What are they going to say? That you're lying? They have no way of proving that you tried to flash baseband. I just said my battery died on my laptop mid-update. Apple's customer service is, for the most part, too nice to try and call you out on something that they suspect but can't prove. 99% of the time you get benefit of the doubt.

For instance, just today I was having problems with wifi on my iPhone 4. The guy showed me that the liquid sensor was tripped on the bottom but said that since the internal ones and headphones one weren't red that he would swap it out.

But yeah I've never had a problem swapping out a failed flashing 3GS one.
 
If it was a newer 3GS (serial xx132 or higher) and you flashed the iPad baseband, you destroyed the cellular radio chip.
The only fix is replacing the chip.
I know Beijing iPhone Repair sells the chips and has directions online, but it is a tricky process.
