Just make sure that NO COPY of the GM posted on the torrent is present on your computer. When I installed mine just to test if I really wanted to buy it later on, I partitioned my disk and installed into that partition. Deleted the partition after testing, thinking that will be it. NOTHING. Same Problem. Same Email account showing up.
I later found out I had a copy of the GM on an external drive. Deleted from the external drive and emptied the trash.
Opened Mac Store and VOILA! Instead of showing the DOWNLOAD this time was showing FREE UPDATE. Pressed... Downloading now. SLOOOOOOOW as hell even having a 50MB/S download stream but... Downloading..

Hope it helps. Search for ANY COPY you still have on ANY PLACE or HD on your computer.

Well I'm beyond that now, but it'll be interesting to see if others get a similar result. I had downloaded to my Downloads folder and then dragged the installer to my desktop. I had tried moving both to a temp folder under my home dir and even later to the trash, but still couldn't get it working. As noted above, emptying my trash didn't work for me. :(

Thanks guys, was having exactly the same issue (greyed out user ID) and couldn't figure out why. I also had to delete the installer I had (which was on an external HD) and empty the trash before 'download' changed to 'free upgrade'. On its way down now - very slowly as reported by others.

I was worried I'd ended up with some virus-ridden hack or something.

Interesting that this worked for at least two different people and in both cases, the GM installer files had to be purged from ANY connected drive and the trash empty. I'm guessing that Spotlight is indexing so it knows you have no matter where you have it and the Spotlight index isn't updated to say its not there til you empty the trash. I wonder what would happen if it was on an external drive that was disconnected? It would still be in the Spotlight index, right? Or what if it was in a folder that's excluded from Spotlight indexing? I could be way off base here, but the only common denominator between it being in Applications, or on my desktop, or in a Downloads folder, or an external drive, or some other temp folder... is Spotlight...

I'm slightly concerned/surprised that this happened at all to be honest. I have a legit developer account at work (I'm a web developer) but downloaded the torrent over a weekend and installed it. Surely a GM should be THE GM, not one linked to a particular devs account, or a v1 as some people are suggesting? If it's not the final GM, surely it's not a GM...

Well, technically speaking there was a second GM release, right? So that means the original one is what now... a beta 7? Not sure, but my guess is that the build had the Dev account's ID hard-coded since dev's are limited in how many installations they can do of any specific build. So say they're limited to 100 installs, but 1500 get it due to the torrent. Apple doesn't really know until they try to download it again and then the account gets flagged. Or something like that I imagine. If you're not sharing your developer account downloads, I'm sure you're just fine.

I had a similar issue but with another App.

My brother gave me his MacBook Pro so i set it up an account with my name etc. I also used my own App Store account, however, app store doesn't let me download any updated to iMovie and iPhoto. It keeps asking for my brother's App Store password and his email address shows up greyed out in the email address.

I was told, "too bad, that's the way it is" by a "Genius" at the local Apple Store.

Anyone else have similar issue? Any way around it?

That's a bit easier to get around then an OS update. But it may not be all good news. You can sign out of the App Store, remove the apps, empty the trash, and reboot. But you'll probably have to buy the apps again as they're only free with the purchase of a new Mac. Or you ask him to temporarily change his password and share it with you, you update the apps as him, then he changes his password again. I don't condone piracy, so I won't tell you how or provide any websites, but there's a way to get the iWork/iLife without using the app store (for a while they were available from the app store and from CD/new system builds/restore USB stick/etc). In many cases, mine included, the new versions on the app store will then be available to you for free.

To clarify a bit... the first MBA's had no optical drive and thus had the OS and iWork/iLife apps on a restore USB. If you have one of these, you can use it to install the iWork/iLife apps to your Mac. Once you do, in many cases, if you check the App Store, prior to yesterday it offered the patch updates of the apps. Its one of the few cases where you got something outside the app store, but can upgrade via the app store. This worked in my case. And then as of this morning, the newer versions were available to me for free. Interestingly, though, the IOS App Store versions are still $9.99 for me as I don't have a new iPhone yet. :(

A Similar Issue...

Because I had the previous GM I also couldn't get the official Apple one due, I believe to the App Store licensing process. If you can't click 'Free Upgrade' in the App Store, then you can't download Mavericks, because you don't technically 'own' it (even though it's free). The Irony is, because App Store checks your OS version, it sees that you already have Mavericks and therefore doesn't allow an 'upgrade,' but it offers to 'download' it. However, you can't do that if you don't 'own' it. So here is the workaround that worked for me:

I followed the steps outlined here:

http://justindaigle.com/blog/2010/02/tutorial-change-mac-os-x-system-version/

Open the App Store app. Then fire up terminal and change the OS version to 10.8.5 and the corresponding build number (not sure if the build number change is essential or not). Then you need to get App Store to recheck your system to get it to allow you to 'buy' it. So log out and back in to the App Store and switch to the purchases section and then back to featured section (whatever it's called) where you can hopefully will see 'Free Upgrade' instead of 'download.'

It then gets 'purchased' and downloads.

Well it worked for me.

If I were you I'd undo what you did in terminal after you download Mavericks just so the installer doesn't **** **** up somehow thinking you're upgrading rather than re-installing or something...

Good Luck!

So it finally downloaded and I think I've installed it. It went through the installation steps fine (it didn't even flag that I already had 10.9 installed, is this because it knew this was a later version?) and all seems to be working. How do I now check that I have the 'right' version installed, is it in the 'About this mac' build number or something? What's throwing me is that in the app store, all the previous updates such as security ones and itunes are already showing as installed. Surely an OS upgrade would have removed these updates?

Sooo... looks like I might've made a poor assumption here. According to this article Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/mac-app-store-bug-is-upgrading-illegal-and-trial-softwa-1451279448), my free iLife and iWork upgrades may have been an error. So before you go uninstalling any apps (at least copy them to a thumb drive first), just be aware of this...

1) Go to Apple > About This Mac > More Info. Your build should be 13A603 which is the same as the second GM release. The first GM build was 13A598 or something like that...

2) If you followed the process previously posted about changing the version from 10.9 to 10.8, then that's why it updated. It thought you were still on Mountain Lion and basically installed the Mavericks files over themselves and only updated the ones that were newer than whatever you had previously (presumably the first GM release)

3) The app updates affect the apps, not the OS. The only major change people saw between the first and second GM builds was an update to Mail, which is part of the OS. Updating the iWork or iLife apps only updates them, not the OS files.

Out of all the threads and all the replies, this was the best and easiest answer that actually worked for the problem I was having.

Thank you

Good to know. I had deleted all the copies I had, but hadn't emptied my trash (I was sort of unwilling to in case I need to re-install the GM for some reason... guess I could have always moved it to a USB stick.

So FWIW... here's what finally worked for me: I tried pulling down the *official* release from yesterday from the same place that I got the GM previously. Got it downloaded, but nothing I did would allow it to install. But I found a work-around... first I moved "Install OS X Mavericks" to a temp folder, then Show Package Contents and drilled down into SharedSupport and mounted InstallESD.dmg (this one rang a bell in my head from previous tools for making a USB installer with past OS X releases). I mounted it and went into Packages and ran "OSUpgrade.pkg". It exited quickly, but it did serve to "reset" the ID for the account.

Next I went to the AppStore and tried to click on Download. This time it prompted for my correct username. So problem #1 solved. I was able to log in with my user/pass, but then got a "1004" error, so it still wouldn't download. So the good news was the account ID issue was resolved, but now I still couldn't download it. But googling for "Mavericks 1004" brought me to this other forum thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1658294/

In a nutshell, it says:

So I followed these steps exactly and chose "Free Install", but unlike what it shows above, it still wasn't in my purchase history. Only Lion and Mountain Lion were in my purchase history. However, after clicking on Free Install and then on Download, it successfully changed to Downloading and I have the icon with a progress bar in my dock.

As of right now... its fully downloaded and the installer popped up as it should... I'm going to close all my other apps and run through the installer. If I hit any issues, I'll update this post again. If not, assume the above resolved things for me...

Came across this recent post MacOSXHints.com: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2013102503384317

Interesting because it ties back to the experience some of us were having where we had to delete ALL copies of the installer in order to download it again. Like the poster I had moved my installer to an alternate folder, then an alternate drive, then even deleted it, but didn't dump the trash and never could get it to download again. It wasn't until ALL copies were gone that I had success. Makes me wonder what happens if you have it on an external drive, but then disconnect it? Does it work and let you re-download or do you have to connect the external and purge it first? I doubt its the latter, but if it is I could see that being very problematic...
