For the past month or so I haven't been able to attach files from Finder to any program, whether it be Outlook, Safari, Firefox, Facebook. As soon as I pick a file to open to upload or attach, Finder freezes with the rotating circle and in Force Stop a message that the program I'm using is not responding. I can drag and drop for email but I can't, for example, upload a photo to FB. I assume this is a Mavericks issue...any ideas of how to fix this? I have a 2007 Intel iMac. Thanks.

No other times this occurs (freeze and beachballing)? My first thought is that you hard drive is beginning to die. Run diagnostics on it and backup.

Everything else works well, but I may reinstall Mavericks and also backup.

It's just odd that this is happening when trying to select a file in several applications. If it was just one app then you could probably figure it is the app causing the problem.

Sure, backup and reinstall could help.

At this point I recommend booting up from a CD/DVD (hold C at startup with CD in) or the Recovery Partition (hold Option at startup and select it) and doing a disk repair. Hopefully that will tell you if there is something wrong with the drive.

I still have the feeling the drive is beginning to fail especially if it's the original drive with your iMac. I have the late-2007 model and had the drive replaced twice (under warranty) before I finally just installed my own SSD (out of warranty).

One way of testing if it's the HDD is to clone the drive to an external drive and boot from that external drive. See if the problem still exists. Though this process can take a little while for things to copy.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see about booting from a copy. Disk diagnostics by Disk Utility and Disk Warrior show the drive is good, though there are a few minor unfixable errors. Maybe it's one of these that's the problem, though you'd think reinstallation would fix those. I'll run them again. I guess I've been lucky with this drive. Don't much like the new iMacs though. Not sure what I'll do when this computer fails, though like you, I may just get a new drive installed.

Interesting to note...this is the first time I haven't been able to find a solution for a computer problem on line! I can't find anyone else who's had this problem!

    Same problem

    Hi there,

I have exact the same problem. Thought it would be in "Mail" so I changed to "Thunderbird". Problem only occured since I installed OS Mavericks.
I doubt that this a hardware problem. I have that problem on an iMac, MacBook pro and MacBook Air.
    Haven't found a solution yet.

    Cheers

Yes, I also think it's Mavericks. Though the problem is only on my iMac and not on my Macbook Pro.

Instead of relying on the inbuilt disk utility checks, download Smart Utility http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php

It is far superior in detecting disk errors. I had a failing disk that the OSX Utilities just couldn't detect, Smart utility did though.

Try looking in the Console application after you get a Finder freeze, and report what it tells you. Could be a bunch of things.

Can you copy from folder to folder? To other volumes? Does this happen with Open... dialogs, or just when you drag and drop? Does it happen with files from anywhere, or just files from certain folders?

One suspect I'd eliminate is permissions. And it might be the permissions on your Documents or home folders, which requires more than just running Repair Permissions in Disk Utility (you have to start up from another volume and run resetpassword from Terminal, which gives you the option to reset default permissions on your home folder, unless there's another way others can volunteer).

Thanks for the utility. It says my hard drive is fine.

I can copy and past in every other way, including to emails. I just can't attach a file using Finder. I tried to get something on Terminal by starting T up both before and after trying to attach a file, but Terminal doesn't show anything. Is there a certain way to get Terminal to record actions?

Ok - it seems I could narrow down the problem:

The problem always occurs when a program (Thunderbird, Outlook, Firefox, Mail, ...) tries to download or upload a file to / from the folder "Desktop".

If the default folder e.g. for "Save attachment" is not "Desktop" it seems to work fine. Browsing through the folders and choosing "Desktop" -> Finder frezes again.

What I have to figure out now is how to tell all applications that the default folder is not "Desktop"

    Finder Freezes With All Attachments

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I can't use Finder to attach a file to any program, whether in Safari, Outlook or elsewhere. Finder is slow to show files when I want to attach, and then after a few moments the spinning wheel comes and I need to force quit to move on. In Force Quit, the program that Finder screws up says "not responding". I can drag and drop. Any ideas of how I can fix this problem.

You just have to create the folder '/Users/YourName/Library/Containers/com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper/Data'

You might already have this folder, however it will be an alias, delete the alias and create the folder named "Data" reboot and your good to go.

Thanks for your help, but I'm a bit confused about how to add this folder. When I go into User, at the next level there is no Library. I have a Library folder as part of HD. A search doesn't bring up Container anywhere on the computer. Could you please spell out how I should go about adding this folder? Thanks.

Press in combination on your keyboard from the Finder

    Shift + Command + G

    or

From the desktop select the Go menu and pick Go To Folder and then paste
    /Users/YourName/Library/Containers/com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper/Data

Where it says "YourName" that is the name of your home folder.

I deleted the Data folder, created a new one and rebooted, but nothing has changed. There were various folders within the original Data folder that were also deleted, including desktop, downloads, etc. None reappeared after the reboot. This is right?

Yes that is correct, QuickLook will be rebuilding the cache files, you should have noticed a fix for it ASAP.

    double check www.apple.com/support

The folders will be replaced inside the Data folder as soon as QuickLook is finished rebuilding it's cache files.

This morning I have a series of new folders in the Data folder that are completely unlike what was there before.

    It goes Data->Library->Preferences->>ByHost/com.apple.TextEdit.plist->com.apple...4f028.plist

Perhaps I should just replace the new Data folder with the old one?

    Finder still freezing.

    Hi,

I have exactly the same issue, when I upload or attach a file since the desktop, the application (browser, photoshop, any...) crashes and I have to force its exit.

I have posted in several mac forums without success.

I have tried the solution which was told here ( replace /Users/MyName/Library/Containers/com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper/Data and reboot) but the problem is still present.

    Could someone help me?

    I'm using Mac OS X 10.9.2
