Target websites, but they do seem to be getting scarce. This seems too early for them to be running out of stock if a new one isn't going to be introduced until early September. That means 4 or 5 weeks without stores having stock. Stores will end up filling those spots with other merchandise because they don't like open space.

So I would guess either the iPod touch has been discontinued, or we might see a new one released even sooner than the September iPhone announcement.

could be a discontinue. the touch has become apples forgotten stepchild at this point. its not even listed on their main page as a Main product anymore. its been hidden in their search menu or about 3/4 of the way down through their music page.

lets face it, apple has been fading the iPod out of the spotlight for years now. at this point its a iPhone without the phone, and with phones having 64-128gb of storage and possibly being bumped to 256 this new release? yea no its almost pointless.
atleast the nano and shuffle have the benefit of being light and portable and very durable for use as a workout accessory.

I've been handing down my older iPhones to my sister, and I can't see upgrading my two-year old 6 Plus to whatever Apple plans to release in September. The touch is perfect for just carrying around a lot of music relatively inexpensively. The Nano and Shuffle are no good because you can't carry Apple Music offline on them.

I'm just hoping that they upgrade them soon. My Father has my two previous iPod Touchs and he is thinking about upgrading to a new one.

Even though it seems early for a new model, considering the years the iPod touch has been updated (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2015), if we assume that the 6th generation would have been released in late 2014, then it makes more sense.

Still, I would be shocked if Apple updated the iPod touch in the Fall. There has to be another explanation. Maybe they will take mobile gaming more seriously with an updated model?

That's true. But if they're going to update it at this point they'll need to add things like Touch ID, perhaps a bigger screen, maybe even.. 3D Touch. (Remove the headphone jack?) Otherwise there won't be much difference, besides an A9 or A10 chip.

I wasn't expecting an upgrade in 2016 though. No idea why stock seems to be quietly depleting.

i wondered about this a couple weeks ago as my daughter wants one and i was unable to find. Hope they come out with a new generation.

I suppose they could pull an iPad mini 3 and add Touch-ID and Apple pay for online purchases only, but it would be kind of random in my opinion.

If they make a model with a 4.7" screen though, I can see it selling better than the current one. Not very likely, though, since Apple keeps the larger screens at premium prices.

With the introduction of the iPhone SE, I think we might soon see the end of the iPod Touch. On some no-contract providers, the SE is only $100 more ($299 for 16GB, $399 for 64GB) than the comparable capacity iPod touch. That's for the SE outright, no contract, no subsidy.

Yep, Apple and the telecoms want the all iPods replaced by an iPhone
so they can get everybody on that monthly massive money generating gravy train.
One trillion in the bank.

Yeah. Apple wants you to pay them for music streaming now. Money hungry

Perhaps because they are killing the audio jack on the iphones, they need to have consistency and kill them on the ipods as well?
Other than that maybe ios 10 is the last update the 6th gen ipod will be able to handle? I have a 5th gen and it cannot be updated to 10 in the fall.

Interesting point. I personally think the iPod Touch is on its way out. @sracer already mentioned the SE is essentially replacing the Touch for approximately $100.00 more.

I also believe the Touch is for a younger demographic. It's a great device, but iPhones have ultimately consumed the Touch. I personally don't see Apple updating the Touch in the future.

And since it is an iPod, a music and video player, we are going to need 256gb of storage.

Given that Macs have been left languishing for a while now, I don't think that the iPod Touch is high on Apple's radar to replenish anytime soon. It is sad, but I think Apple has begun to turn its gaze away from products it considers to have left behind in the 2000's towards other things..

More band more people are getting smart phones so the touch sales are declining year over year. At this point Apple may just stop making them.

As anyone else noticed that you have to scroll down to the bottom of the screen or use the search function in order to see/order the ipod touches? They no longer listed at across the top of the screen.

It's been like that since around when Apple Music launched.

the 16G models need to go away.

much easier to hold the thinner iPod than a iPhone.

if they made a larger screen version, gaming would be much better. Reading books in bed, one handed, would be great. (But update that Books app too please... such wide margins. I can fit more text on a 4 inch Android device than a 5.5 inch iPhone almost...). You ending up reading a paragraph per Apple screen. Not all of us want to take an iPad to bed to read.

I love mine. I wish it had GPS in it though.

Heck just stick the cellular/GPS chip in it and make it the thinnest cutist iPhone ever.
