Can't sign-in to iMessage on Mavericks?

Strange issue here. I managed to send a message to one of my friends, and then they replied, I received the reply but now I can't send.. any messages to them. At all. Messaging other people (at least, myself) works fine still. Kinda weird.

Wouldn't be surprised, I have tried and failed to sign in a billion times. At one point it even stopped sending me 2fa codes to my phone because I'd got too many. A family member's given me their old apple ID to use because it doesn't have 2fa, just user/pass. Hopefully that works now, I'm just waiting for it to be 30 minutes since my last failed attempt. It's a shame iTunes won't let me sign in, or I could listen to that one u2 album while I wait

itunes sign in works just fine
ibooks on the other hand doesnt. ibooks signin actually broke pretty recently when ios 18 went public in september.

Oh, I want to add one more thing:


Yes, it stays signed in, as I said previously.

However, I do sometimes get a dialog asking for my iCloud and/or iMessage passwords after I reboot. In almost every case, I can press "Cancel" and the dialog goes away, and I am still signed in.

Once or twice I have needed to actually sign in again, but it isn't common.

the imessage dialog rarely appears but when it does i am forced to sign in again
