But i don't need the time machine backup, it's from 2 months ago. I want to recuperate the files that were on the internal hd.

It looks to me as if you have deleted them with a fresh install of Mavericks, rather than an upgrade.

Rule number 1, backup all your data before doing anything drastic.
Rule number 2, backup your data regularly.

Well, I did what I was told to do here, reinstall mavericks. During the installation I wasn't asked about formatting or anything.

About rule 1, if I could do a backup, I wouldn't have posted here in the first place. This was the heart of my problem, not being able to access he data on the Mac.

Gave up on this.

Opened the mac and removed the hd, thx Apple.

Can I now connect it to any pc/mac? do I need some special software?

Good luck, if your data wasn't visible under the reloaded OS then it may not be recoverable.

Why not restore from your 2mth-old Time Machine, better than nothing...

I'm doing this for my girlfriend and she has a school project she worked on a lot in the past month, and no backup

So I can connect the hard drive via sata to a pc or just a mac?

A Mac won't see the data (the Mac the drive was in didn't), a PC probably won't see the drive or mount the volume so you would need to format it and that would lose the data in any case....

Best you can do is put it in a USB drive caddy and see....

I couldn't really access the hd. It kept showing me maverick install usb.

How about an answer?

That's what I intend to do. The question is, will any mac without software see the drive? will a pc see it too?

If the OS can't see it you are into special recovery software, there are no certainties here. Your GF may have lost her project but you won't know until you put the drive in a caddy and see. I'm not hopeful.

You've had answers, you just don't like them

I didn't get an answer if I need to get a second mac to connect the caddy to, or if I can just connect the caddy to a windows pc.

I think you need special software on a PC to read the Mac Format drive, another Mac will read it if it isn't damaged.
