The suspected critical parts of the FT log look like this:

"No call info", "null", "registration failed" with valid credentials in the log. Huh.

its almost like the os isn't properly sending your credentials to the server, which is why the server can't log you in correctly, which is why it gives you the registration error?

Sorry for bumping this couple-month-old thread, but I've just tried all of the tricks in here, and installed wowfunhappy's legacy mac proxy, and I still can't get iMessage to sign in. Does it still work for anyone else? Am I just doing something wrong or is iMessage on Mavericks actually dead?

I've just given this another try and it gave me the "error occurred during activation" message. I think I'll give it a while and try again later

Edit: Also tried this on my iMac (was using macbook earlier) and got the same error.

I got it to work, sent myself a test message, and then it signed me out

This does work for other people, right? I was able to sign in once, send myself a test message that I received, and then it signed me out for no reason, and now I can't get back in. I was able to get it to sign in again.. once, and then when I got to the main message screen it just signed me back out. And now Apple won't text me any more 2fa codes so I just have to try again tomorrow. This is a lot more frustrating than it needs to be...

To anyone who does have this working: Does it stay signed in after a reboot, or do you need to sign in again every time? I used to be logged into iCloud through system preferences and it asked me for my password (and then 2fa stuff) every time I booted the computer. If iMessage does that then honestly it's just not worth the effort to me :p

edit: and do app-specific passwords actually work? i've tried using one with imessage, when I type it in it just gives me the "app-specific password required" message. AAAGH

Decided to look through console and I'm getting "server denied registration support" errors so I assume there's nothing I can do here. Oh well, wasn't a very high priority thing to me but I'm disappointed it didn't work :(

If you are on 2FA, you don't need app-specific passwords. You want verification codes. Is your Mac on the list of trusted devices? Remove the troublemaker from trusted devices, one of which appears to be your Mac. Make sure your authentication is 2FA, and re-add the Mac and re-authenticate.

You can also delete all iMessage-related keys and passwords in Keychain Access from CLI. In the Terminal, run

echo your-admin_pass | sudo -S security delete-generic-password -a "message-protection-key" -s ids

I can't recommend signing out of your iCloud account, even though, it may be necessary when following the reset procedure above.

app specific passwords dont work

I think I might've tried too many times because now it just won't sign in no matter what. Just always getting the "error occurred during activation" message.

I got it to sign in a minute ago, it went to the actual Messages screen, but then trying to send any messages just told me "Your iMessage account is not signed in." even though I signed in 30 seconds ago. Strange.

the automatically signing out part is normal
however, if it is happening every time you sign in, it should not be happening and you should contact apple support, perhaps your account got restricted from imessage?

Wouldn't be surprised, I have tried and failed to sign in a billion times. At one point it even stopped sending me 2fa codes to my phone because I'd got too many. A family member's given me their old apple ID to use because it doesn't have 2fa, just user/pass. Hopefully that works now, I'm just waiting for it to be 30 minutes since my last failed attempt. It's a shame iTunes won't let me sign in, or I could listen to that one u2 album while I wait :p

If my appleID doesn't have 2fa, I don't need to use the System Preferences bypass, do I?

Finally got it to work on my macbook. Different story on my iMac though. I logged in, turned off one of the "you can be reached for messages at:" emails because one of them doesn't seem to work, and then I got an error saying "You can't sign in to iMessage on this Mac at this time" telling me to contact apple support with a code, and then the app crashed. WTF

@NoCaps

Yes, I can stay signed into iMessage following a reboot. Yes it does still work for me.

No, app specific passwords do not work.

I do not recommend using an Apple ID without 2FA enabled. Apple appears to regard these accounts as suspicious and you will be randomly signed out periodically.

You must use the the process I posted on StackExchange. I know you say you already tried this; however, note that part of this process is do not attempt to sign into iMessage more than once per 30 minutes. That part is critical. Any attempts beyond your initial one within the 30 minute window will fail with "an error occurred during activation," no matter what.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a feeling you aren't waiting the full 30 minutes between iMessage sign in attempts. That would explain why you are seeing "an error occurred during activation," and why it worked once but not again.

If you are waiting 30 minutes but are still seeing "an error occurred during activation", honestly my first thought is to try waiting even longer, maybe a couple of hours.

In general, be careful to not to spam Apple's servers with sign in attempts.

Edit: Our posts crossed, I just saw your most recent reply. It sounds like you might have gotten your computer blacklisted by trying too many times. I would back off for a significant amount of time before trying again. You might eventually need to actually call Apple Support with that code to remove the blacklist. (But I would still wait at least a day.)

I'm gonna take note of this, if I get logged out then I'll try logging back in with my usual Apple ID instead of the one without 2FA. For now, I don't think I'm gonna willingly log out after the amount of tries it took to get to the point I'm at now.

I think it's strange that my iMac was the one that ended up getting blacklisted, as 99% of my sign in attempts came from my macbook. I only ever used the imac as just "let's see if it works on here instead". Hopefully I don't have to call Apple with the code, because the app crashed before I had a chance to write it down or screenshot it 😬

Edit: Maybe I shouldn't have turned off one of those "you can be reached for messages at:" emails.. I'm pretty sure that was the thing that got me logged out originally the first time I managed to log in. Oops.

It doesn't appear to be blacklisted because I did manage to log in again but I got logged out. I'm not gonna poke this any further for now, I'm gonna leave it for a few hours and see if I can log in properly on the iMac when I come back

That is strange! Maybe it's your IP Address that's blacklisted, or your Apple ID if you're using the same one? I do hope your Macbook continues to work!

Yeah, I think leaving it is the right approach.

Maybe, although fwiw I have one turned off.

Oh, I want to add one more thing:

Yes, it stays signed in, as I said previously.

However, I do sometimes get a dialog asking for my iCloud and/or iMessage passwords after I reboot. In almost every case, I can press "Cancel" and the dialog goes away, and I am still signed in.

Once or twice I have needed to actually sign in again, but it isn't common.

I kept getting that when I was logged in to other iCloud stuff, wasn't aware you could just cancel it and it kept working.

Maybe it's just really strange timing that it happens to log me out just as soon as I turn one of them off 🤷
