Possible Fix

I am having the same problem since upgrading to maverick, is there any way to go back to mountain lion?

I have been having this problem for a while. I uninstalled SkyDrive and my problem was fixed. It seems that the attachment routine was looking here and failing as MS discontinued Skydrive.

OneDrive is now active and works OK.

May be a coincidence - maybe not.

Worth a shot!

Hi all, first time poster.

I too was having the problem where Finder was freezing whenever I tried to attach a file in any application at all. It would also freeze on trying to export a photo from Lightroom. Basically anytime I needed to access a file in Finder through a third party application.

I had only recently done a clean install on my iMac so I was fairly sure it wasn't this but I did verify & repair disk permissions to check. To no avail, the problem still existed.

After I did a clean install I decided that I wanted all my photo application icons on my desktop along the left hand side in one place (rather than with all other types of applications in my Dock.

I was just looking at my desktop screen in despair and said feck it I'll delete all the aliases for the photo applications off of the desktop and see what happens. It's worth a shot I said.

BINGO!

Everything is back working fine for me now. I reckon when using Finder to attach a file, my iMac was freezing because it was 'looking' at all the application aliases in the Desktop tab and freaking out (so to speak).

I was having the exact same problem on my Macbook Air by the way. I deleted app icons from Macbook Air Desktop and it is now working as it should too.

The problem could have been with one certain individual application but I am not bothered to find out as all is working fine on both computers and I will just open applications from their folder.

I know it's sounds way to basic a fix but it worked for me so I just thought I'd share.

Let me know if I'm a silly lunatic too :)

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I can't use Finder to attach a file to any program, whether in Safari, Outlook or elsewhere. Finder is slow to show files when I want to attach, and then after a few moments the spinning wheel comes and I need to force quit to move on. In Force Quit, the program that Finder screws up says "not responding". I can drag and drop. Any ideas of how I can fix this problem.

Ok - it seems I could narrow down the problem:

The problem always occurs when a program (Thunderbird, Outlook, Firefox, Mail, ...) tries to download or upload a file to / from the folder "Desktop".

If the default folder e.g. for "Save attachment" is not "Desktop" it seems to work fine. Browsing through the folders and choosing "Desktop" -> Finder frezes again.

What I have to figure out now is how to tell all applications that the default folder is not "Desktop"

I have developed this exact problem also since upgrading to 10.9.5

unable to upload/attach anything if the finder window is defaulted top to the Desktop folder .... if not desktop works fine

Happens in Safari, Firefox, Mail everything

Anybody found a fix?

Thank you. This fix worked great. I've been having this problem for a while. But I'm happy to say that deleting the desktop aliases fixed the problem. I have since, put the aliases back on the desktop and the freezing DID NOT return. If it does return, I'll just delete them for good. Thanks again. No need to question your sanity. At least not from this.

Wow, thanks for the fix. 5 years ago I would never believe that every time I want to upload a photo to facebook I have to delete all my desktop icons!
Now nothing is a surprise with Apple!

i only registered to say a BIG BIG thank you for this solution. deleting aliases from the desktop ... I never ever would have thought of this. so - thanks again!
