But i want to have both! If i want glossy ill just remove the film. The film is great because not only it makes my MacBook Pro matte... it also protect my screen against scratches.

Are you using the film? How do you judge the overall final quality? Do you have any significant picture? Let me know because I have seen that also the Italian Apple store started selling one of those films.

But it's a different case. In my case, it was me who was in the light, the screen was in the shadow, it wasn't hit by the light.

Actually, the second picture in next to the light in shadow and facing away. The picture is actually worse. I'm not telling anyone to burn all matte screens either. But matte screens in bright conditions are as useless as glass. And photos of glossy screens are not representative of actual use because you know and i know that you can look through reflections and pick the images you want to focus on just like you can pick a voice out of a crowd.

Mark2000, I am not joking or exaggerating. In those conditions the current glassy screen is unusable: on dark backgrounds you really do not see anything. On clear backgrounds you get the underlying picture, but it is very annoying.

The glossy in the old MB (and maybe the glossy of previous MBPs - never seen one) is perfectly usable. The gloss on a Sony Vaio is still usable, as well as the glossy on a HP but not this glass. Really.

Ok, but this is now coming down to your opinion. Its annoying. But those pictures are not representative of normal use anymore than mine are. If you put an lcd screen near sunlight it becomes unusable, glass or matte. Funny thing, though, at the very least in your picture the browser was readable. On mine it wouldn't be. So there you go.

Doy doy doy!! Are YOU a photographer? Or are you just a whiner?

I am.

Edit, posting some images of my Matte Macbook in and next to sunlight, just like the gloosy book pictures. Birghtness on Full. Can you pick out the colors? Can you even see the screen?

No, but I can see it better than in the previous glossy photos that WERE NOT taken (purposely) with direct sunlight behind him. In fact, I can't even see your reflection in your screen. What an improvement!

Thanks. ;)

The pictures are different from my opinion. The pictures show a mirror. My opinion is that you cannot work staring at yourself in a mirror. The fact that other glossy screens are better corresponds to one opinion I have. Frankly, with my previous matte screens, I have never seen images as washed out as the ones you posted UNLESS there was a bright object hitting the screen.

If people keep saying "with full brightness" you beat the mighty star...

Abstract, thanks for noticing that.

Ok, once some sees something and reads something and then lies to make their point they automatically win. You're the only pro and only your opinion matters. Those matte screen pics are beautiful. I only use my computer to look at pr0n and I'm an idiot. Good night!

If the environment is very bright, like during a normal sunny day, I can see my reflections also on windows with a white/clear background. With black it is a mirror. Black? What I suppose should be black, because I haven't seen the Black since I started using this display. I only see the Black when everything else is black. I am not even sure I could see the Black again in a night with full moon.

Seriously, for me this display is unusable in normal light conditions. I consider it usable only in the night.

My advice is to actually see it before buying because it might be very annoying. There are people who love it, but for others, like me, is a cause of serious pain.

If you hate it this much (and I certainly do!) have you looked at anti-glare films or even screen replacement? the former is far cheaper and doesn't void your warranty!

Yes. i do have the Power Support’s Anti-Glare Film on my 15" Macbook Pro.

Overall quality is excellent because you wouldn't see the difference between covering your glossy unibody macbook pro with the film & a matte Classic Macbook Pro. It's the same thing... just one has both. You can also remove it and replace it. It protect your screen against the sun. It doesn't stick like tape.

Matte gets washed out when hit by bright light, while glossy is still usable, which one you prefer is entirely up to you ;-)

So why is it that when pictures of glossy screens under less than ideal conditions are posted, the glossy heads all go "OH BUT, YOUR EYES DON'T SEE THINGS LIKE A CAMERA DOES, THIS PICTURE MEANS NOTHING.", but then they post pictures of matte screens in the same situation reversed.

Some people prefer glossy, some people prefer matte, end of story.

EDIT: I see you're basically saying the same thing I'm saying in the last sentence. This post is directed not really at you, but at other people who do what I've described.

That's actually a glossy 2007 MacBook Pro, which is much less glossy than the new unibody machines.

Comment from the photographer himself on that last photo:
sonicwalker(flickr) said:
I saw the new glossy MacBook (10/08) in the store today and the glossy screen mirrors much more than the previous glossy model, which was also there.
I am still happy with my glossy 2007 MacBook Pro. The reflections (if happening at all) are hardly ever a problem, but I really wouldn't want it to be more reflecting.

The real problem is not which screen is better or which one we prefer.

We are tied, bond to a hardware platform. With other OSs you can choose: want matte go for Lenovo/Toshiba/Dell (I am aware only of these three producers). Want glossy? You find it.

With Apple we are forced to buy a limited set of pieces. It would be nice to be able to choose components such as the screen. There are people who can easily switch. For others it is much more costly.

PS. Pictures of glossy screens should include black colors and not only white: with white you don't get the worst part of that technology. Glossy with blacks, not with whites. The linked pictures are not great examples.

for someone that is going to be inside 99% of the time with no sun reflection and will be using it for 3D animation, Photo/video editing?

which would be better to get on the 17 unibody?

1. The old PowerBook (and iBook) displays were horribly dull, both in terms of brightness and colour saturation, when compared to the newer displays used on the MBPs.

2. Brightness of CCFL-lit 'regular' LCD displays (i.e. non-LEDs) degrades over time. If you compare a MBP with a typical, non-LED LCD display with a PowerBook's display, the MBP's display will be brighter than an old PowerBook's display simply due to age. This is assuming they started out at the same brightness to begin with. They didn't. Even at the time of release, the old PowerBooks had displays that weren't as bright.

The PowerBooks look dull and washed out because the display was that way even at the time of release. Then it degraded even further over time.

That's a very flawed comparison. ;)

Anandtech review.

Conclusions:

1. The new Unibody MacBooks are far glossier than the plastic white MacBooks. It's OK indoors, but the unibody MB's matte screen a total mess outdoors.

The old MB's screen was far less glossy.

2. When comparing only the previous generation MBP's glossy and matte screens, the matte screen is clearly superior. Remember that these displays have the same brightness and LCD panel models, so the difference is strictly due to the matte and glossy finishes.

3. The new unibody MBPs are much glossier than old glossy MBP, so imagine the unibody MBPs outdoors! It would be even worse! However, it's brighter, so the difference may not be as great.

Here's a photo of 2 glossy MBPs.

A matte screen beside a glossy.

4. If you're in the shade, the glossy screen may be usable.

5. New unibody MB's screen viewing angles are better than previous white MB's screen.

6. When indoors, the reviewer PREFERS the glossy screen of the new unibody MBPs.

I'd go with glossy because the antiglare/matte sometimes looks like you are viewing the screen through a dryer sheet. :D:D

I have a glossy screen on my iMac (obviously) and even with all of my lights on in my room there is little to no glare/screen distortion. :)

I was wondering whether to buy matte or glossy.

It was only then that I realised I've been using a glossy screen since November, when my Prof. bought me a new iMac. I hadn't even noticed it before that.

Glossy suits me fine.

Is it funny how everything has gone to glossy? Even your new Samsung series televisions are switching to glossy. Almost all of Apple products have gone to glossy.

iMac = Glossy
24in Cinema Display = Glossy
iPhone = Glossy
iPod = Glossy
MacBook = Glossy
MacBook Pro 15.4 = Glossy

The only one that has a anti-glare option is the new 17" MacBook Pro and if you listen to what they said at Mac World 2009, that they provided this option for the people who will complain about a glossy screen. Also notice the it is being only offers in one of the computer (17" MacBook). Is everything eventually going to go to a glossy screen. I my opinion "yes". Look at the list above, everything else did! ;)

Maybe glossy is a smarter choice. Why has everything else has gone Glossy! And it is not just Apple products. There is a reason behind this.

glossy or matte.... matte or glossy.... glossy glossy matte matte..... :D the funny thing is the more info i get the more i think about pros and cons the less i know which one to take! :D maybe apple wants me to buy both, thank god they gave me some more time to decide by delaying delivery :D:(:D

Doy doy doy!! Are YOU a photographer? Or are you just a whiner? Have you ever seen a matte screen in sunlight? It turns washed out and nearly grey scale. You cant do color work in the sun, period. I can't even see my tool bars on the periphery when sun is on or behind my mattebook.

If you can't look through a little glare under normal conditions you have OCD. If you insist on using a computer in full sunlight then neither matte or glossy will work.

Edit, posting some images of my Matte Macbook in and next to sunlight, just like the gloosy book pictures. Birghtness on Full. Can you pick out the colors? Can you even see the screen?

Actually your mbp is a 2.33 with a older ccfl backlighting right?? Of course it washes out LOL.

This isnt the case with the newer LED backlit macbook pro in matte. They look still vivid and imho better than the glossy under extreme sunlighting. Basically under the sun with the LED backlit matte mbp you can still see everything just the same as glossy minus the reflections. I tested this first hand with the previous gen 2.5ghz mbp led backlit matte and glossy (I owned both for a while).
