Can't Update iPhone 4 - Software Update Server Unavailable / Not contactable

Anyone else experiencing this?

I have an iPhone 4 Jailbroken on 4.0.1 software.

I tried to upgrade to the 4.1 GM, and I got this message.

Then I tried to update/restore to 4.0.2 and I still got the same message.

I have no idea why it's doing this. This never happened to me before.

I've received that message before. Close iTunes and then re-open it and try again.

You have anything blocking the port used for Apples update server?
Firewall software or something like that?

Not that I'm aware of... I just restored/updated a couple weeks ago...

It could be an Apple Server issue and not you. I'm trying to download the new Safari update (5.0.2) with the Mac Software Update program on my MacBook Pro and it won't connect.

Hmm.. well I just used Umbrella to bypass Apple's servers and updated anyway!

if you downloaded the GM then you are meant to click option + restore or option + update on a mac (or if you're on windows, it's shift, not option) and point it to the GM you downloaded. if you mean the official release, it's not out until later

I already updated to the GM, using Umbrella.

oh you said you tried to upgrade to 4.1 when you got the message, so it sounded like you didn't get it done in your OP

I didn't in the OP, but a couple of posts up I replied to someone to say I got
To update using umbrella.

i had the same problem with a JB iphone 3gs running FW 4.0.1 i had to sync the phone then update and it worked now running 4.1 and in the middle of JB'ing it and then android in a dool boot have to try it lol

The keyword is Umbrella. Or any other application related to jailbreaking. They usually mess with the HOSTS file.

Open your hosts file in /private/etc/hosts (Mac) or C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc or C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers\etc (Windows)

See if there's a line for gs.apple.com and add a # mark before it to remark it out.

Then, flush the cache or reboot your machine and try again.

I have a semi-bricked jailbroken iPhone, and need to upgrade to 4.3, but iTunes keeps giving me the "cannot upgrade" error.

Did you do as suggested in the pop-up--try again later? Maybe there are other issues with your phone but I got that window this time--and I've got it with previous updates--so I just try again--just too many people trying to access the update server.

what happened was that my hosts file was messed up.
I can thank Tiny Umbrella for that one...
Its been fixed now.

You should download an Application that can allow you to see hidden files. TinkerTool and Onyx, to name a few.

1) Click on the option to allow finder to see hidden folders. This will re-launch finder for you. You'll see tons of files and folders that you've never seen before. **Be careful not to mess with them, if you don't know what you're doing.**

2) Navigate to the hosts file, select it, and go to: File > Get Info... (command + I)

3) Modify permissions (at the bottom of the Info window) to Read & Write. You'll have to click on the lock icon, and input your password for this.

4) Open the hosts file with TextEdit. Save upon closing.

5) Once you've done what you have to do, Set the hosts file's permissions back to its original state.

edit: you may not need to flush the cache, nor restart the machine, but it's never a bad idea...
