OP:

Are you still getting nowhere?

May I offer another suggestion?

Try downloading the Low Sierra (10.12) installer using this link:
Download macOS Sierra
(I believe this is a "direct link" and will immediately download a .dmg file to your Mac)

Open the disk image and you will see a "pkg" file.
Double click that and see if the installer opens.

Hi thank you for your reply. I have tried that date and I still get the same error code under internet recovery mode. I am minded to just order a bootable USB from Amazon. I have ordered El Capitan as that's what I had installed on my system before I erased the HD to reset to factory settings. Hopefully a fresh install from a bootable USB will work unless you have any fresh suggestions?

Thank you
I just reinstalled El Capitan on my 2009 Mac Mini and been through some of the troubles you mentioned.
After some research I found that you need to disconnect your Mac from internet after it has downloaded the installation packages and you changed the date. It could be same case for Mac Os Lion, I don't know, I did it with El Capitan.
Hope it helps.

Thanks how would I download in internet recovery mode?
You don't need that. If you are in Recovery Mode, you change the date using Terminal, then you go to Disk utilities and format you HDD. After that, you start the installation assistant, and once it asks you to reboot, you disconnect you machine from the net. If you get the error in that moment repeat the step of changing the date.

I do not believe there exists a physical disc to install that.
But I happen to have them installer packages. You only need to create a bootable media (USB or disc) out of it.

Hey any way i can get a download link? ive tried everything. I bought this macbook pro 2011 from someone who screwed me over.I erased everything and now it gives me the message of addition components etc...

Since this thread isn't from 3 years ago, like most, I thought I'd offer my experience fixing this issue, in case it's helpful to anyone else.

I was attempting to wipe my MacBook Pro from late 2011 clean. I received the "additional components" error message, which lead me to this thread. Recovery start up offered me Lion, which would have been a few steps backwards.

Through lots of different attempts, I finally achieved some success by following these two articles.
I have a secondary (and newer) MacBook Air on which I created the installer on a USB. (No clue how to proceed without a secondary MacBook, sorry.)
These steps allowed me to wipe my system clean but still have High Sierra when it booted up (instead of Lion). This called for many hours of a slow slow progress bar (or 3), but it ultimately booted up normal.

Thanks for the help here.
Good luck, all!

Hi,
I’m having the exact same problem as the OP and was wondering if I could PM you to download the app for Lion and potentially other OS’s? I tried looking at your profile to see if I could directly message you but there doesn’t seem to be a way to do that. Could you message me?

Here is your fix. You need to download high Sierra onto a external drive (Preferably external HDD) with a minimum of 20gb. Format the drive to Mac OS extended (journaled). Follow this link that contains the download for high Sierra about half way down the page:

once downloaded wipe your external and place the download to the root of the drive. Plug the drive into the malfunctioning Mac and boot up while pressing (shift-option-command-R) this will update the recovery mode and internal files of the Mac from the external drive you plugged in... NOW once recovery boots up make sure you have WiFi turned off. Then go to utilities >terminal and type this command (date 111213142016) press return. This sets the date for the OS original release date. Then do the reinstall process with high Sierra. From the recovery screen. Bobs your uncle

Thanks going to give this a go this weekend!

Can someone please help me on this. I’m not very techy, but one would assume wiping a laptop should be straightforward... I’m just got a new MacBook Pro and I’ve sold my late 2011 pro and I’m trying to wipe it for the buyer but keep getting the same error messages above. I have had this one (the title of the thread) as well as “a required download is missing” and “could not find installation information for this machine” - can someone give me a fix please? All I need is to have the laptop in the setup mode as if it was new so I can give to the buyer.

i’ve attached screen shots of the errors.

Heya

Just wondering if I can be sent the lion installer package please?

Kiernan --

Something to do before you erase the drive (if you haven't done so already):
- Go to iTunes and DE-AUTHORIZE the 2011
- Sign out of iCloud, etc.
- If you have installed a firmware password, DISABLE it.
- If the drive is encrypted, DECRYPT it.

Then...
Can you get booted to internet recovery?
Command-OPTION-R at boot time.
You'll need your wifi password.

If you can get to internet recovery...
Open disk utility and erase the internal drive.
Make sure you erase the ENTIRE drive.

Then...
Try the OS installer again.

Hello, I have the same issue, can you send me the link too?

I just went though this process to get a MacBook Pro 2011 to reinstall an OS on a blank HD. There's a bunch of great ideas with creating a boot thumb drive and changing the date in BIOS but what eventually worked (thank God!) was pretty simple. First I cleared the PRAM by booting up while holding [Command, Option, P, R] and let it reboot twice. Here's a link for this process:

Next, reboot in recovery mode but go with the option to install the latest compatible OS [Option/Alt, Command, R], not the Lion that came with the Mac. I think the problem I was having, like some of you, is that the BIOS was probably upgraded at some point and the recovery tool can't install the original OS. Since you cleared the PRAM, you'll have to enter your WiFi info along with other settings like timezone when you boot into recovery mode.

Please let me know if this works for someone else.

Deanna Fleming -

You didn't explain yourself very well in #42 above.

Please tell us which Mac you have, what year it was made, and what version of the OS is currently on it.

Are you saying that you want to install/re-install El Capitan?
And that you don't have a "full copy" of the OS installer app?

I have a link to a "disk image" of El Cap, not sure it this will help:
Try downloading this anyway.

Hey Jonesey, Just want to say that your PRAM + Alt+Command+R recovery mode reboot allowed me to load High Sierra instead of the Lion it was unsuccessfully attempting, and successfully load an OS on a 2011 MacBook Air. Thanks so much!!!

Same predicament over here. I am getting the Mac OS X Lion for all the options Command (⌘)-R, Option-⌘-R, and Shift-Option-⌘-R ending up with the same error you are receiving. Bootable USB doesn't work either.

Post #40 is the answer that fixed my error: can't download additional components to install Mac OS! Thank you Jonesey!

Hi Priitv,
I am in stuck in a similar situation. Have an iMac Mid 2011. As per internet recovery it is trying to install Lion OSX but it fails saying - unable to download additional components... Is it possible for you to share link of Mavericks which I could make bootable and install? Thanks in advance.

Hello! I am new to this site and am having the same problem as the person you helped on this thread. Do you mind if you could send me a download link for this as well? It would really help me out.

Struggled half a day today to upgrade my Late 2008 MBP from 10.10 to 10.11 El Capitan.
I would have never believed that you need to do system date tweaks to get OS X installed. But there it was. As soon as I set system date back to Now() - 4y (ie. 04/19/2016) everything worked.
They must have some signing certificate that expired before 2020 in there somewhere...

I'm having the exact same issue and hope that changing the date through terminal will work for me too. I'm just not entirely sure how to do it. Could you advise?
I restart, hit Command R
connect to WIFI
click terminal
type " date 1116120011 "
click "quit terminal"

It still brings me back to the option screen that include reinstalling Lion.

help!
